Hay naku, Chuck. Bayaan mo na lang yung batang yan dahil wala talaga siguro syang alam. Yun lang, dapat di rin siya nag bigay ng opinyon nya if he didn’t know anything about PPop. Lagi na lang kasi akala ng tao, ang Koreans ang nag pauso nyan but I remember a time back in the 80s when Koreans used to get bands and singers from the PI to perform in their clubs because no one back then could really sing in Korea. This was when Korea was still poor and Seoul looked like a version of Quiapo. I know because we used to go there when we were stationed in mainland Japan from 86-89. The truth is pop culture started in the US by the black group performers that even the Beatles tried to emulate when they were just starting out. Even Elvis borrowed his style of singing from the black performers he used to idolize growing up in Memphis. So hindi porke pop e KPop palibhasa’y yun lang ang alam nila. Yung SB19 developed their own unique flavor of pop and they’re not just regurgitating pop songs from the US (plagiarism?) with very similar melody with Korean lyrics like most KPop groups as evidenced from your sample videos. Si Pablo is one of a kind composer and his lyrics are very poetic unlike most US songs nowadays. I’m not just saying that because I’m a fan of the boys (my apos) but because I also know a thing or two about music.

Less talk less mistake..Specially when you don't have enough knowledged about certain things....POP is a universal music at panahon pa yan ng old days..For me KPOP, JPOP, APOP, PPOP, etc .is just a Tagline for knowing us what country their representing.But still the same POP music they want to showcase..And we need to be thankful to MAHALIMA, because of them we can truly say..We have also a tagline which is PPOP that represent to a Filipino music..

Papansin din yung iniinterview kung sinabi na lang nya agad na wala syang alam sa P-pop at iba na lang ang pag-usapan baka di na sya interviewhin eh sayang exposure nya go lang sya ng go sa pagsagot di naman sya sigurado sa sinasabi nya. Feeling pa syang magaling kasi sabi nya konting improvements pa sa sb19 gayong nominated na nga sa Billboard. I think wala din syang alam sa achievements ng sb19 o kahit anong kanta ng grupo, obvious naman sa mga sagot nya at kahit nga sa pop group na kasamahan nya sa Warner Phils ay wala syang alam. Ngayon ko lang narinig ang pangalan nya. May kayabangan din.

Agreed. Not all countries at the moment have a pop music representation in the global scene. Its due to the rise of SB19 that is currently helping elevate or bringing awareness to our Pilipino Pop Music to the global stage. So we should be thankful. Also, PPop is OPM the only thing that really differentiates them is Ppop is the new movement of music in the country vs OPM being the established music movement. I love both.

It's a big comeback of Philippine music in the world scene. Remember when Freddie Aguilar's Anak made it globally and translated into so many languages? Listen to the acoustics, talagang walang katulad. When Kpop made it, I told myself no way would I go gaga over them. I listen to world music, but I said I'd wait for the day Pinoy music hits globally. And I've come to this day, seeing the likes of SB19, performing with so much passion, grit and heart. Iba kasi talaga Pinoy. Iba talaga pinagdaanan natin. Grabe. Naiiyak ako kasi I live in Switzerland, at grabe ang babaw ng mga first world problems nila. Hearing the experiences of SB19 members, and how their experiences reflect so beautifully into their music, poetry, their choreography, cinematography and artistry. Nakakaiyak at nakakataba ng puso talaga. It was worth the wait, refusing to get into Kpop, coz I never really dug the music. And it hurt even more when Filipino artists had to get into the Kpop fever just to fit in. Even the Pinoy kids here in Europe are so into KPop. I don't blame them kasi for years, namatay ang OPM at naging gaya gaya sa KPop ang Pinoy. Dig ko talaga OPM, mala Hotdog era ng parents natin, Rivermaya at Wolfgang (NU Rock days) nung 90s, now naman Ppop, and that's because our government is back at supporting our culture and the arts in our country. This is the start and I'm so excited for SB19. Pagpumunta sila dito sa Europe, I'll be there! Thanks again, Chuck, for another insightful video!

