When To Water Change An Aquarium - (No, It Doesn’t Depend)

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Doing water changes is an important part of the hobby. Our fish deserve the cleanest possible home and yea, we love to look at our clean tanks 😊
But how do we determine WHEN to water change an aquarium. Do our fish hold up a sign that says "clean me"? lol Of course not.
So how do we know WHEN to do them....Simple!

You should put a pothos plant in the big tank, I run a 200 gallon with 12 6- 10 inch frontosa and I don’t see over 15ppm nitrates ever I do water changes to keep phosphates low and diatoms at bay

Beginner question here: I have a decently planted tank here, from what I understood from your nitrogen cycle explanation, plants will consume the NitrAte so I'll not see the level rise all that much if I don't overfeed. When would I know when to change my water if I don't see the nitrate level go up because my plants eat it? Or what I'm saying makes no sense because I understood wrong?

I had a freshwater aquarium about 20 years ago and eventually gave up after suffering an Ick infection that got out of hand. Back then, there wasn’t a lot of information available on the internet to the average hobbyist, unlike the wealth of information and ease of accessing the information that there is now. I’ve recently decided to try the hobby again, and during this journey of planning and preparation to start my new tank, I discovered your channel and have been binge-watching all of it. Your presentations are informative and easy to follow, and your personality is engaging and keeps me coming back for more. I can’t thank you enough for doing what you do and helping this newbie to become an informed and empowered fish keeper.

Great video. You’re a good teacher. You make it so simple a kaveman like myself can understand it. My tank was already established, running for like two years and it crashed for some reason. Most likely due to water quality. It got away from me some how? Big ammonia spike. Lost some great fish. Almost lost my eye biter Sergio. So, on to do some water changes for me!

Thank you so much for this video! I've had a planted tank with snails for 3.5 years. Finally added fish: 7 black neon tetras who all died within 4 days, 4 corys (1 has red blotch), and 2 African pygmy frogs (1 frog is MIA pretty sure). Not only did I overload my 25 gallon, but I kept noticing higher than normal Ammonia and low! PH. One time it was just below 5. I asked aquarium groups and was scowering KZread trying to figure out what to do because water changes only temporarily fixed the issue, but no one had an answer. That is until I found this video. I now have a 10 gallon hospital tank where I am treating my 4 corys. I also realize how many rookie mistakes I made after watching your videos. Thank you so much again for these videos. I want to be the best fish carer I can be and give my fish a happy and healthy life. I am hoping to get more corys now that I know they need to be in a larger group once I get them treated and healthy and my main tank safe. After watching your videos, I think I have the knowledge to keep going with this. Subscriber for life.

I thought I understood my small little 10 gallon tank that I had set up about 10 years ago. I had it going to watch the little Glofish Danios play and a Betta Splenda during the time I fought Lymphoma (blood cancer). Those little Danios would form little swimming patterns (sometimes just 2" wide) on their own and sometimes another one would join in; then there were the games of chase. About 2 months ago, I woke up one morning to find most of my fish dead. I was heart broken, I told my husband that they were innocent, they did nothing to deserve this! It was an ammonia spike! I started doing research, and that's how I found you. The Stability saved the fish I could save, especially after a second spike. Let me just say I have one tough catfish and one tough Betta, they survived both spikes. So I need to *thank you* so much!

Always succinct and clear about what every hobbiest needs to know. Like my friend ben ochart who also has a large following on youtube it's a fluid situation sounds like he's joking but it's true everything is constantly changing in you're tank and it all depends on all those factors you so eloquently layed out. As usual good job clearly explaining the formula for success. Peace brother and happy fish keeping.

I do 50% water changes once a week mainly due to using EI fertilising but I also want to keep my nitrates well below 40ppm. I own two planted 5 gallon tanks witch don't produce a lot of nitrates. So i do a water change if the whaterhardness rises. I get more minerals in the water over timer because i don't use distilled water in my fillup routine. I still test for nitrates and ammonia at least two time a week to keep it in check

Semper Fi Devil! Thanks for all the great info!👍🏽 Question: With those (2)210 gallon tanks, are they in your basement? Or are they on a floor that you have to brace the floor in the basement for weight? If so, what is your recommendation on how to brace your floor for x amount of weight? Seen a lot of your videos, but nothing on this. Maybe you can cover in future video? Thanks and Semper Fi

Weekly change for my 15g community tank comprises of 12 glowlights, 4 glofish tetras, 3 Otos and 2 snails & 2 weeks for my 10g tank which comprises of 5 Sparkling Gourami, 3 Otos and 5 Amano shrimps. Irregardless of what's the result as I know I'll procrastinate and ended up not changing for weeks if the test kit says all is good. The most if I don't change is to top up water.

Excellent upload Kev as always. I run at 40ppm after 7 days religiously…that said, it’s 5ppm straight from the tap regardless so like so many others I’m on the back foot from the off so a weekly W/C of 50-60% with a filter clean bi monthly is undertaken. When it’s not filter clean time it’s gravel vac maintenance and this causes me no issues…..Sunday’s are definitely fish tank maintenance day…Would be interesting to hear other peoples schedules.🇬🇧

I generally do 30% every two weeks, when it went over a month, I did a big water change of just over 50%. Big mistake. Benefiting bacteria gone? Ammonia spiked. Black mollies got covered with white fungal stuff, ulcers and ick. Para guard didn’t even work. The only thing that did the trick was lowering ph. I added 3 gallons reverse osmosis water and 50cc distilled white vinegar to my 50 gallon tank. Mollies were visibly better next day! Did 30% water change when I could, and now we are back on schedule. I will never shock my tank ever again. I might train it to take larger changes to stretch out changes, but I’m pretty nervous. Changing the ph by just 3% made such a change. I was amazed, and the fish just basked in the place I put the vinegar in. They all headed right to it. Bought me enough time till I could change it. You know how life gets. My poor mollies are good now and as my loaches and snails don’t like copper, vinegar was a God send.

  • @KaveManAquatics

    @KaveManAquatics

Water changes do not remove any substantial amount of beneficial bacteria because they do not live in the water column. Even a 100% water change. Your fish got sick because of the ammonia spike, and the ammonia spiked for some other reason other than the water change size. Which could have been due to a number of reasons. But im glad to hear that you acted quickly and was able to get your guys back to good health!

I enjoy every single video you produce. My tank is doing well, the fish are thriving. But....I don't know exactly how much to feed the fish. Everything I read contradicts everything I read, you know. My Cichlids are about a year old, beautiful, 3-4 inches, most of them. I have about 20 fishies in my 75 gallon tank, do frequent changes of water and keep the substrate really clean, filter changes with chemical media monthly. How much should I feed? I feed Cichlid pellets .... thanks Kev!

Glad you’re enjoying the channel Holly! At 3-4 inches you can feed them twice a day. No more than they can eat in less than 1 minute for each feeding. When they get older and bigger, closer to 5-6 inches in size, you can switch to once a day feedings. I also fast all my fish on Sundays 😁
