Great explanation and breakdown, one of the best I have heard. In the law enforcement world here in Virginia, USA, there have been lots of debates about what term to use for law enforcement and corrections. The term defensive tactics, "DT", has been used for as long as I can remember, I started in the 70s and became a DT instructor in the mid-80s. One option the state considered was the term "control tactics." That never got off the runway. The way we look at the term defensive tactics is also umbrella-like and includes situational awareness, body language recognition, preemption, communication, de-escalation, use of tools such as OC, taser, baton, handcuffs, other restraint devices, firearms, empty hand techniques, in deadly and non-deadly situations.

I’m a retired correctional officer. In California we called it self defense and arrest control techniques.

I’ve been watching fights that recently happened at football stadiums here in the United States. Not once did I see anyone using a proper boxing or mma technique. As a matter of fact, people were falling as they were running to the fight because the ground was slippery or they had been drinking. People got knocked down and stomped by multiple attackers so BJJ wasn’t applicable for the situation. Then there were fights in the stands and on the stairs. It’s hard to use proper techniques when you’re in a confined area and surrounded by people. I have trained in traditional martial arts, grappling and boxing. However, I learned more from your channel in a month than I did in my whole life of training techniques and weapons that I will never use. Thank you coach.

Without doubt UKs 🇬🇧 top Combatives representatives ( and one of the best in the world). Nobody puts out the quality stuff Lee M does on a regular basis . The UC style of combatives is brilliant 💯🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🙌🏻👌🏼

Technique, training, practice, etc are obviously essential in developing practical self protection skills, but fully appreciate mindset and ferocity are just as important. Geoff Thompson speaks about using action triggers to switch into predator mindset, this is something I’ve always struggled to apply. I understand the psychology and reasoning for using action triggers, but is this something I could train for training solo, or can it only really be practiced in classes/with a trading partner?

IMO, mindset is the most important out of all the essentials you mentioned. You can definitely train/develop your "mindset switch" with action triggers without a training partner. I like to mix my Combatives mindset training into HIIT workouts to simulate an adrenal dump. You can do a whole lot with a focused, imaginative mind and a single pad.

Would you recommend having a base art before learning combatives or while you're training combatives?

Attaining an athletic combat base, I personally feel is a requisite to Combative efficiency. Muay Thai would be an excellent choice! Both dovetail nicely!