I feel the same. During *NSYNC and BSB era I longed to hear/see some pinoy groups would come out and represent OPM/Philippines because we know we can do it. UMD some other pinoy groups were all dancers and not much of singers. We have singers but not not dancers. When we did have ppop I wanted to hear more because it felt “outdated” if you know what I mean. I wanted to hear western beats with a bang of pinoy flavor. And that’s where SB19 happened, I love Go Up. Heard this song and made me look them up and my love for ppop snowballed after that. SB19 is truly breaking the sound barrier!!

I think his idea of OPM just revolves around the slow and heartwarming songs that Filipinos are used to. Music is evolving and requires an open mind to be able to fully grasp and enjoy it.

This is a long explanation for Arthur Miguel. OPM(ORIGINAL PILIPINO MUSIC) - its a term/genre of music based on the NATIONALITY who composed it. In this case, by Pilipino artists. POP is a genre derived from the words 'POPULAR MUSIC'. This type of music are commonly in the mainstream and being listened by the large audiences/fandom. So not all you hear nowadays are POP unless they're popular. Ballad, Punk, Rock, Acoustic, so on and so forth are considered sub-genres. They can also be considered POP (if they're popular) or CLASSIC (90s, 80s, 70s...) Which based on the time they were released. You can distinguish the song as BALLAD + POP because it's Popular. While you can also term a song as CLASSIC + BALLAD because it's not new anymore. But classic/old music can be POP too, I think. Just like RUNNING UP THE HILL- OST OF STRANGER THINGS - because it became popular and had a mass appeal during the recent season of Stranger Things. This song can be called ART POP MUSIC or ART CLASSIC MUSIC. Michael Jackson's songs can also be considered as POP even if it's already classic because it's still popular right now. KING OF POP MUSIC, Y'ALL! P-POP, K-POP, J-POP, A-POP are genre of POPULAR music based on composer/artist' nationality who released/composed it. They can be punk, ballad, rock, electronic or even retro. They can be in any form of languages. P-POP is also an ORIGINAL PILIPINO MUSIC but they're more popular nowadays and composed in the Philippines, hence they are OPM POP music. But they're not definitely inspired from K-POP. They're inspired by its own genre. So PPOP is not KPOP. You guys are just confused because they're attacking you with their visuals which became a required asset in KPOP unlike in J-POP which I love more than KPOP. ANIME MUSIC ROCKS! You can also consider a song with a Japanese/English/Korean language as OPM as long as it is composed by a PILIPINO. You can't just pick out a certain song from its genre just because they lack deep emotions in it. Do a little research. I'm not even a musician, singer or a dancer.

@@DarkR0ze should be legally licensed under a music licensing company/record label based in the Philippines. I think you can be a Filipino artist who write songs in Tagalog/English but not legally licensed in our country. You can't fully tell if it's OPM. That's what I meant by "in the Philippines"... Sorry. Correct me if I'm wrong though. ☺️

I hope Arthur will research more about PPop. Parang nakafocus siya sa mga ginagawa at gusto lang nya. Must widen his horizon and appreciate PPOP songs.

I learned a lot about PPOP because of SB19.. dati talaga hinde ko pinapakinggan ang music nila at hinde nga ako sigurado kung Koreans ba sila or Pinoys.. at hirap ako i identify sila isa isa kasi nga wala akong interes makinig before.. I had never appreciated them before.. Pero nagbago pananaw about SB19 right after napanood ko ung music video ng WYAT doon ako nag umpisa ma curious about them kasi ang ganda ng WYAT parang un ung una kong nagustuhan at un din ung naging umpisa na isearch ko sila.. at pakinggan, panoorin mga songs nila, MVs, interviews, tv guestings, performances.. In short hinalughug ko mga lumang videos nila.. kung paano sila nag umpisa as individuals at kung paano sila nabuo as a group. I maybe too late to be a fan pero sila ung grupo na hinde ko kasasawaan ang talents nila.. Talagang magaling hinde mn nakikita ng iba pero siguro mas marami na ang nakaka appreciate sa kanila ngayon.. and thank you for their international fans..kung sila nga kayang maging A'tin tayo pa kayang kapwa nila Filipino..

