I remember transcribing the first chorus of Stan Getz on this tune, I found it was such a great way to break out your improv habits , if you don't know what to play on this tune well here you have 9 minutes and 21 seconds of such great melodic ideas , it's really the best way to learn how to improvise

Perhaps some of us who listen,REALLY listen, realize Bob's committment to jazz. I have been trying to play sax since 1947. I never realized the le vel of committment needed to reach what I reached as a carpenter. Now when I watch and listen to Reynolds makes me reach for more with my sax and I am 83. Wow!!

Getz is always playing the melody…..he never just plays runs, scales or etudes to fill spaces. He is always reminding us of the melody

You SO !!!! get Getz!!! My dad played a lotta Getz at Home. he played Alto too. I witnessed my father practicing countless moments against the wall on super low volume. No BS, but my father had that sound down and melodic soloing without boring people with Chops. it was just that Time back then , Bob. I am delighted and thrilled on what Deep Level you rap bout Stan. If my dad would be still around to see your Video , he would have that beautiful Smirk ,giving you the full Approval. keep doing what you doing . Man !!!!

Bob, as a 77-year-old tenor man I have for 62 years been fascinated with the beautiful, intellectual complications Stan Getz finds in his creations. And the tempos are challenging. Trend setters like Getz will always be important mentors to all generations of jazz lovers who are truly serious students of jazz improvisation. Getz will never be topped. He will be copied throughout the future by Tenor sax jazz wannabes. Perfection cannot be improved. I appreciate your serious reveal of Stan Getz for your fans. Thanks.

Once played with a fellow saxophonist who said he knew a sax player who studied with the same teacher as Stan Getz. He said he used to dread following SG into the lesson room after hearing him go through some amazing acrobatics with his teacher. SG can be intimidating. Few cliches, if any, and, like all the masters, a seemingly bottomless source of melodic invention.

Your enthusiasm for the art is infectious. It reminds why I keep hacking my way through new tunes searching for grooves and licks and driving my family crazy. Thanks for sharing.

Went to a pretty well known jazz school for undergrad and grad, been around the country to a lot of different schools as well…never once heard someone do a Getz transcription. For the life of me I don’t know why lol. Super underrated nowadays

I love when stan starts to dance when he’s soloing. If you watch him when he’s totally in the zone he starts damcing as he solos.

Bob it was great to see how Stan has touched your soul. Your facial expressions touched my soul deep down as I do the same thing. I'm sure my wife thinks I'm crazy as I listen with my headphones on, jamming to myself. I really enjoyed this.

I've never fully understood the concept or should I say the method when It comes to improvisation but when you said play around a backbone it all fell into place , so thank you for taking the time to make these videos its a huge help for a beginner like me . Hope you make more like this one where you pick a tune and explain what is going on in the same detail

I bought this album in the 60’s and still have it, one of my all-time fav Getz albums. Over the years I’ve laid this album on so many young rhythm section players, as a shining example of how a perfect rhythm section should play under a horn player. Correction Bob, it’s Lou Levy on piano, perfect comping, Leroy Vinnegar ( Mr Walk ) on bass and Mr time Stan Levey on drums. I’d kill for a rhythm section like this today. I wish young guys ( especially drummers ) would play like this. I'd add my fav Getz period the mid 50's the album has been reissued on CD with a bunch of alt takes, called West Coast Jazz, consummate straight ahead jazz from "the" period. Thx for sharing..

Nice sound man. Imagine this. So I'm at San Jose State as a piano student in the 80's rooming with the great Larry Grenadier bassist, and Stan Get's calls our message machine. I hear Stan's voice leaving a message for Larry. "Hey man, this is Stan, calling to see if you can cover the Garden City gig next weekend...". I told Larry, hey man, Stan called... Larry was about 20. I was 21 at the time. My piano teacher and friend at the time Dick Hindman payed with Stan too. Those were great times.

Hi Bob! It's so much fun watching you dissect Stan Getz's phrasing on the saxophone. It's clear that he is a big influence on you and that you never get tired of listening to his playing. He was so smooth and lyrical...he didn't seem to waste any notes in his solos. When I listen to you perform with Snarky Puppy and your solo group, it's clear that you draw inspiration from Getz, Bird, Potter, and so many others. Thanks for the great video, and keep on carrying the torch of the jazz greats! Hope to see you with Snarky Puppy in the future - they're my favorite band and I hope they come back to New York or Connecticut soon.

Marvellous, Bob. Thanks for your persistence in showing what a swing meister Stan was. Special place in my heart for him as the first record I fell in love with at the age of 2.5 was Desafinado, and it was the way he played the melody. My mum told me I threw a tantrum in my playpen because when she sang along she didn’t sing his exact phrasing! I’ve always loved Stan’s playing ever since, but I’d not heard him play this tune before. 60 songs written and recorded in one year? Wow!

There is (used to be) a grant for rising jazz groups called the Clifford Brown/Stan Getz award. I often wondered why these two names were together. I now know. They both have the ESSENCE.

