Lowndes later laughed in an interview that he passed Bowe only because he slipped on the brake pedal and missed his brake marker. Still a great save and awesome pass!

4:57 potentially one of the greatest long shots in motorsport ever, holy shit. Credit where it's due, the camera man and the heli pilot keeping both those cars in frame all the way up and down the mountain is one hell of an achievement.

Good ol' Uncle Doug Mullray. When he left radio, there was nothing more worth listening to, and he was an entertaining addition to the V8s commentary. What a time that was in Australian Motorsport. Brocky still at it, DJ still the big rival, Perkins and Longhurst the fast terriers hunting down the leaders. I really loved it back then. Has lost something compared to back then.

You can see Lowndesy looking in the mirrors just after he passed Bowe as if to say "Did I just do that? Did that just happen?"

@ Kyle - They don't have street races in NASCAR, mate... They have two race tracks like ours (Pocono and Watkins Glen) but they're dedicated to racing, not street tracks like Adelaide or Gold Coast.

I remember hearing an interview once with Allan Moffat and they asked him who was the toughest driver to get past and without hesitation he answered “John Bowe”

That comment at 1'07" by Brocky..."Don't worry, Dads indestructible"...if only he could take that back 😥

Lowndes was taught by the best from Brocky. Couldn't have had had a better teacher. Even though we have lost that Great Man, I can see remnants of Brocky in Lowdes. What a class act ! "have a red hot go" was the order of the day. That's Racing my friends

Lowndes himself will tell you that he was a good three seconds a lap slower before Brocky sat him down and told him where he could make up time. After their first chat Criag was 1.5 seconds quicker in the next session. I take your point that Craig could certainly drive before he met Brock but there is no doubting that without his tuition we may not know Craig Lowndes as a household name today.

SVG is piece of shit.. Dirtiest driver of the modern event and probably the most hated driver because of it... If any other driver pulled half of the stupid shit on a race track like SVG does they'd be hit with a stop/go penalty every time... SVG must be bending over in front of the right people to get away with what he does.

Lowndes is the last Australian Racing Hero and it is all over now . Who wants to watch Mustangs and Camaros that have nothing to do with the Australian Culture . We are in a sad state of affairs in this nation now .

Mat Gee The first time Craig went to Bathurst Brocky walked him around the track twice. The night they arrived with a few beers, pointing out the highlites, early the morning after before the first practice pointing out the dangers! Saw an interview with Craig maybe a year after Brock had gone and he explained the help Peter had passed on to him! Lowndes was Brocks apprentice, no doubt about that!

How great was the racing back in the day, also how good to hear Uncle Doug again

I hope with gen 3 they try to bring that back with the lowering of downforce and different engines with different cars mainly but no Holden or Ford Falcon soooo eh, but the racing will be good

doesnt matter which manufacturer he drives for he's still a great driver and a legend

I'm a DJR fan all the way but 2018 when Lowndesy got that win in his last year as a full time driver.... mate I wiped a tear away it was amazing.

Lowndes is beyond any brands. Although he has more good moments and races with Holden, he had good moments and a good portion of his career with Ford too. How many can say the same?

Really miss the ATCC, Group A/C. Was always great watching a myriad of differing cars racing

Me too. Supercars is just not the same....its like gender fluid...the cars can be what ever they want to be with tacked on panels etc...

100% true my friend never be the same again and there's nobody to pass the torch to now either what I mean is Brocky passed it to Craig and there's nobody in the series to pass it on now which is very sad I for one don't watch it anymore only when Craig drives in the endurance races that's it though I'll always watch Bathurst but get exited about the race and results after Craig completely stops it will never be like that for me again 😔😔😔😔😔

What a flashback hey. Doug Mulray commentating. Older model Commodores and Falcons. The 1990s. Just everything about this is so cool ! There is even an old Mercedes running around out there on the track.

This reminds me of when Jeff Gordon just appeared outta no where on the NASCAR scene.. Lowndes made it known on this day. Even with the mix up of the back marker.

Here's two very alike careers: Gordon and Lowndes. They came out storming, won three championships in 4 seasons, showing talent. The series championships stopped kinda early for both, Lowndes even ran for a s***ty team in the early 2000's. But they remained winning, being forces of their categories, fighting for titles on many years

That EB Falcon of Dick Johnson was a beautifully balanced car. Very fast indeed !