As someone who loves SALABAT19, I love it when you said that, "Sound? I think you should listen to ALAMAT." Because I think he never heard that. PPop rise! 🇵🇭🎶

This isn't the first time a Filipino artist was asked about his/her thoughts about PPOP (remember Maria Laroco?) and the artist responded as if he/she has a lot of knowledge about the OPM subgenre but he/she hasn't even listened to a single PPOP song. Why can't we admit that we know nothing about something instead of pretending to be familiar with a certain topic and end up looking ridiculously ignorant? People will understand if you say, "Pasensya na po, I can't share any insights about PPOP kase hindi po talaga ako familiar sa genre." Oh well, I hope this interview piqued the guy's interest enough to check out PPOP and to research a bit. Another interesting content, Chuck! Looking forward to the next one!

I actually don't hate him for what he said. The guy clearly doesn't understand music genres. Sadly, when people hear boy band, they feel like it is automatically kpop. i just hope that he, as a musician, will open his mind and listen to different genres. Even if it is not your cup of tea. Because it will make him grow as an artist. If you are just confined into one genre, one musical style, you will not be able to pick up other skills that can help him improve in the future.

Wow! Who is he? Sa isang interview kay Maestro Ryan Cayabyab, he acknowledged the music of P-pop groups, with special mention of SB19, as OPM. Ako nga (senior ctzn), kundiman pa inabot ko, pero na aappreciate ko ang latest genre ng music. Ay ang batang are ah. May sariling pakahulugan sa OPM. Sana'y mamulat. Gaya nga ng sabi ng SB19, hindi lahat ay mulat sa uri ng musika ng P-pop. 🤷✌️

For me PPOP is an upgraded version of OPM. Music categorize under PPop are made to cater not only to the younger generations but also be loved by our fellow Filipinos who loves music. As the interviewer said, "world domination",it's time that our music/artists be recognized internationally not just in the Philippines.

Now I realize why Kuya Chuck reacted instantly on RIVerse comment about "Authenticity", this video help me understand more about PPOP and OPM. This also enlightened me the difference of what we have compare to other pop groups outside. Nakamove on naku pagka disappoint kay Arthur. And I'm not convince he don't know about PPOP, close-minded lng tlga cia. i had to pause this video a number of times to literally take a deep breath because nearly every statement triggered me as someone who's been in the k-pop, p-pop, and I dare say the "traditional" opm scene for more than a decade now. but thank you for this opinion~ it sheds a light to what p-pop really is especially to those who see nothing but a but a mere shadow of k-pop. i hope that the person in this video (sorry, I genuinely have not heard of him in p-pop or even opm scene) gets to see this and start to educate himself and others on their perceptions of music in general.

Great example of not doing your research assignment before being interviewed. The adage “By failing to prepare, you prepare to fail!” I was cringing the whole clip of his interview….I’ll probably give him a chance due to his lack of knowledge in OPM history. You did a lot of research Chuck. You're an amazing dude. Keep supporting PPOP and continue to spread awareness to those still blind about PPOP.

Strictly speaking, the definition of pop music is just music that caters to a wide audience, with its characteristic sound. So a lot of OPM is pop, which makes it Philippine pop. But P-pop is somehow specific to bands of boys and/or girls performing Philippine pop music, isn’t it? So how isn’t it OPM? The thing is because of the label P-pop, it always gets compared to Asian pop groups. When it is actually just a label meaning groups of young artists performing pop music, whether they’re Korean, Philippine, Japanese, or whichever nationality they belong to.

it's not limited to groups btw. may mga solo artist din sa P-POP, K-POP, J-POP, A-POP whatever pop. It's just literally the pop music na nilagyan na initals ng country ngayon to distinguished the origin since mas lumalawak na ang audience.

P-pop is best to associate Pinoy songs in the international scene and that's includes OPM. P-pop or OPM Ang importante is to showcase the amazing talents of Filipino and be proud of it.

Right Chuck, it’s lack of knowledge. Whoever was in charge of him they should have giving him more information and maybe more updated with what’s going on with the music industry in the Philippines..

