When Worship Music Goes Wrong! Maverick City Music

Maverick City Music Group are a very popular Contemporary Christian music group. They are known for their many hit songs and with their recent collaboration with Elevation Church, Maverick City Music has reached new highs. But this success has come with a price. Maverick City Music has compromised their lyrics to appeal to a larger audience and it's putting them on the verge of collapse. In this video, I react to a recent performance by Maverick City Music at the BET Awards and it's not good.

I agree with most of what you have said except the Billy Porter explanation. When I was a sinner, gospel music did have a soul-searching effect on me, but it also gave me an occasion to worship and praise a God, that I was not fully surrendered to as yet - AND this is what pulled me closer. Singing and clapping to Gospel music doesn't necessarily mean he was comfortable in sin while praising God. Let's not be too presumptuous in our assumptions. Again, I agree with a lot points in this video 🙂

I use to hate gospel music before I got saved. When I first got saved, I must say that Maverick City's music had me on my knees crying worshipping God. But after a while I began to realize that their music and whom they were singing to started to change as they got more recognition, I noticed the compromise and stopped listening to them. Fame and fortune has definitely turned them to the world. I pray they turn back to the truth and leave such worldly things behind. They are trying to be friends with the world, Jesus sat with sinners but he never partook in the sin. Christian singers who sing with brazen secular artist only send the message that you can continue to do you and still be blessed by God, no need for repentance or turning from sin. This is how Satan merged paganism and Christianity, keep your idols and add a little bit of Jesus. God is more than enough, these things will all pass away.

A church is defined by the worship leader. what type of songs and how it is done. This is an immense responsability. As a christian, I have experienced times when I could not sing aven ONE song during the entire service ! before I was a dancer and choreographer, but now I long for Hymns without "noise" (loud and secular style of music). It is the Spirit of God that's make all the difference. Having consecrated worship leaders is a must. I wish you to always be under God's influence for your own sake and the sake of the church where you minister. God bless you.

That’s it!” I am grateful for God’s Spirit of discernment and I truly pray they are convicted of sin, and of their error, and convinced of righteousness, in Jesus name, Amen! The more they progress it's just catchy music with a message, but it doesn't hold that same weight as their old music held. I'm never to say where anyone is in there journey with Christ, but back then you could feel the surrender. I pray that God keeps them and they follow Him on the right path. 🙏🏾

It makes me so happy to see so many of us using discernment. I did not pay attention to the Steven Furtick collaboration however I started paying closer attention to them and the moves that they were making after the announcement of the Kirk Franklin collaboration. It was downhill from there but this is a group of highly annoying to individuals and I pray they come out of this darkness that they are in. It’s sad how this has happened to so many powerful anointed Christian leaders. The lust of the eyes is a real thing. Lusting after the things of this world and being tempted to compromise. This music industry is something you can’t play with. You have to pick a side. With my 15-year-old prophesied to be a producer, I was initially frightened. I could see it in him since he was eight though. After the prophecy, for four hours that day at my apartment you could hear heavenly trumpets playing in his room. It was prophesied that he would hear prophetically etc. but also that he needed to be careful because the enemy was trying to wrap him up with certain people. It will be my daily prayer that Yahusha protects him and he can hear the voice of God and stand firm in all of these things I’ve been teaching him. I pray Maverick city can do the same

Now what I will say is my husband and I went to a couple of Christian concerts this year like we are messengers and sidewalk prophets and he surprised me with tickets to maverick city in Brooklyn. I was excited until he said Kirk would be there...I told him I didn't want to go then because I knew what clientele would be there. Needless to say I was 1000% right. Even my boss was like what concert happened to where there's people that looked like they were half in and half out the church? Honestly I did not feel God at that concert like I did with the others. Good afternoon. I agree with you wholeheartedly. I must admit I get caught up sometimes with the cooled sound of gospel music. But then, I find myself searching the lyrics looking for anointing and God’s Word. Lately gospel music has been lacking in those areas. I find my self falling back on the Word of God in Romans 12:2 - “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” ‭‭Romans‬ ‭12:2‬ ‭NLT‬‬ In essence, I wish the believers and followers of Christ’s precepts would for once lead the world and not be a follower of the world. Sigh….keep praying saints.

