When you abuse your Viper's V10 one too many times 😬

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

After years of abuse, my Viper’s V10 developed an ominous ticking noise. So we tear down its massive 8-liter engine in search of the problem and I reveal the big upgrades I’m installing next.

*Dear good gentlemen of KZread* you can get in contact with me, support me directly, and find all my socials/store/etc thru my Tazet profile: www.tazet.com/foureyes Let’s get into some Mustang stuff (assuming you watched the whole video)... The Mustang’s current engine was built for boost, but so far I’ve just been trying to squeeze as much NA power out of it as possible, which is kind of silly considering it has a compression ratio of -- We’re going to install the Vortech supercharger mentioned in the video (the head unit’s good for 950 hp) -- While we install that, tune it, race it etc, we’ll build a high compression (12.5) NA motor on the side. When that engine is ready, we’ll do an engine swap and find out what a 3-valve can do when it has similar displacement and compression to a gen-3 coyote engine. -- Then we’ll refresh the low-compression engine and install as much of the turbo kit on the engine as possible while it’s out of the car, then we’ll drop in the turbo engine and full send. -- Somewhere betwixt all this I may try to install a sequential, if it’s not crazy expensive. All that being said, the next video will be about putting the Viper back together, hearing its new cam, tuning it, and racing a BMW V10 and an Audi V10. Should be a good one.

Make triple sure you install those lifters facing the right way or you’ll be tearing it back apart. You may know that but never hurts to make sure. Prefix has good stuff. I buy Gen 3 Hemi stuff from them. Should sound pretty sick with the new cam!! That spalling on the cam lobe is a major issue with multiple brands so it’s not isolated to Mopar. I think oil is a major player and OE keeps recommending too light of a viscosity because they want gas mileage and to keep EPA happy. Prefix should get you straight on what viscosity to run. Joe Gibbs driven, Lucas oil, or Penn Grade is about the best 3 out there from personal experience having built several hundred engines and using them. Keep us posted! Love the car ❤

Stock they are not, especially corners are a mess, as with most american cars with V8 or more. I dont know a V8 except from a old 69 Mustang GT, but i was driving a lot with V6 Diesel, regular 1,9 and 2l R4 diesels, as well a NA 1,4l and 2l as well turbo 1,6l and 2,4l petrol. The cars which were the most fun and "fastest" (in general, including corners and driving "agile") were the ones with small/light engines as well a light build in general with a good weight distribution as well low point of gravity. Neither light engines, nor a good weight distribution the average american muscle car give you, including the otherwise pretty iconic and nice Viper. My favorite cars i drive are either my old, turbocharged Renault Clio RS with all wheel drive, drives like a charme also normally, is somewhat "fuel efficient" and goes like hell if i want to. Has just 970kg dry weight and is one of the lightest possible cars with AWD. Sadly its a collectors item somewhat and its a "sunny day" and weekend car. Or, which is a nice cruiser with good handling, my Subaru Impreza from 2010. Has "just" the 2l Boxer Diesel as well its pretty "bad" (not the AWD i hoped for) visco clutch for the AWD. But with a 220 HP chiptuning, removed DPF, disabled EGR and a bigger turbo it also goes nice, just the 1500kg hinders it from being a sports car.

The Viper is such a wildly distinct piece of engineering. For me it's the only American muscle car that truly, wholly supersedes the inbuilt tropes and expectations associated with it's class and manufacturer. In fact it transcends classification as a whole. It did not have a "style", nor a competitor, nor a target audience, per se. It reminds me a lot of the Lexus LFA in that regard, and a few others (that glorious V10!). It is, by design, the purest, most outlandish work of art that its creators could muster. We need more cars like this.

As a retired aerospace engineer that did mostly mechanical engineering, the frosting on the lifter's roller and the damage to that cam load suggests three possible (either individual or a combination of): (1) lubrication; (2) metallurgical; and (3) dimensional. Looking at the spalling on the cam lobe and more specifically - where in the roller path (at the ends) suggests the load (side-to-side) profile and that roller's "crown drop" was not optimal. If the surface treatment (nitriding, carburization, ??) on that cam lobe was less thane designed, the surface would fatigue earlier. And a lubricant (tribology) generated fault could also be the cause or a contributing factor. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tribology

Finally man, as much as I love the stang vids, I was hoping to see the vioer get some well needed attention and love. I love v8’s a lot but something about a v10 that has the American v8 feels and sounds is just amazing.

Great job on the proper disassembly to find the issue. I know what a horrible, time consuming and expensive job that is so kudos to you for doing it right, finding the problem and making it better. Most people would have ignored it until it killed the car.

V10 Viper...heck yes! I had a chance to drive a GTS in around 2001 on an Autocross track- I was impressed. Amazing amount of torque! Only thing I could find with torque anywhere near is a Buick GS455 with power adders.....You are making me think Viper though...goddang beast!

@ 1:21 OMEFFIN'G, THAT CAR IS SO EFFIN' BEAUTIFUL!!! That GTS body are just so freaking gorgeous!!! Really, 2nd gen Vipers are absolutely magnificent works of art, and unbelievable marvels of automotive engineering. I can genuinely feel it in my stomach when I see them in person, and very, VERY few cars have that effect on me...

You can pinpoint vibration/sound location putting a wooden broomstick/dowel on the engine and then place your ear on the rounded end for comfort. My friend showed me that to pin point rod/rocker valve chatter with the valve cover on. Works really well.

Oh snap! That was some VERY loud ticking. I would have been terrified driving it to the track and back. That cam lobe damage looks really weird, especially considering the roller is fine. Maybe it was just some fatigued metal, or it had some problems during the casting or hardening stage of fabrication. Huh... Well, i hope the tick/slap/rattle is gone after the new cam and heads. Pumped for the next video!!!

That Milwaukee ratchet is such a great tool, it made me buy a 12V Milwaukee tool even though all my other power tools are 18V Makita. I'm sort of committing battery adultery, but damn that compact 12V battery is convenient. Fits into tight spaces. That thing has saved me lots of aggravation, a very useful tool, one of the best things I've ever bought.
