When you remove the food button
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
When I started with the buttons I did what @hunger4words suggests you DON'T do, which is start with. a food button. I wasn't sure Billi was heavy enough to depress the button, so I made the choice to start with something I knew would be a strong motivator, but that might come back to bite me after a bit. ⠀
🐱⠀
Billi has started gaining some weight with her extra snacks, so I made the decision to remove her food button and move her feeder away from the buttons. I was very interested to see if Billi would still show the same level of interest, as a common comment we get is "she's just doing this for food" (even though nothing except the food button has a food based reward). ⠀
🐱⠀
Billi was still as communicative as ever! Check out a few clips from our day after the change. ⠀
🐱⠀
Billi is a female domestic shorthair, she's 12 years old, her favorite word is mad. Inspiration from Hunger4Words (check her out on IG).

This poor cat just lived an episode of the twilight zone. Imagine you're living with aliens that cant understand you, then finally given a way to communicate and have your every desire met only to not be given a way to tell them you need food.
The fact that she probably tried to say food with “outside bunny” is really interesting. She wanted to hunt for food, or get food, it’s just really cool seeing that!

Wow, this cat has gone to some impressive lengths to train their human servant.
Billi is such a smartycat. I have my own smartycat, and mostly we communicate through a complex series of cat charades (she will settle on her back legs, and try to walk up my leg when I’m not looking at her, and then when I do, she does one of a few things - reach up one paw and wiggle it (which is treats - I swear she’s imitating my shaking of the treat bag), reach up both paws (that’s her “love you, mum,” as it’s the signal to bend down to touch noses or kiss her on the forehead), motion one paw in a direction (come this way), motioning both paws with excited mreet noises (“hey, guess what toy I found under the couch today!”), motioning both paws frantically (“uh, I may have kicked a poop out of the litterbox, but clearly I can’t get it back in there, though I did try, and now things are a bit out of order in there, could you help a girl out?”). She seems to get the gist of English pretty well, as I’ve been speaking to her since the day I brought her home, so she’ll pick up new cat signs as we talk about them. I once told her about saying please before asking for a treat, and mimicked putting my hands together 🙏, and she took about 3 days before she would start doing the paw wiggle, and then flopping down and moving her front paws together (not unlike a happy sea otter 🦦). I think my point here is, Cookiedough thanks you and Billi for showing us a new way we can communicate that doesn’t involve quite so much interpretive dance. 💛💜💚 Sasha and Cookiedough

I also think that they don’t truly understand but maybe memorized the sound, colour, place, minor physical distinctions, etc. It is an interesting experiment though and might lead to selection of genes that lead to better communication. I’m not a scientist and don’t know if genetic selection is even possible this way in cats or how long it would take to see observable results. It’s interesting that the cats with these toys press the button and seem to wait for a response from the human. Whether they intend for the response of the human is a different story. Affectionate cats accept pets and play with toys unprompted so can’t give much credit to the buttons

She's such a loving cat. I've had cats almost my entire adult life, and I know their general body language pretty well, and I've known each individual on their own terms. And yet, it's still so interesting to see Billi able to convey to you what she means in words too. Cats are amazing communicators, with an extensive "vocabulary" of sounds. I can only imagine how fascinating it must be to her to have new ones to use. The fact that she doesn't just use them for as an aid to making requests, but actively uses it to share her affection for you says a lot about her internal sense of her world and how much she loves you.

I'd give the cat's body language much more consideration than what she does with the buttons, because it's much more natural and instinctive to them. And judging by the video, she is clearly wagging her tail in discontentment which contradicts her pushing the "I love you" button which is supposed to be something positive. Something doesn't add up here.
the way love you and mom are right next to eachother so she can say it really quick as a full sentence is too precious

I'm going to take a wild guess that this cat has regular feeding hours, and understands that the straightforward way to communicate the want for food should not mean a break in the regular feeding schedule. Billi might be slightly confused by this change, but it wasn't born with the buttons, so it's just back to using the old ways of being cute plus using the rest of the buttons to see if any of the others could work. Yes, I know it chose a few very specific ones, but those buttons (mostly "love you" and "mom") might have gotten related to times it gets food, not as strongly as the "food" button, but enough to become suitable alternatives to try in this scenario.

im pretty sure the common understanding is that cats developed meowing mostly because of being around humans speaking, as a way of trying to communicate with us. fun fact: because of this, cats have accents
Micky was improving for awhile but since the new buttons she only seems motivated by buttons that reward something to eat. I think if we took them away she would only be motivated to press random buttons until she gets what she wants. 😹😹

@DandelionGum1

Yeah, I agree. There is no reason to believe the cat understands anything more than "I press a button, I get attention". Cats are intelligent but the people thinking this cat is understanding English semantics are just engaging in some mix confirmation bias, apophenia, or wishful thinking. I mean honestly, how would you go about teaching abstract concepts like "love" without the scaffolding of other words and concepts? So the cat pressed outside? Presuming you go and you open the door and it runs outside. A perfectly reasonable explanation for that is that the cat wanted attention and would have followed anywhere and engaged in whatever activity. It's also quite suspicious that there are a lot of cuts in the video, almost as if the end result is being selectively sampled to imply some sort of consistency or theme in the cat's selection. A better way to test whether the cat can make reasoned selections is to try to get them to press buttons based on certain prompts/objects. E.g. Instead of press bunny get bunny, it should be show bunny press bunny. And test it with other items, and see if it is successful more than just at a rate of random selection. I doubt we'll ever see that here though.
It's getting food outside by eating bugs lmao cat 500 IQ
