When you turn down a draw offer, only to lose on time | Averin vs Srinath | World Rapid 2022

Спорт

You have a winning position against an opponent higher rated than you. The opponent is trying his best to defend the position and offers you a draw. You decide to be more ambitious and try to play for a win. In doing so, you forget about the clock and lose on time! Has this ever happened with you?! It happened to young Nikolay Averin in the 9th round of World Rapid 2022 against his opponent GM Srinath Narayanan. Check out the video to see how this transpired.

He is super competitive and that’s a good thing. This kid is driven. He is not filming himself do TikTok dances all day. I hope people understand that most kids don’t care about ANYTHING like he cares about chess. And kids are emotional and need emotional regulation. I hope he has someone in his life that models the appropriate behaviour. I’m willing to bet he figures it out and this ends up being a major learning experience for him.

Amazingly Srinath could have claimed a draw by threefold repetition, but instead it seems that he chose to continue, possibly assuming there was some chance for Averin to make a mistake? At 0:19, 0:41, and 1:05 the exact same position occurs, always white to move. At 1:05 Srinath seems to signal this to Averin, like saying "I can claim draw right now but I will not, I will leave the decision to you and you can claim draw now if you want".

If you count ticks during the slow motion, the time he had was likely about 0.4 to 0.5 seconds when he pressed the clock. As clock already transitioned from 2 to 1 second when we he made his move. So even though clock display says 1 he didn't have full 1 second (0.4 to 0.5 seconds) and that's why clock didn't grant increment.

The LCD display is very slow to update -- you can see how it takes multiple frames to darken the segments to make zero.

If Srinath offered the draw to Averin which was declined, why did he not "claim" the draw after the 3 fold repetition?

Bcz it wasn't a 3 fold repetition. He offered a draw when they repeated 2 times, but Averin declined by moving the piece to a different position.
