    I've watched like a thousand hours of videos/live streams on quail. I feel that I am well informed and I loved this video. Thank You for sharing.

    we keep quail in our apartment in the city. it started with my 2 girls in 4H club before the pandemic and then when stuff locked down we went from 5 quail (1 roo and 4 hens) to about 70 no and we have found there is a high demand for the eggs in the city for raw dog food of all things. also people wanting chicks so they can have their own eggs in the city especially since about 5 or 6 months ago there was a huge egg recall in our area due to salmonella people want quail since they are way less prone to salmonella as they have a higher internal body temperature making their system less habitable for it yay quail

    Thanks for the nice video. I've had quail for many years and that's the only bird I keep. They're fun to watch and can give you endless eggs and garden fertilizer with a little of space and feeds. As long as you keep it at a safe spot with 14 hrs of light and above 50 F degree of temperature, hens will continue lay eggs daily until 1 years of age before decreasing gradually. Keep a ratio of 1/3 to 1/5 for males if you want to hatch your own eggs. You can use a no crow collar around the boys' neck if their noise can be a problem to your neighbors.

    the quail owner could offer eggs to the person who doesn't like the noise. this is a good place to learn from, as I am clueless about raising quail. I got chickens. lol

    Great video thanks. My four hens are in a large hutch on woodchip ( not sure quite what it is, hemp maybe,I use it in my chickens nest boxes too) They are extremely nervy and cleaning them out is quite a performance! How often do you clean yours and what square footage do they have? Mine share ten square feet.

    Hey! That’s exactly the same as me!! Three males and one very unfortunate girl. In the end I had to separate her away from all the attention then hatch another batch to get her some friends. It all worked out in the end but it was worrying at the time 😀

    @@cityself-sufficiency oh wow really!? I haven't heard anyone that faced that, very good to know someone else did and got through it. My hen is separate, but she's several weeks pay when i expected her to start laying. Did you end up just ordering more eggs? I had hoped to hatch from my own hen's eggs but that's not seeming to be what's going to happengiven all the variables at hand. Thank you for your reply!

    Heyo! Yes I did end up buying and hatching another batch just to get her some friends and from the next 12 eggs I still only got two hens! So much for 50:50 males and females 😅. So she waited for seven weeks while they hatched and grew. She was okay though, seemed quite happy in her run next to the boys so they could see each other through the bars and I guess not feel too bereft of quail company - I had to sell the boys on pretty quick though to prevent them fighting over her. I’m sure your girl will be fine by herself for a while, they are quite independent little beasties!

    @@cityself-sufficiency so far she's doing okay on her own yeah except no eggs from her and we're 10 weeks old or so. She's suuuuper jumpy about me being near her enclosure but doesn't mind the kitten. Since its been this long and she's offered me nothing to try to hatch I'm definitely looking at ordering more eggs at this point! Poor little henny penny.

    Do all celadons hens lay blue eggs? Or If they mate with none celadons will they lose blue colour? Love your vids very helpful and well made, iv just started raising quails love them.

  • @cityself-sufficiency

    @cityself-sufficiency

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hey peter! Thank you for saying you like the videos! The celadon gene is recessive and so only pure hens will lay a blue egg, if mated to a standard Male the offspring hens will lay normal speckled egg but will be celadon gene carriers. If these hypothetical offspring were mated to each other you could expect about a quarter of them to be pure celadon once again, laying the blue eggs. Hope that answers your question, Lauren.

    It seems quails lay an egg and walk off, yet my very brief experience in these matters leads me to believe a chicken will sit on that egg to keep it warm for hatching. Is that correct? Will quails sit on their eggs? Do they recognise the eggs they laid, or do they sit on any egg in there if they laid it or not? Thank you for your videos 👍🏻

  • @cityself-sufficiency

    @cityself-sufficiency

    Hey Paul. Domestic quail are very unlikely to sit on eggs as they have been bred specifically to keep laying rather than go broody. But birds that do go broody have a powerful urge to sit on anything vaguely egg shaped. My bantams will happily try to incubate golf balls!

    Hello! Probably yes I’m afraid so. I have a few hens I hatched in July and they have shown no interest in laying as the breeding season is pretty much over so think they will just wait till next year now. If you give them more than 14hours light with a bulb you could make them start laying though.

    Do you have coturnix? Only breed the birds with bigger eggs, selective breeding is really important. Ok next is feed. High protein is great for bigger hens and bigger eggs in my opinion.

    either your hens are still young or the gene of the hens causes that. Jumbo Coturnix quail eggs I have weight from 14 - 17 grams. I had hens from other source previously and eggs only weighted 9 -15 grams.
