Omg. I literally watched one of your videos on queen ants back in August, and walked outside only to find elates swarming the skies! I found so many queens with and without wings. But I could only catch one without wings, as I had only one test tube, which I had made out of to little parts of a container turned around. It was not a very good setup, but I loved my queen so much. When I got some good, real test tubes later, I moved my queen into one, and went out side to find more. But there were no more ants outside. Just the dead bodies of the male elates who had mated. I was disappointed that I had not caught any other ants, but I was very lucky to catch one for my very first time ant keeping. I cared for her in her new setup, and found out she was a Lasius Neoniger. I later read that most queens caught at the end of the year tend to go into hibernation and lay eggs in the spring. I was conserned that she would not lay eggs soon enough, and that she might die. But once again, I was lucky when I came to check up on her and found that she had two eggs! I was so happy! I cared for her and read everything I could find on lasius neoniger ants. A few weeks later she had a larva. I was overjoyed that she had made it this far, and by the looks of how she cared for her eggs so tentatively, she seemed fertilized. Now, in November, three months after I caught her, she has three large larvae. They should be going into the pupa stage soon, and I’m so proud of my queen for how far she has come! Holy crap you may be right. Today when I walked into work I saw ants swarming the entrance and all around them were tons of queens. I followed them up the side of the building and there were at least dozens of queens.

One tip I didn't really see here is; Check slow moving water or your friends/public pools during mating season. I can tell you as a pool owner, I find hundreds of queens of many different species in my pool. Also, getting a queen from your friend's pool is like saving a life as pool are a death trap for ants.

Hmmmm so I just messed up a little thing so your talking about nuptial flight season so now I know now that queen ants so I ihave done some research what they are look like on my house there's a lot of kinda. Insects then I kill one those.ah. I so dum I literally kill queen ants because I don't know there were queen ants oh can queen fly through the a solar light is that true 🤔🤨

I didn't even have to hunt for my queen ant. She managed to find my home perfectly fine on her own, and has now unleashed her armada of sisters into my kitchen from a crack in the kitchen floor.

You caught the ant species that stung my mom? Unbelievabley crazy.

Decided to start antkeeping this year. I live in Europe and I'm super excited because the species I'd like to keep happens to have their mating season earlier than other ant species. Since it wasn't mentioned in the video - Manica Rubida (the only Manica species in Europe) has it's nuptial flights as early as April with the height in May. Depending on sources they either continue having flights till Fall or have a second season in September only. I found a research paper on the Spring flights for the species detailing the weather conditions required. Basically - they never flight during the days when the temperature is below 18 degree Celsius and preferably when it's around 25 degrees. It is usually a day before it rains. The height seems to occur between the 1st and the 10th of May but across the three years of research they noted a flight as early as the 20th of April. Make a diagram of temperatures day by day - when the temperature spikes just to drop the next day chances are the Manica alates were flying and you can go looking for them. Sorry but I couldn't find any data on the Manica species in America. Hope this info helps you guys!

New to the AC Family and I binged 100s of your videos. Decided I wanted to start a colony and found a queen in minutes. Walked over to just look at an ant hill and noticed a solenopsis queen wandering around a little bit away. Could t believe my beginners luck!

Two weeks ago, out riding my bike, I stumbled upon a Tetramorium Queen. A block away, I found 3 more Tetramorium queens, and saw several dead male Alates. I feel very lucky to have collected this many Queens within an hour. We now have 4 queens, each in their own test tube! Hopefully, they will survive better this year, as I lost my Queen and her workers during hibernation last year.

Yep I know in North America it’s around May/June especially after a heavy rain 🌧 you’ll maybe see Bats 🦇 too as they feast on the flying Ants, there’s so many of them. Early May/June insects like this will show even on Doppler weather radar. Crazy time for all insects.

I randomly found a MASSIVE super colony after watching this video of little black ants aka monomorium minimum, with at least a few hundred queens and males just walking around some with queens some without, and I managed to get 10 queens or maybe a few more, and now they have tunneled like crazy now they have thousands of workers and are thriving thank you!

I was watching this and went outside with a container and was like “I AM GOING TO FIND A QUEEN ANT AND I WONT COME INSIDE TILL I DO” I went outside 2 minutes later I was freaking out bc I actually found one-

Coming back to this video after I just found a few camponotus queens in the end of October. I myself live in Australia and didn’t know they could fly this early.

Hey ant keepers a good hint is if you have an outside pool during the flights i have seen hundreds of queens in my pool during spring summer and autumn. Never had enough tubes to catch them all!

ADDITION FOR SOUTHEAST ASIA: Oecophylla smaragdina (Asian Weaver Ants) also fly November/Decemeber in some countries.

Thank you so much for this video! I'm trying to start my very first colony, but I'm finding it hard to come across the information in this video (in particular Australia).

im so excited to start my collection and eventually join the GAN project. still got some more studying to do but i think im getting there. spent the past several months studying ants and reading about them. watched all of your videos now, even antsaus and now nortic ants - small channel but doing real well including watching all sorts of documentaries on it. so ready to start. been going to nests and messing around just to see them with my eyes. about to build my setup as im out of work and money is tight. im also a former IV heroin addict and this is the perfect hobby to get into. i had snakes and spiders but my addiction led me to sell all of them :( not this time tho

There are actually a lot of these ants. Where I lived last year, there was a huge nuptial flight in front of my house. I caught a lot so i let go about half but still had about 20 something queens. (Prenolepis Imparis)

+AntsCanada A sidenote to one of your tips is that I would highly recommend keeping multiple queens in one test tube for Solenopsis Invicta. As long as the test tube is placed in an outworld and opened when the larva starts to pupate the colony should be safe. Yes the queens will bicker but the victorious queen will come out healthier and better off than she would of by herself. The nanatics will be better off too. The loser queen will leave the test tube which is why it must be open otherwise they will pretty much fight to the death. Alternatively you can have a bunch of opened test tubes in an outworld and setup an artificial brood raiding event. Eventually all the colonies will merge into one large one. This happens all the time in the wild and I managed to do this successfully in captivity. I, unfortunately, did not see it happen in person other than the fact that the colonies merged when I was away from them.

