Was 19. Remember well. So cold. Didn't walk the river, but sometimes I wished I had.

I lived in Sturgis Kentucky and I recall going down to the river and watching people with their automobiles cut donuts in the middle of the Ohio river on the frozen ice. I swallowed hard thinking one of those cars was surely going to break through and disappear forever, thank God it didn’t. Later in the winter when the ice broke up I saw that the ice was approaching 2 feet thick. At our location of the river it was about a mile wide. I’ve never seen that happen again other than maybe the next winter in 1978 but not quite as bad.

In Louisville, winter of 1976-1977, the Ohio froze. A painful memory for me, because I had to ride a motorcycle to work until mid January. (I didn't get a car, I left that job for a closer one.). I do not remember the river freezing the following year, but there was a LOT of snow. And I had a car. With snow tires. I have a few pictures of the frozen river. If I can find them...

Great stories. Winters can be tough in the midwest.

It was frozen here in East Liverpool Ohio at that time. I was 16 and only watched in fear as my friends and others walked across the river . A lot of ppl walked to Babbs Island. It's not far from the shore.

@@davidsobotka6183 rivers aint supposed to freeze? That makes zero sense . Why aren't they? And who said so? There are many rivers that are frozen for over half the year

@@MarvinMonroe you know how cold it has to be to freeze flowing water. Educate yourself before you troll bro. The Ohio river froze one time during 1977 and it was partially froze and it was negative 20 degrees for 4 weeks straight. Flowing water=friction I'm not going to explain science and physics to you. That's your dumbass fault for not paying attention in school