Saw you guys at the Bowl last Friday (May 27). What a treat. I didn't know you were opening for Steely Dan. You had already started when I was walking up and thought "man that sounds like Snarky Puppy". To hear 2 groups you love at the same time. Can't get much better. Oh man - looking for a place to shed takes me back to my road daze! Woodshedding in the band bus at night in the winter in Pennsylvania is not much better than in Phoenix in the spring. That’s some brilliant Getz that I had not heard! I do recognize the groove, though. I think it has a lot to do with Mr Vinnegar’s bass. I did a weekly club gig with him for a year and it was like ridin’ in a Cadillac!

He's playing enclosures.The Apasianado album is full of these type of phrases,sounds like it was something he was working on at the time.

I`ve been driving around in my `55 buick with there will never be another like you from Stan for days now.. and How about you.. for me listening to him is like Ronny Jordan on guitar.. its just like he is talking to you only.. melodicly.. full of soul and substance.. fantastic! Next up.. trying to play like the man.. note! Not there yet!!

Bob, good video. Love Getz, didn't use to but a friend of mine got me very interested in his final days and charge to Sax Heaven/RIP. I love "Serenity", what a recording. I met Kenny Barron several times up in Vail and his "Voyage" on this CD is one of the most exciting Jazz Tunes ever written. A Classic! Wow, how could SG blow with so much content for so long? Stan Levy was a swinging BEAST of a player...IMHO he was very similar to Shelly Manne in his almost internalised and very subtle groove. I love them both...

On these records you hear Lou doing a lot of those same triads, half step below the tonic etc, cool to hear them feeding off of each other.

I remember seeing these guys at the Keystone Korner in SF around 80-81. Place was packed to the walls. Lots of ball-breaking on the bandstand. The audience swooned. A lifetime highlight. You're right - it's the fingers. Check out Getz with the great Albert Dailey - a match made in heaven. Thanks for sharing Bob!

@@scrunchymacscruff1244 Wow Scrunch! My seminal moment as a guitar picker was seeing Jerry Miller in the cafeteria at Cabrillo College and realizing that, yeah, rhythm matters. To compound things, Skip Spence might have been the drummer who played with Frank Leal (sp?) at the old Hotel In Aptos, where I was many a drunken night. To my benefit. Correct me if I'm wrong.

@@andyquinn1125 'Skip' skipped around a lot. He helped Jeff A-plane take off as their drummer; also was with early Quicksilver; and of course, The GRAPE. I almost saw them at the Hollywood Palladium in 1970, but that afternoon got arrested heavily intoxicated by barb's. Finally, while going to SF State in 1977, I saw they were back playing with an announced appearance at California Hall (the location where Dirty Harry goes up on a fire-truck cage and negotiates with the nut who is about to jump..PANNONIA fencing club was established by Hungarians in the attic space, there, after the Russians came in in '56). You bet i was there. I put on my hippie best and paid 4 or 6 bucks and saw the legendary band and REALIZED you can only get 10% listening to the record. Right as they were about to begin I picked Skip out of the line-up and called out to him..he slowly cast a mellow gaze in my direction, and I gave him the PEACE sign. Very slowly he cracked a grin, and the show started. One of the best performances I ever heard. Don't know about Aptos, but..sounds apt. God bless PS: Ach! I just remembered, since the point of contact is tenor sax, I saw them the following November, or maybe January in 1978 at the CATALYST club in S. Cruz and I can't recall if they Had Cornelius Bumpus on board for the earlier gigs, but at Santa Cruz they sure did; and he played Honky-tonk on tenor sax like nobody's business, with Jerry Miller rocking it on his Gibson hollow-body. Hey Grandma was the limit, they extended the jam break another twelve minutes and there is so much more I could say. 'Corny' also doubled on the B-3. The days, the days..Oh, and if you look at my channel you can hear me try to be meaningful on steel guitar playing to "Now I Know High" from TRULY FINE CITIZEN. The documentary's called GLIDER PILOTS OF WWIII ~C.

Yes, Stan swings so hard. There’s a version of Cherokee that he plays where he put some really cool subs at the beginning of the form. I wish I could remember the album.

I was pretty sad that you didn't play the Little Rock show with Snarky Puppy. It was still incredible, but it would've been nice to see you live! I should've gone to the Walmart AMP show in Rogers!

I seem to recall the Coltrane mentioned that he really dug Getz's playing. Enough said.

I saw steely dan in portland recently i believe the first stop of the tour, such a great concert

Chet Baker also plays a sweet version of this song with some sweet 2 5 1’s. That being said, Stan was the man and he plays a very beautiful version of Like Someone In Love in this album. Some tricky lines and ideas worth analyzing 🤘🏼

This is so funny. In my district, the all-district jazz audition tune was “there will never be another you.” In my state (Florida) the all-state audition improvisation section includes this tune. Idk why but this tune is popping up everywhere.

Maybe an impossible question to answer but how did you achieve the Getz tone in your playing? I can recognise Getz’s playing within a few notes and I was stunned at how close you were to it when this is not your natural or usual tone. Totally in awe.