In North America, Bracymyrmex and Solenopsis fugax fly from Aug - Nov. This is also true for Asia and Australia. You can also find semi - culustural types of Tetramorium from July-Oct.

Can i ask how long does it take an odontomachus sp and formica, egg to hatch into a larvae, and aswell how long does it take to turn into pupae, and last of all to hatch into a worker. Please help me i got both of them last. Do you carry any products in the AC Shop big enough for Camponatus Gigas?

I've been pretty squirmish around insects, but because of your videos it at least makes it easier for me to see any lil critter. It's actually gotten me thinking on starting up a colony of my own, but I'm still thinking on what to truly get myself started with. Though I'm not the most patient, I'd still love to have a colony of carpenters, maybe even winter ants since I live in Canada and I like being in a more colder temperature. I'm going to plan out everything before capturing a queen, so that way I know I have everything to keep the colony growing.

I'm in my 3rd year of trying to get an ant colony established, hopefully this is the year. Hard lessons learned, don't move the ants too soon or too often! I think ants Canada recommends waiting for at least 30 ants in the test tube before moving I didn't listen and killed 2 colonies last year moving too soon. Thank you for for all the advice!! Interesting. I think I have a pretty huge colony of either Formica spp. or Crematogaster spp. in my yard (Albuquerque, New Mexico). I've been feeding them the last two summers and the Colony has gotten quite large. But I noticed late summer last year, dozens of the winged ones coming out.

Lucas Storsley I found a colony near the coast on a coccoloba tree but their numbers are small. I plan to go back after it rains.

So many of my friends recently caught O. Smaragdina and I’m still looking ..... even though I see several colonies everyday

I'm gonna be on Okinawa, Japan for a few years, and I just caught a few Pheidole queens in November-December. I'll be sure to keep my eyes open and take pics of any flights I see for species identification, and I'll list on the AC Forums. Hopefully this helps your data. I also want to join the GAN project but I think I'm the only person on this island interested in ant keeping.

easy you probably live near a forest go there at noon time and find some ants follow them to their nest and pour some lime mix with water solution into it and soon queen will come out soonly after 10 or 15 mins or so then voila! u have your own ant queen and it`s easy to find ants colonies at ur place its hard for me i live in a city i am from Pakistan and i am currently living in Karachi and it`s *d*ucking hard to find a ant colony near my place and even far from my place i can`t find any colonies so if u have some info help me please !!!! -____-

I found 3 queen ants recently, 2 different species both on my drive way and they were near an ant colony, all 3 have started to lay eggs some time in the 5 days since the capture. I may have to sell some in GAN, I will be the first GAN farmer in my area from what I can tell

No, wait until the workers start trying to get out, she will surive until the workers hatch and while they grow up. In a month or something the workers will hatch, then you have to wait a little more until they try to get out, then you can feed them a little honey.

Im new to ant keeping and today on my first day looking for queen ants (4/24/17, on my birthday :) ) I found two queen ants (They are red). I do not know what the Species is though so I should get on that. Thank you to AntsCanada for all the help your awesome my little brother and I couldn't do it without you. We order 50 test tubes but they come in two days. hopefully the ants don't get stressed out. We just have them in a small Tupperware container.

I've only ever seen 3 ant species in Europe. And all of them are super abundant. 1) Tiny black ones (that often live in houses as pests or near sidewalks); 2) Tiny red/brown ones, that look very similar to the black ones, but bite much more painfully; 3) Bigger (2-3 times larger in length than the other 2) ones that live in forests and build big mounds.

My backyard would have probably been heaven for you guys earlier this year. A few months ago we had a heavy storm and a few days later my backyard and my neighbors up to a few houses down were swarmed with ants. I would say there was easily at least several thousand ants there for awhile.

I found 7 at first i saw 1 then i tried to catch it then soldiers atacked me

During the summer I saw a bunch of insects flying in the air. I always thought they were mosquitos until I saw a video of a nuptial flight.

If possible can you do an updated version of this? Does the best time of day to look for queens vary by species?

Rhytidoponera sp. from September to November, Opthisthopsis sp. in December (around Christmas Day), Tapinoma sp. year-round (usually), Myrmecia sp. (bull ants) September to February in Australia

I am an ant keeper in SA and I have Paratrechina Longicornis aswell as a couple unknown silver- backed ants to me i do not know what species they belong to but black crazy ants I know fly from the end of December to February-mid february

I live In eastern texas and I have seen (and caught) many solenopsis ant queens already (February 24th)

For Singapore, Camponotus Psuedo Irritans are the most common species we can find (If i'm not wrong). I think the nuptial flight is around the end of the year.

Once in Northern Florida, I was working at a convenience store. Outside there was a crack (maybe 3/16" or 5mm) in the sidewalk. Just BARELY under the surface you could see a bunch of large-jawed soldiers hanging out and waiting. I found a spider and killed it, normally something I don't do but if it's feeding something else then ok, and set it near (maybe 8" or 20cm away) the crack. A few scouts were wandering about. One came across the spider and immediately made a beeline to the crack. THE VERY SECOND it turned down into the crack, the soldiers came just pouring out and very quickly dissected the spider and dragged it back. I've watched ants a lot but these were particularly organized it seems. I want one of THESE queen ants, whatever they are.
