When You Need To Apply Nitrogen In A Hurry, 2510H

Ойын-сауық

Well I gotta say I try to make these videos in a way that they're pretty much self explanatory. Any way for those of you that haven't seen my videos before, they're about the day in and day out life on a crop and cattle farm in southwest Wisconsin. I try to avoid doing to much editing in my videos and keep them as close to the original raw footage as I can because lets be honest farming isn't edited as I live it.

    Wow!!! That would be a great addition to the farm. Yeah, I know your finances won't right now, but that looks like the thing you guys could use to speed up your fall work considerably. But maybe sometime in the future, you can get one. Thanks Andrew for showing us the machine....

    Usually better off to just rent the bar from the fertilizer dealer. That's pretty much standard practice in our part of the world. It's an additional expense and expensive to keep up and not used very much, so ties up a lot of capital and doesn't bring a lot to the table compared to just renting it, except perhaps for timeliness (not having to wait for a bar to be available or someone else to finish with it). Later! OL J R :)

    Used to be a lot of anhydrous around here before...a few guys still do it around here...the big deal here now is liquid nitrogen applied while planting at the same time.

    Neighbor and good friend of ours had a bad accident last fall/early this spring. He went to bleed a hose and it exploded. He’s about 6’11 and if he wouldn’t have been so y’all it would’ve blew in his face. Dangerous stuff. We’ve decided it’s not worth the risk to do it ourselves anyway

  • @lukestrawwalker

    @lukestrawwalker

    Yeah my Dad had a similar accident when I was a little kid... the local fertilizer suppliers used to rent machines that had an anhydrous tank to apply the nitrogen and a liquid tank behind it mounted cross-wise on a trailer with a knife bar in the back-- apply all the N, P, and K at once-- N as anhydrous, P and K in the liquid form, two tubes welded to the back of the knives-- one for anhydrous, one for the liquid. Anyway, he had a hose blow on him and got gassed pretty good-- not serious but he was sick for a few days. After that we just knifed in regular liquid ammonia with the P and K in a liquid fertilizer premix. I did dry a few years because we had an old John Deere dry fertilizer machine of our own that could knife dry fertilizer into the beds, but dry is a PITA unless you have an auger and gravity wagon to refill the machine-- dumping 15-20 fifty pound bags of fertilizer into the machine every 2 rounds gets real old real fast! Liquid is SO handy-- just hook up a hose, turn a couple valves, start a gas-engine pump, and transfer it over. Easy-peasy... Main reason guys use anhydrous around here is due to the cost-- it's the cheapest form of nitrogen around here, and it adds up, particularly on high-nitrogen requiring crops like corn and grain sorghum. Later! OL J R :)

    Good morning. Someone help me out. You apply it. Then sometime during winter it warms up. We've all seen this. Would the Anhydrous activate prematurely? Just wondering. Thanks.

  • @lukestrawwalker

    @lukestrawwalker

    5 жыл бұрын

    It's not so much it "activates"-- anhydrous is just pure ammonia without any water in it. Because it has no water in it, it is strongly hydroscopic, meaning it's strongly attracted to water-- that's why if you are exposed to it it's so dangerous, because it dissolves in the moisture in your eyes, nose, mouth, and lungs and essentially turns into "aqueous ammonia" like what you have in your household cleaners, which is ammonia dissolved in water. When it's injected into the soil, the liquid expands (boils) rapidly into a gas, and the gas is strongly attracted to the moisture in the soil and dissolves very quickly into the moisture in the soil, forming aqueous ammonia. The problem is, ALL forms of nitrogen, to some degree or other, are food for bacteria in the soil, and can be transformed into forms of nitrogen not usable by plants for food by soil chemical reactions, ie "denitrification", which turns nitrates into nitrites or breaks down the ammonia or nitrates into nitrogen gas which then escapes into the atmosphere. Remember the air is 78% nitrogen, but plants cannot use the pure form of nitrogen-- it must be in the form of nitrates. Nitrites, if memory serves, are immobile or unusable by plants. The colder the temperatures, the less microbial activity you have in the soil, and most chemical reactions are greatly slowed by cold temperatures as well, leading to the ammonia being "stable" in the soil and capable of being stored for longer periods without excessive loss. When things warm up though, microbial activity in the soil increases rapidly, and chemical reactions (weathering) of the ammonia can begin to take place at a more rapid rate, leading to denitrification. Stabilizers, like N-Serve, help to slow these processes that break down the nitrogen fertilizer and allow it to escape. That's why fall-applied anhydrous works well in the northern corn belt, but isn't a viable practice down here in the South. In fact, we split apply our fertilizers since our soil never freezes and the soil temps stay quite warm, relatively speaking (compared to areas much further north) and thus denitrification is a bigger issue, so applying the fertilizers as close to planting time as possible, or in-season using side-dressing applications, is the best practices in our area down here... To most directly answer your question, YES it's best to apply the anhydrous when the soil is cold and will REMAIN COLD (hopefully) until planting time. Warm weather spells can lead to higher losses. Nitrogen stabilizers add cost but play an important role in reducing nitrogen losses in the event of wet or warm weather. Later! OL J R :)

    We do Nitrogen every year in north Missouri (6 row still even). I thought that was just how you do it. Do it, 200 is normal now. (we do terraces and such) We don't own a bar though. Just not big enough. Owning a bar is not a good idea. I don't care who you are. (if you know a guy that's a different story)