Party genre, hmmm... pop stands for "popular" or "mainstream" and can be defined in the following ways: 1. Music that became trendy in the West (US and the UK) since the 1950s (or from the 1950s onwards). 2. Music that makes and sells the most hits. It's a variety of music produced for commercial consumption and for audiences that do not belong to any specific music culture or background. 3. Music produced with electronic instruments or ANY instruments that characterize a contemporary or modern period. 4. Light music that is further distinguished from soul, rock, classical or folk music. There's NO definition of pop that says it's "party music." Pop music includes a whole range of music from the iconic Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, Westlife, Backstreet Boys, and Britney Spears (among others) most of whom popularized Western pop music as we know it. And if you include GEOGRAPHICAL considerations based on the definition above, KOREA IS NOT EVEN the ORIGINATOR of POP MUSIC since the term was generally adopted from the US and the UK. So generally, K-pop is just a way of labelling the kind of pop music that's created by Korean artists in relation to pop music that originated in the US and the UK. On the other hand- OPM stands for Original Pinoy Music. It can include POP and NON-POP songs. Any music created in the same way as Philippine folk music would be non-pop OPM (which Arthur Miguel must have confused with all pop music since he insists on Pinoy pop being "traditional OPM," while forgetting that pop is NOT "traditional" in the strictest sense of the word but may in fact be the opposite of it, as "popular" means non-traditional or contemporary). On the other hand, cover songs or exact/ almost exact reproductions of foreign artists' music are definitely not OPM for obvious reasons. This means that any music- regardless of the inspiration, the genre, or the influence will be OPM if: 1. They've been made or produced for the first time and there is no pre-existing form or copy of it; 2. They're in Filipino or in any OTHER language of communication (Cebuano, Ilocano) that is used by Filipinos in the Philippines. Since English is ONE of those languages that's widely used not only in education but also in other fields like business and politics- aside from the fact that Filipinos generally acquire/learn it as a second language- songs written by Filipino artists in English are also OPM. 3. OPM can also mean it's made BY Filipinos FOR Filipinos. Pinoy after all is not a term that refers to any specific language in the Philippines- but rather, it connotes Philipine culture in all its forms. MAPA, Tilaluha, Hanggang sa Huli, Nyebe, Bazinga, WYAT are all OPM based on the above definitions. Maybe some artists will debate some points here and there- but TECHNICALLY speaking, SB19 songs are all OPM BY DEFINITION. You see- MUSIC IS SOMETHING HEARD, NOT SEEN. It's only when MUSIC VIDEOS became a "thing" that the visual aspect became a relevant consideration. Still, no award-giving body or recognized institution in the music industry will say that the VISUAL aspect is a DEFINING FEATURE. You can have MUSIC WITHOUT THE DANCE MOVES because the words, the beat, the melodies are the defining features. Radio play and streaming preserves the auditory aspect precisely because the MUSIC is the SONG or the COMPOSITION. It's meant to be heard, not seen. But if you can listen to it as well as watch it, then you have ART. In other words, artists are artists when they "perform." Without the artist, music can be appreciated as music because all you need is to hear it. Of course, on stage it's the artist that gives music its life. That's why OPM should be further distinguished from WHAT the ARTIST does with his music when he performs it. As an analogy- What makes a house is the actual structure- the walls, the roof, the ceiling, the foundations. The paint makes it all the more beautiful- but you can have a house without the paint- not the other way around. Those who think P-pop is K-pop is mesmerized by the similarities in the VISUAL presentation- which is not even an essential feature of the actual music that's being created. Incorporating dance may be MORE artistic to some- but music is music even without it. While singing, you can juggle fruit, walk on a trapeze, or jump through a burning hoop (the way they do in a circus act) and still produce music that's undeniably OPM. You can dance like Michael Jackson, BTS, or the Backstreet Boys and still produce OPM based on the ESSENTIAL features of the music you've written or created- not on the visual presentation of it on stage. So to me it's a mystery that K-POP and P-POP seem CONFUSING to some. These two are NOT EVEN SIBLINGS because their cultural origins are different. Comparing the two is like saying two buildings painted in the same color are "similar" or all red fruit are the same. But that's ridiculous, of course, since apples, cherries, and strawberries don't fall from the same tree (strawberries don't even come from trees). So I hope we recognize ESSENTIAL DIFFERENCES instead of blindly judging things based on superficial similarities. And like I always say, judge less, love more. If LOVE is TOO HARD, then maybe we can settle for RESPECT? After all, you can't even try to love something you hardly respect. Also, there's such a thing as creative freedom. I'm sure anyone who has ever written his own songs knows how precious freedom is- after all, creativity and freedom go together. Arguably, artists have no duty or obligation to educate their audiences on these points, but an artist who naively gives opinions on a controversial topic might carelessly MISeducate innocent "outsiders" who don't know any better. And miseducation sometimes works like prejudice- it only takes a moment to make it happen but an entire lifetime to UNlearn it.

