Pups start learning social or pack behavior as littermates. This learning should be expanded to social behavior with humans early on, so the pups learn to transfer their sense of pack to a sense of family. Make that learning continuous to avoid confusion.

I socialized mine immediately. Next door neighbors. Random neighbors walking down the street with their dogs. Everybody. Both of mine are still guard dogs to the fullest. Anybody comes to the door. I send them " HOME " immediately depending on who it is. They know who's supposed to be around an who isn't. Routine routine routine. Though they never seem to bark when my kids are at the door lol

Hi there. My puppy is 7 months old and a rescue. I’ve had her three days and she’s already person possessive of me with my parents and our other dog. We want to break it early on. How do we without harboring abandonment?

I’m going to catch crap for this. Please avoid pet stores!! The puppies they sell are from puppy mills. Period. Oh they’ll tell you they are not. No decent breeder would let one of their puppies wind up in a pet store. Do your best to find a real breeder who health checks the parents. You won’t pay that much more. But you will be much more likely to get a sound puppy with an even temperament. And have a breeder who will be there every step of the way. I’d rather you’d look for a pup from a rescue than go to a pet store. I know. My first Rottweiler was a pet store-puppy mill girl. Born with severe hip dysplasia. Had cancer by 6 yrs old. And lost her at 7. I worked for years to get her behaviors under control. My Rotts since then have been from a responsible breeder. All health tested. They have lived to 12-13 yrs old. No cancer. No bad hips. And a breeder who I can call night or day with any questions. It has been a dream.

❤️👍Good one, but what if he's going to be a guard dog, won't socializing be detrimental?

Not socializing them will only lead to aggression against other dogs and humans, Rottweiler are naturally guard dogs, they’re always alert, I don’t think that socializing them would affect that.

The English word "socialize" comes from the: Lat. *socius:* ally, companion, or friend; Gr. *allos:* like or similar to; + Gr. *-izein:* to make or render. To socialize is to make/render something like/similar to a companion/friend. But doesn't a good friend still rush to your defense in times of need? Being friendly or social doesn't automatically mean being soft or weak. A well-socialized dog learns how to differentiate between actual threatening, provocative behavior and casual, everyday behavior, rather than feeling insecure about everything and guarding against everyone. And that should be our goal with any Rottie: a dog that is our friend, but still watchful against non-friends on our behalf.

Rotts will guard without training. As Texas Beast said they know when to protect. And when to cuddle. A real guard dog should come from someone who has trained guard dogs for years. And has pups who are from excellent lines. I know someone who trains in PSA. It is a protection training program. And they also have competitions. His dogs are so well tempered and socialized and bred that they are certified therapy dogs! Yet they are also high level PSA dogs who will lay down their life for him at any second. He is in a legal business where his dog accompanies him for protection. If you just want security around your house, get a security system. If you want a lifetime companion, get a Rottweiler. Besides walking down the street with two intact male Rottweilers tends to make 98% of the people move to the other side😆. The only people that will interact with you are ones who own Rotts, or Pits, Dobermans, GSD’s etc. Or adorable little kids who just have to “pet the doggie”💕. Which allows me to educate people about the breed. And what a solid tempered Rottweiler can be like.

Don't worry! Rottweilers have a natural guard dog instinct even though you may (and hopefully) never see that side of them they can distinguish when you need their help and when you don't. If somebody where to attack you you will see an immediate reaction from your rotti it would be very weird if they didn't. They will also alert you when somebody is on your premises I'm sure you've already noticed them barking. Bottom line they will know when they are needed as well as they are just a natural deterrent, nobody will want to mess with you when you're with a rotweiler. If your walking any potential threat will not want to risk the trouble any intruder trying to break in will be terrified when the dog starts barking A) because now anybody in the house is alert and b) because the barking itself is terrifying.
