When To LOFT Your Bowling Ball!

Спорт

Loft is an important part of bowling and is one of the "tricks of the trade". When used correctly, it will make you appear to be a magician with the bowling ball. Let's see what lofting the ball does for your ball reaction as opposed to rolling the ball into the lane. As always, I'm going to back up my lesson with data from SPECTO!

With the help of SPECTO data, it'll help tell the story about reaction shape, overall hook and continuation through the pins. Here are the SPECTO data points used and definition of each term:
Launch Speed - Speed measured off the hand.
Entry Speed - Speed measured at the pins. (What you'd see on your home center MPH screens)
Rev Rate - Revolutions Per Minute (RPM)
Launch Angle - The angle the ball traveled the first 10 feet.
Break Point Position - Board at which the ball was at its outermost position.
Total Hook - Total number of boards the ball crosses on the way to the pins.
Hook Power - Number of boards the ball hooked based on the True Breakpoint.
Entry Angle - The angle of the ball between 51 and 55 feet.
Impact Angle - The angle of the ball between 57 and 59.5 feet.
Pin Deck Exit - Ball position at the end of the pin deck.

    My alley loft requires on Friday and Saturdays. Leagues aren't those days and they know most league bowlers don't go then, so they don't oil and if they do its very light.

    Nick, years ago I was bowling in a 4 game match point scratch league. I was the sole lefty on the pair. By the end of the 3rd game I had burned in a deep line to the pocket that was reading early and I was down to my last ball, a Hammer Backlash (Blue/Silver). Moving in didn't work because there was a cliff of oil, so out of desperation I moved back to my burned in line and started to loft the ball to keep it from reading early. It worked and I continued lofting the ball in the 4th game. By the end of it I was heaving the ball to the arrows, but I was in the pocket and carrying. I managed to shoot 300 this game doing exactly what you are suggesting. I can't help but laugh a little because my strategy was the result of desperation, not out of being smart, but it worked and now it's a good memory. Keep up the good work - much appreciated!

    The way I see things Nick is you have both loft and L.O.F.T and that settles that. By the way, it isnt lack of, it is lots of. Your talent is underrated and always on display. As someone with not a very high rev rate; you show us you can play any part of the lane and at any angle. Now, on to the next video. LOL!

    Even your “consciously getting it down early” shot has more loft than I get naturally. I can’t wrap my mind around how people can hold onto it long enough to loft the ball. Is it just a matter of squeezing it more? I use a VERY tight thumb hole and have no reverse pitch, and I stink at lofting. Any thoughts?

  • @brunsnick

    @brunsnick

    Try delaying the rotation of the ball. I use a snug thumb and forward pitch in the thumb, I kind of visualize it off my hand how I want and use my plant leg to help launch the ball.

    Great Video!! Have you ever done a vid on how to bowl against teams in league that all bowl straight down the middle? Most with wicked spinner action that go all over. Is lofting needed then too, as everyone on my team including myself struggle with the way the lanes break down. What is a possible ball choice and place to play on a lane witht this type of breakdown. Thanks

    What do you think of those guys that always bowl near me, lofting house balls, thumbless, all night and getting radical spin, curve action, and yes strikes? Pretty sure some loft it out half way down the lane, and 5' high. I'm probably not a fan because my wrist can't handle it. Well it's irritating too, because they always celebrate, when I'm taking my modest conventional curve shot with minimal revs using a resin ball. I had my girlfriend almost convinced, that the patrons behind our lane were scouts for Storm and Brunswick, checking me out, but these guys always seem to show up, next to our lane!

    For low rev bowlers like myself is loft needed? I generally have three balls, a strong, medium and weak, and as the lane breaks down I just stay put and ball down as needed to keep the same shot going.

    Hi Nick when you loft you miss several feet of oil, when its there, so the ball picks up more oil and this smooths out the reaction!

  • @brunsnick

    @brunsnick

    5 ай бұрын

    Not really, the ball cannot hook or create friction in the air. Lofting shortens the lane and in this case, increased the entry and impact angle along with the continuation with reactive balls.