Presently, Original Pilipino Music ( OPM) encompasses all the music created /performed by Filipino musicians … it is subdivided into different categories such as P-pop, HipHop, rock, ballads, R&B, etc… Pop music weee popularized in the Phil in the 1990s by such groups as Side A, Introvoys, Neocolors, etc… and evolved with time… Hindi lang naka research mabuti si sir…

I guess SB19 still has an uphill battle when it comes to getting out of the shadow of Kpop. I've heard too many Kpop songs now that are eerily similar to western songs and it's confirming my conviction that SB19 is on another level. I won't say it's plagiarism. I'm neither the owner of the song nor the purported plagiarist. I'm not in-the-know of what happened behind the scene. Maybe, the artist's management decided to buy the song coz really, some of these Kpop songs are bordering on blatant copying. For SB19, I've yet to hear a song of theirs that is a close copy of another song. This is a testament of how genius Pablo is as a music producer. It takes one heck of a talent to create a song that is not a carbon copy. Yes, I can feel similar vibes on some songs but that's it. SB19 are making their songs, not the management who can gather a pool of producers or just simply buy the song from another artist. Unlike most of the Kpop artists, SB19 are in control of their music and so they would be well aware if their song is a copycat. So Arthur Miguel, I hope that you were able to watch this video and read comments to help you expand your knowledge about music.

I agree OPM is PPop.. For me, the term "Ppop" is just a new term for OPM today, since a lot of younger generation have been influenced by the word 'KPOP' & 'JPop' and have become famous around the world. I hope the older artist can be more active and make more NEW songs (not just covers/revivals) so people can listen to variety of OPM songs.

To be fair KPOP received a lot of smack from critics in it's early beginnings. And some Asian Americans helped put KPOP on the map. So credit to them. My point being PPOP will soar regardless of critics. Thanks Casual Chuck. Great content. 🤩👍

Alamat specifically uses their platform to promote Filipino culture. They wear traditional Filipino textiles, use traditional instruments, use a mixture of different languages from the Philippines in their songs, and even their music videos highlights some history/culture of the Philippines. A fan of Arthur ever since he started covering Taylor Swift songs... I even stayed after the backlash he received for not crediting Taylor as the composer of his official song covers. Sadly, I can't side with him on this one, I have a huge amount of respect for esbi, and them being branded like this again by one of my fav cover artists is something na nakaka skKsksksksk. He will be seeing Esbi at a concert event next year, I hope may character development.

Actually sa SB19 ko lang din naintindihan yung Kpop and Ppop or ung mismong genre. I remember way back sa interview nila na inexplain niya yon, don ko na lang din na realize yan. I've been a fan of kpop my whole childhood. And because of Pablo, music made more sense.

What exactly is "Filipino" to him? Our cultures are a mash of different ones. Does he want us to always wear bahags or barong-tagalogs in every music video? Does he want us to make hopeless romantic harana songs that are only composed of guitars and harmonies? It's like he's saying P-POP is not 'Filipino' enough. What makes an artist 'Filipino' enough then? If they're like IV of spades? whose music are obviously indie-inspired, and you can definitely tell which foreign bands they took inspiration from. What is Filipino enough? Eraserheads who were once called The Beatles of the Philippines? All the modern filo rappers whose music follow the flow of what rap should be, mostly taking inspiration from foreign rappers? Man, kahit sino nacocompare sa mga foreign artists, so, what's the line between being Filipino and not being Filipino enough? OPM means original PINOY music, and P-POP is OPM. That means whatever we Filipinos produce, it's still OPM. OPM is NOT a genre, it is simply FILIPINO music, whether it's in English, Tagalog, or whatever dialect or language that exists in our country inside and outside, anything PINOY is OPM. I get what he means by 'traditional' OPM music, but even those types of music from artists like Hale, Rivermaya, The Speaks, Parokya ni Edgar, Freestyle, South Border, kahit sila they had artists they took inspiration from. Kahit sila ung mga music nila may katunog from foreign artists, so what's the difference with P-POP and K-POP? at hindi lang P-POP binabangga mo diyan, you have J-POP, T-POP, V-POP.. and so on. Make it make sense.
