Welcome to "Found and Explained" - Where Aviation History Takes a Witty Spin! 🚁
Hold onto your aviator hats, folks, because we're about to dive into the wild world of aviation history with all the sarcastic sass you never knew you needed! In this episode, we're unraveling the secrets of the Convair Model 49 - the aircraft that's as enigmatic as that one time we tried to understand fashion trends from the '70s. Oh, and did we mention we'll sprinkle in some keywords about Vietnam, the US Army, and helicopter design? Because why not?!
🚁 The Convair Model 49: When Aviation Decided to Get a Little Extra 🕶️
Gather 'round, history buffs and aviation aficionados - it's time to explore the Convair Model 49, the aircraft that thought being ordinary was too mainstream. This bad boy took the whole "helicopter meets fixed-wing" idea and spun it like a top - and we're here to unravel the tale with all the enthusiasm of someone who's tried to figure out why socks disappear in the laundry.
🌪️ When Helicopter Met Airplane: The Convair 49's "Hot Mess" Love Story 💔
Picture it: Vietnam, 1960s - the era of bell bottoms, flower power, and the Convair Model 49. It's like the US Army looked at a helicopter and said, "You know what? Let's give it wings and a dose of chaos." Join us as we dissect the curious case of how this airborne chimera came to be, and marvel at the audacity of innovation that had people scratching their heads faster than trying to fold a map in a gusty wind.
🎉 Just Like a Rollercoaster, but with More Rotors! The Convair Model 49's Ups and Downs 🎢
From groundbreaking design to "Why on Earth would you even attempt that?" maneuvers, the Convair Model 49 brought its A-game to the aviation circus. We'll break down the highs, the lows, and the moments that made us appreciate stable aircraft designs more than ever before. It's like the aviation equivalent of watching someone juggle flaming torches on a unicycle - equal parts impressive and "What were they thinking?!"
🤷‍♂️ Because Who Needs Conventional When You Can Have... This?! Join the Snarky Celebration! 🎈
So, buckle up, because we're about to navigate the twists, turns, and loop-de-loops of the Convair Model 49's story. Grab your popcorn and your sense of humor that appreciates the finer things in aviation - like helicopters that decided they needed wings and a dash of unpredictable attitude.

@@Thestuffnope In that case, you simply land. If it gets stuck in the up position, landing would be quite difficult but not impossible - some "tailsitter" concepts (briefly addressed in the video) did not have the cockpit-pivot mechanism, so the pilot would have to look over their shoulder to land. Perhaps doing so would have been part of the training for flying this aircraft. And if worst came to worst, I'm sure it had ejection seats.

  • @quillmaurer6563

I think of this the same way I think of WWI fighter pilots: Sketchy, perhaps, but way less dangerous or unpleasant than most other duties during that war. And helicopters are full of critical could-easily-fail-and-often-do parts. Fixed-wing pilots often describe helicopters as "An assortment of parts all attempting to become random in motion," and given helicopters' complexity that's not too far from the truth (granted I'm a civilian fixed-wing pilot so perhaps biased). I could actually imagine this being overall simpler and more reliable than a conventional helicopter. The one drawback is that it wouldn't be able to auto-rotate if all engines fail, and I could imagine with one or two of the three engines out it might be able to fly horizontal but not hover and land vertically, this aircraft not capable of safely landing horizontally. But also in its favor, unlike conventional helicopters, it could be and I'm guessing would have been equipped with ejection seats, so if worst came to worst the crew could give it the multi-million-dollar "fuck this shit I'm out."

It's actually called a "annular wing" aircraft and there were a lot of them designed (and some built such as the French SNECMA Coléoptère) in the '50s and 60s. The issue with the annular wing is it's not really good at level flight having less actual range than a regular wing. On the other hand you could add wings onto the hard points for ferry flights but even for near range flights some type of tilt wing would likely be a better option. My personal headcanon is that the side-by-side cockpit would likely have been replace before production with something more like the Cobra or Apache as it would allow a more robust tilting mechanism. (Going to do a video on the artillery cannon armed Chinook? :) )

This type of aircraft is known as a coleopter; there is an article about them on the Wikipedia. The only one ever built and flown, in France, crashed on its ninth flight. The pilot ejected, but by that time he had discovered the thing had many undesirable flying characteristics, and he hadn't even tried to fly it horizontally. Convair would have had to overcome all these problems. Maybe they could have, but I imagine it would have taken so much time and money that the project would have ended up cancelled anyway.

I get the navy helicopter idea on paper, but the navy generally uses jets for attack roles and helicopters are relegated to S&R, cargo - both personnel and whatever else it might need to ferry, and recon, which are all out of question for the Convair Model 49. Not to mention anything that can carry a helicopter is always moving fairly rapidly, so trying to land a VTOL that's slower than the ship would be a nightmare

  • @geoffk777
    @geoffk77711 ай бұрын

There are three major issues with this desin, especially in the 1960's: 1. Landing one of these, even with the droop nose, would have been very tricky without computer or TV assistance. This is what killed the original tail-sitting VTOLs. 2. It wouldn't auto-rotate like a helicopter, so in case of engine failure, it would likely fall like a rock. In horizontal mode it might glide a bit but with the big rotor blocling airflow and the heavy armor, probably not very well. So 3. Any engine failure is a critical disaster. You do have three engines, which helps, but it is unclear how many it needs to get home or land. This also makes it impractical as a Navy aircraft (and landing on a ship would be even harder than on land).

There were several tail landers that were experimented with, both prop and jet based. However, the problem was that the pilot simply couldn't see well enough to land even with close circuit television. These ideas might be possible now with computer controlled or augmented landing but there's already plenty of other proven VSTOL platforms such as the tilt rotor, plus helicopters have continued to be effective gunships.

People that stay in technology as they age tend to live better and more fulfilling lives. I am 70 and many my age have no idea how to work a smart phone or computer. I taught myself how to use a computer. I'm glad i was still young enough to grasp all the information I was learning. It's sad to watch an older person struggle with the unknown.

I can see why they didn't make this in the 60's,70's. But I could definitely see this design resurface in the next generation of drone platforms. Turning this into a drone would solve a lot of its issues revolving around crew safety/comfort. You could also make much more efficient designs using drone tech and amplify its capabilities significantly. The only question would be is it more effective to have larger drone gunships capable of overwhelming close air support or thousands of smaller drones with smaller smart munitions. I think both used in conjunction would be absolutely devastating but it might be a lot cheaper to just go with smaller drones and just as effective.

The Recoilless rifles mounted on the side, are single fire hand loaded cannons, that would have 1 round until they landed and reloaded. Also those explosions caused by them are excessive, they basically are lightweight anti-tank cannons or lightweight artillery, not fuel air bombs.

Great idea. In the manned version, it worked well before the advent of effective AA of the battlefield, but not in our era, as the combat vehicle is outdated. However, a UAV of this scheme will work great for delivering parcels, hot pizza or cold champagne at 4-30 in the morning. The outer annular housing will reduce the noise from the rotor to acceptable levels. It is very interesting as a compact kamikaze UAV, combining vertical takeoff, the absence of a starting device and the speed of ammunition delivery.

Between that and the mock-ups of small artillery attached to a Chinook that would extend out from the fuselage and deploy in a more traditional way upon landing, the US Army had some real insane concepts before attack helos were properly developed.
