When WRC Overtaking Goes Wrong

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Unlike some other motorsports, overtaking doesn't happen that often in rallying, but when it does it can be pretty spectacular!

@@hannuainsalo6825 How did it kill the sport? At least it was nice to see more drivers and manufacturers have a shot. And how would it be nice to have just one or two. One of the whole points of WRC is not just to see drivers competing but to see which manufacturer can make the best car. Would you like to watch boxing where just there was just the 2 same guys battling in every match for the whole season. There would be no variety. Also one problem is the the last gen WRC cars and the current Rally1 cars are just space frames made from scratch that basically have nothing to do with normal road cars.

At 2:00 that little "tap" could have easily sent Mikkelsen into the spectators. This is such an insane sport it makes even something like F1 look lukewarm in comparison. How they manage to keep racing on those back roads with a wheel falling off... it's a whole other level of competition

F1 has always been mid ever since the 2000s its just similarly specced cars running around following the exact same line lap after lap because any deviation from the ideal line would mean time lost. I mean don't get me wrong the drivers are absolutly extremely skilled to drive at insane speeds with insame precision but there is just not much room for character when everything is so tightly regulated and optimized, which makes the races very visually boring. Formula E has been breaking the mold though but its still not nearly as fun to watch compared to rallying where every driver have a different way to tackle the same corner ,the road conditions makes for crazy mud sprays and dust clouds that are just visually stunning.

you been watching too many movies and/or played too many games, this isn't NFS where small tap = car flies out of control. they do the tap thing, because there's really no other way of getting front driver's attention. nobody in rally checks mirrors, if you do that .. then you'll end up in a tree quite fast or finish on last place due going extremely slowly or constantly going off the road due checking mirrors. honking your has no effect either, because you simply wouldn't hear it. that's why they have headsets, rally cars have way too much noise. you'd only notice at night when you see headlights, otherwise its near impossible noticing that there's another car behind you, even if you'd check mirrors, due the dust, it would be near impossible seeing the car anyways. that's why they do the tap and it's not dangerous at all, in real life cars dont fly into the sky when you gently tap at the back

Nothing is as exciting to watch as rally. How could it be? Driving flat out on narrow dirt roads, unpracticed beforehand, trees and rocks and spectators all along the track, loose and variable driving surfaces under you, weather changes when it changes, dust, animals, either you get lucky or you don't, you have to take it as it comes. And you are driving while putting complete faith in your codriver to call the turns correctly, or you end up in the trees at 100mph. And _he_ has to spend the entire race with his eyes on the pace notes, not losing track for a moment, putting complete faith in you to not kill him while you fly past the trees and rocks and slide sideways around blind corners. I stumbled onto rally years ago and the whole concept still amazes me. And I don't see how anyone can be as talented as a top tier rally driver. Not to diminish the other racers, but they don't have to drive the way a rally driver does. They get good tarmac, safety barriers and runoffs, they get to practice and learn the track before they race on it.

'Pride' suffers from semantic overload much like 'love' does. It's fine to be pleased for the accomplishments of one's own culture.

@@o00nemesis00o Well... it's simple: pride = I am > others. Everyone wants their pride to be the "good" kind, but there's no such thing. Humility is good. Pride bad. Of course nobody wants to hear that. Pride is a very popular sin, one that all can enjoy seemingly without blame or guilt. Or jail time.

*Edit:* I made this comment before watching the video. Apparently it IS standard practice to let faster cars pass. Even better for this idea then. I have an idea for rally cars. Perhaps they could all be fitted with proximity and speed electronic systems, that sound an allarm when another car is approaching at speed X amount faster, where X is fast enough to imply an inevitable overtake event. The common courtesy in the rules would be once the alarm is triggered you are responsible to try allowing the gaining drive to pass. If you have the speed to pass, but the space is only restricted by the car in front blocking, the danger continues. I do realise that by existing standards this may be considered normal driving strategy, but it might just as easily be considered bad sportsmanship to not let the faster car pass. With electric systems to make the call on when you're being overtaken and cameras to see whether you made space for the pass, race officials should be able to adjudicate fairly and call foul whenever necessary.