Wow, I'm just now seeing this video. It's such a thorough breakdown. You know I've been listening to them and I can say that the Lord truly does still use any vessel to get his messages across, even a donkey. The people will not suffer for the mistakes of these individuals. But, oh the Lord takes it serious, to whom much is given much is required. I had a dream a couple of months back with them in it. In the dream I saw Naomi on the stage and the rest of Maverick City and all their family and everyone gathering around them and they were trying to debute something in front of the whole world. I remember they were on a stage and it was in front of so many people to see and they hit this light with the attempt for the thing that they wanted to debut to go off and it never went off. It actually failed. I don't know if this is the Lord saying that there will be an attempt to make another album, or something that they're going to try to launch. But whatever it is it's not going to do well. It was very clear that the glory and the splendor of what they were trying to showcase failed and it never lit up when they hit the button. And this was in front of everyone to see. God bless

Jesus would be at the BET Awards sitting right next to Billy Porter, because Jesus wasn't afraid of the world or of sinners. He sought them out, meanwhile the religious folks of his time were angered and disgusted because this man who calls himself the Christ eats with prostitutes and text collectors and not dignified members of the faith like themselves. They thought they didn't need a savior. But they did and so do you Garry. You aren't better than they are. You're not holier. You've falling short, I've falling short we all need Jesus. And it's people like YOU that need him the most because you think you're better and holier than they are when you're not.

He'd be sitting right next to Billy Porter just as he sat and dined with criminals, prostitutes and tax collectors. The lowest of the low in Jewish society back in his time. The Will of God was to SEEK AND SAVE THE LOST by ministry. Seriously, do you think Jesus just went to those people's homes just to eat? Hence why he went to those people. You may think you're so holy and above "sinners" but you're not. You're not special. You're sinner just like them and just like me. We all fall short of the glory of God. We all deserved to die on a cross because of our sin. But that's why Jesus came, because we're all in need of a savior. Hence why Jesus always approached these so called "sinners" with open arms and acceptance and why he constantly chastised the Holy Members of the Jewish faith. They thought they were better than the prostitutes and the tax collectors etc etc. But they weren't in fact they were in worse shape cause at least the "bad people" recognized they needed help. The Holy people were too good for Jesus. Which is why they killed him.

The truth is that we Christians are always very much eager to criticize and condemn ourselves. Even if they are drifting away which I'm not sure, there's a better way to handle it via prayers and that's the only needful thing to do right here. I'm pretty sure it wasn't God that told you to say this. Righteousness is actually right standing with God, and God hasn't made anyone here his deputy to confirm he's no longer in right standing with the Mavericks, we'll just end up tearing the body apart cuz i already see plenty comments of people saying they will stop playing their songs. How does this profits us? Please let's learn to act with love and let's not forget we have a father in heaven who doesn't treat us looking at our sins, His love for us is way beyond our flaws and He always expect we run back to Him and do what's is needful of us that's why He'll never stop loving us. #unstopablelove

Hi Brother, I really respect your calm tone as you discuss this issue but I have a genuine question: You say that the fact that "Billy Porter...a man who wears dresses" was singing and clapping is some sort of proof that Maverick City were doing something wrong or at least headed down a wrong path. Then you went on to say that a person like him "should be trembling under conviction." I'm wondering why you believe this to be true? What in the life and teachings of Jesus has led you to believe that your statement is true? Also, what would "trembling under conviction" look like? How would we know, just from looking with our natural eye, if Billy Porter or any other person felt convicted? Side note: I'm not a fan of Maverick City and I don't really have an opinion on whether they should perform at award shows. I'm just bothered by the notion that we can look and judge a person's (in this case Billy Porter's) response to the gospel based on what we see with our natural eye. I think that could be a dangerous and unbiblical belief to hold.

