When the "Worldbuilding" is just a Fetish

I was originally going to include this in the other worldbuilding styles video, but it got cut. Decided to make it its own video instead. So enjoy this monstrosity.

The quality of one’s worldbuilding should not be judged by expansiveness or depth, but how well the author incorporates their fetish into this world without suspicion.

Dude, one time I read this weird book about dragons, which I picked up because the title had stuff about dragons on it and the summary involved dragons, and then the dragon ditched the protagonist three chapters in, and she spent the rest of the book being abused until she gets to university, where it is then revealed that the entire magic system of this world is powered by sex and the reason she was failing her classes at magic school was because she was studying instead of fucking random dudes like her roommate was. I then put the book down forever. I was 12. I picked up a book about dragons. I wanted to read about dragons. I'm still a bit traumatized.

Okay you're in luck, I can't remember the title but I did some speedy googling and it's definitely 'Here There Be Dragonnes' by Mary Brown. I will warn you, it doesn't read like erotica, there's too long between the sex scenes and too much plot. If you want erotica, go read that, and if you want fantasy with sex in it I would recommend the GoT books over this one (I didn't like them much either, but they made a bit more sense). It's possible I'd like it now if I read it now, but highly unlikely. @@Ryan-iw4pt

The best part is that at a certain point, if your fetish gets wild and/or depraved enough, people can no longer tell the difference. If the big reveal is that your villain is keeping an angel bound by iron chains in his basement and drinking its blood to steal its power, nobody would bat an eye, but there is a specific subset of traumatized gay people on the internet for whom that concept is INCREDIBLY arousing.

@@Abd-kb7trAye. Any and all vampires in my fantasy world inevitably become Bi shortly after turning or reaching sexual maturity. The "lore reason" is because they're fully dependent on blood to retain their sanity. And since love and/or horniniess *really* gets the blood pumping, that sends the vampires into a high so great that it can be described as them being "in heat." Which also comes with a side effect of them being incredibly overprotective of any mortals they might fall in love with, since the vampires don't actually have a beating heart, but mortals obviously do. This is 100% deep lore and *totally* not some bisexual fulfillment fantasy.

Or a rogue who wears incredibly tight black leather armor and uses a whip. Or the classic duo, the sadistic healer and masochist tank. The cult just breeds incredibly fun ideas as opposed to generic paladin A and other generic paladin B

Also you have to put on this leather outfit and allow yourself to be whipped. Trust me, this is all essential to your penance"

Honestly, the idea of bodily based magic is kind of cool. Earth bending is connected to the feet, it's basically an unspoken rule that you either have to have your feet on the ground to bend earth you aren't in contact with. Fire bending is said to come from the stomach, which creates the body's energy, and the breath, and it extends past someone's limbs. There are definitely ways in which bending is linked to body parts. Different body parts and even bodily fluids being given different magical properties actually sounds like a cool idea to me, even if it could easily be twisted into fetish material or body humor.

Die wilde drei Zehen (The wild three toes / thirteen) Thus we have our Zehntologie - ten magnificent books! Ironically, it had exactly the wrong effect politically, somehow I came away from reading books designed to proselytize libertarianism thinking: Yeah, Communism!. Thankfully I later realised both Communism and Objectivsm are hollow promises.

Coincidentally, the video I watched before this was about how AI image generation has been making a lot of progress lately, including much better hands and feet. But it seems like that's mostly about advanced users who train their own custom models, and write huge prompts, and use AI tools to correct the bad parts from another AI tool's work. For the casual DALL-E user, not much has changed in that time. But I'm sure it will improve soon enough for us casuals as well, as people figure out how to make this stuff more user-friendly.

I've seen a few sketch comedy channels that really drag the joke out and it wasn't all that funny in the first place, but this was pretty good. Good use of a straight man, good bizarre activity for the novelist to be doing while on the phone, and it wasn't literally riffing on the same joke the whole time... I particularly enjoyed the very last gag. Thank you!

I'm always more fascinated by the people who clearly put an immense passion for worldbuilding into their deranged fetish works. Like, they have a dozen pages describing the complex history of their pantheon of gods, and a detailed explanation of how this ties into their elaborate magic system, weaving together a complex and rich world in which all their stories take place. And all this is important background reading for their 72-chapter tragedy about about a woman whose life crumbles around her as she slowly succumbs to the corrupting influence of an ancient artifact which serves as a brilliant metaphor for the nature and legacy of colonialism in our modern world. The only thing preventing the story from being the most compelling and emotionally devastating thing you've ever read is the fact that said ancient artifact's corrupting influence primarily takes the form of a desire to engage in the author's frankly bizarre sexual fantasies.

this is definitely the most common variety you see in the wild but I rarely see people talk about the reverse lol. I didn't notice how much of my worldbuilding hinges on what is basically religious power play, psychological masochism, and way too many instances of people getting high/mindbroken from wielding their powers until I sit down and reread my manuscript. At one point you just see the fight scene you thought was innocently cool and get embarrassed bc it kinda makes your pp hard :/

I did something similar once, but with vore. It was main stream, a societal institution, even had a religion built around it. The main character was a rogue wolfman who rejected vore, and so, being neither predator nor prey, he was a third-class citizen known as a "deviant". The message? "When deviance becomes main-stream, the ordinary becomes deviant." Needless to say, the story never took off, and never got finished. For this I am grateful. Had some good characters, though.
