Hearing this song after Barbara's death is impossibly heart-wrenching. It almost becomes a soliloquy of "what happens when I can't sing for anyone anymore? What happens when I'm alone?" Her voice was an absolute gift from God for the many wonderful years we were able to enjoy it, and I hope that this feeling in my heart when she sings is proof enough of the enormous love we all felt for her.

Barbara gave a subtle, touching, haunting, and beautifully sung performance.

When I hear Marin sing this, I feel understanding and compassion, when I here Betty sing this I feel sympathy and more compassion, but when I hear Barbara, I cry! emotional overload!

The softer gentleness of Barbara's voice is in a way more haunting considering how monstrous Margaret is.

Gore and Pitchford wrote When There's No One specifically for Barbara Cook and it shows. You might favour Betty Buckley or Marin Mazzie in the role but this song suited Barbara Cook's floated high notes perfectly.

They lowered the key way down for Betty Buckley and kept it that way for the revival.

Go Barbara!! She makes me cry. One of the most expressive voices I've ever heard.

These orchestrations are to die for. Betty’s version is still my favorite but those damn synths. They sound horrid. I love this full orchestra. And Barbara just sounds immaculate.

Is very interesting to hear both women singing this role.Betty Buckey is better for the part but Barbara is subtler anjd is good for the role too.In Buckey you hear a darker and less beautiful voice and with Barbara you hear a very beautiful voice. For me both were excelent:Betty is the artist you can choose for the role, with Barbara you see the inner danger who is also terrible. With Betty you see the danger and the madness fronm the beggining, with Barbara you see the danger after. You cant imagine Marian Paroo,Amalia Balash and Cunegonde beeing such a monster and this is the magnificence of her doing this. She is so sweet that is very dangereus.Betty Buckley is terrible vibrant .I likeed both women and I havent seen Marin Maazie yet.

Anyone notice that when the show moved to Broadway, they gave Margaret a sexy cream lingerie set for this scene?

Well, in the book Margret isn't that abusive physically, it's more mentally. Piper Laurie's interpretation introduced us to the physical abuse.

TheMusicalsFan Margaret still beats Carrie throughout the book, and severe physical abuse is menrioned when Carrie remembers the stones

Margaret's introduction scene (in the present at least) has her kicking Carrie in the ribs. She was arguably MORE physically abusive in the book than in any of the three film versions.

If people read about Carrie's Mom, not that it justifies her actions to her daughter at all, you do feel some sympathy for her earlier plight - because she had to see her Dad murdered in a gun fight and to cope with her grief, she unfortunately made the mistake of encountering and becoming an attendee of a false Christian cult which resulted her becoming as she did.

I can not believe that anyone would say Buckley's voice is any less beautiful. Her support is beyond Barbara's and her tone is way more beautiful. There is no reaching for notes with Buckley as there is here.

I didn't think she is flat. I also don't think that Barbara's version is anything but beautiful. I just disagree with anyone that thinks that Barbara's tone is superior to Buckley's. It is in fact different. Style, placement, and with different support of breath and power. I do still stick with my thought that Barbara lacked solid breath support at the end of the song. Still, a classic and a legend. I enjoy this version very much.

Robert Lee, Countertenor I know. I do think Buckley’s tone is still more beautiful and she sounds much more supported. Also, the acting shines through with Buckley in a way that it never did with Barbara (in this role). I prefer the belt to show the characters power. Just my opinion.

The sound of Buckley's voice singing this music is akin to that of a jackhammer. All steel. No velvet.