If we are spreading sharing God’s word we have to honor it at all times. We need to pray for wisdom guidance strength that our Father will heal us forgive us for whatever we do wrong and seek Counseling from the Elders. I could go sit in church and because the hold the enemy had on me was so strong it blinded me. It's so sad to see people of God publicly talking about other people of God. It is our responsibility as Children of God's kingdom to pray for each other, not point out what we feel are flaws. Pray and let God be God. All this is doing is validating what non-believers already think. By you calling them out how are you separated from everyone else. We are suppose to become ONE church but yet we choose to allow the enemy to keep us divided. Maverick city was performing the song ‘come and move, we say yes to you.’ They kept repeating this line. It was like they were calling on a deity or demon, that was not Jesus. It was bizarre. And the people around the stage- there was lesbians kissing and looked like they were about to have sex, people were drunk and high. WIth all do respect, I think that it is ignorant to address that because Billy Porter was standing up singing and not in shame that Maverick City is out of bounds. Also, we hold too much esteem for people/ humans/ and young adults at that….Lets remember that as believers we are only righteous because he said we are. We have no Idea of the seeds that were sown from the song and I guess we still don't understand the power in receiving God's Love. The last thing that we should want people to do (Billy Porter) is hide and be of shame and no I am not knocking conviction but challenging the false idea of being delivered from that that which we hide and or suppress. what true deliverance comes from hiding? All this does is push people towards an accepted community. think about how gangs are formed. In that same video I saw two young men making a mockery out of deliverance as well , which the camera man totally shinned a light on and in my opinion was intentional. A gay Man and Mockers got cameos during the performance. I think it is a bigger picture, and here we come in our ignorance playing into it. I am starting to understand why certain people cant fish everywhere. Maverick City did a great job despite the mistakes they have possibly made in their camp. Keep singing y’all and seeking God. Ps. and I am a believer.... No middle, who truly desires that everyone encounters our Lord and Savior!

What you have to say in this video is spot on. The majority of Christian performers are just that, performing. They're performing for the adoration and the money but not for the Lord and King Jesus Christ. Instead of being pure and unadulterated they are compromisers.

When I was a praise singer, it was our duty to bring in the presence of God. It was us who had to create an atmosphere that when someone who didn't know God came in off the street, that they would feel his presence. There were Sundays that you could tell we were distracted or if nothing was breaking through. I use to get that from the old maverick city music. Their music created an atmosphere that I could easily get into the presence of God. However their new music doesn't do that for me anymore and it breaks my heart. As a worship leader, they should be able to sense the difference, they should feel that wall or a block as if they are no longer truly in it for him and just going through the motions.

I saw a post on Facebook from a former Bible school classmate who had made negative comments about Maverick City and from what I had seen from the group looked to be on point so I couldn’t understand why she had trashed them. However, you took the time to point out the issues so I can now see it for myself. Thank you for the education!

Sadly, Kirk Franklin will corrupt anyone he partners with. And now they’re on tour with him again currently. And sadly, even if their partnership with Kirk Franklin comes to an end, I don’t think they’ll go back to the way they used to be. They got a lot of attention and a lot of notoriety with him involved, and usually those that are corrupted by Kirk Franklin tend to stay corrupted. I follow a couple artists that work with Kirk Franklin, however, they didn’t let them take over. Meditating music, full joy with anyone that will give them a platform even if those people aren’t good.

Although it may not look like what you expect it to look like who are you to judge? Jesus literally went against the religion said and against what the religious leaders of his time said to save people.

Christian/Gospel music should reflect the teachings of scripture and exalt the greatness of God. The music prepares/tills the “soil” for the planting of the seed. Soft/watered down Gospel music will not have much effect on the soil. A seed cannot be properly planted or take root in soil that hasn’t been tilled effectively.

@@ByTheBookMinistries True my beloved brother, this comes from experience , Everyone can be used for the kingdom in different ways . Thats why one man plants .. The one planting is allowed to plant because the seed is not yet a tree . The music that's not directly talking about the Kingdom is still sowing something and posturing the heart slowly.. Think about it.. It's NOT a Christian or Gospel show and they were invited to sing.. Why ? God can use the foolish things to confound them .

They were paid handsomely to perform that night. It wasn’t a sacrifice to be there, it was beneficial for their careers. Furthermore, they performed with P Diddy and sang HIS song about Notorious BIG. That’s a slap in God’s face and a sign of weak faith.