I miss the multi-class racing. Made it a lot more interesting.

I think the 2L class was already pushed out to their category by this year. They started up the Australian Manufacturers Championship in 1994 which became the Australian Super Touring Championship in 1995. I'm not sure which was the last year of the ARDC Bathurst 1000 when the 2L class was invited, until (obviously) 1997 when the ARDC and V8 Supercars had a disagreement and the 2L class took over the entire Bathurst 1000 (with V8 Supercars running a second Bathurst 1000). Edit -- It seems that the 1995 and 1996 Bathurst 1000s were exclusively for Group 3A 5L cars, and the Super Tourers were not permitted to enter.

Lowndes is a pure superstar. I missed Bathurst this year :-( go Lowndsey :-D

The whole of Australia watching the greatest race in Australia witnessing a legend in the making, everyone on the edge of their seats and then a nob ruins the day! I remember it clearly, I saw the lapped car, I just hoped he wouldn't do anything stupid!

I still am driving an ED Falcon. I think that one Bowe was driving was an EB.

Been a Lowndes fan ever since this race, followed him to Ford, back to Holden, wouldn’t matter what he drove. No one can stalk the leader for 40 laps like Craig can, if he wasn’t pushing Reynolds for a good 30 laps, Reynolds would have cruised to victory. How good was it but watching Lowndes do the last lap on his own out in front. Pure gold. I am looking forward to seeing him and Whincup reunite next year. I reckon he can get to 10 wins.

When I picked my 1st karting # 888 was the only choice ! Had asked him a question a few weeks ago and got a answer! We don't get the coverage like we use to in Canada.

I love it "here's a merc" A MERC!?!?! I don't even remember them in this race!

Absolute bloody legend is Craig Lowndes. I'm a die hard Ford fan but Lowndes will always be one of my favourite drivers.

He had more moments for Holden, but one of his most remembered - if not the most remembered - wins is for the blue oval. Never forget the 2006 Bathurst 100

I cant believe im old enough (57) to see Lowndes hit the scene as The New Kid In Town, do all he did and hes now doing commentary.... Seen him lots at lots of tracks Lets not discuss Brocky. Ill cry for a week

They were doing 2:06 to save fuel in 2019 bathurst, farout.

Listened to craig on Rusty's garage Podcast and he said brad jones wasn't happy because craig's first practice times were over 3 seconds off the pace and it was brock that pulled him aside and explained how to race bathurst and the last couple of laps he had to back off because he was running out of fuel that's why bowe was able to get away

I'm a Holden fan but consider this race the best ever Bathurst, classic Holden v Ford battle & whoever won it was going to have well deserved it & whoever came 2nd was going to be unlucky. Pity that bad luck came in the way of a back marker affecting the result but that's part of this race, still it would of been nice to have seen it actually coming down to the 2 drivers who were both doing a great job.

John Bowe was a legendary driver as well.

He finished 2nd. That is not too bad, even today for Lowndesy, leave alone the fact that (from what I've read anyway) this was only his second ever race in a V8 Supercar.

Moffat, Brock and then Lowndes . The top three and the fact that this era is over is sad , and I loved that Craig won in his last year he stuck it up the lot of them.

If that moron back barker hadn't come across towards Lowndesy right on Murrays corner heading onto pit straight he would have won. How about the pass on Bowe on the left side into Griffins Bend. A legend was born in Lowndesy! It was also great to hear on the commentary his mentor the late great Peter Brock.

Mr Lowndes brings the best out of driver's at bathurst, like how many close finish's has he being in. Last weekend Scotty 17 won bathurst doing 2.06's these blokes in this clip were doing 2.14/15's. Absolutely a legend Craig Lowndes.

Best self promoter in history. He needed the fans attention more than they needed oxygen. Great driver, but the hold he had on the media meant that not many in the industry would speak their mind about him in public.

Wouldn't surprise me if this race is what stopped different classes running in the same 1000 as the v8s

Wow, they had different standards for backmarkers back then huh? Today that backmarker would be crucified for costing Lowndes the race, but they shrugged it off with "Oh well, that's racing!" Imagine if a backmarker shown the blue flag cost an F1 driver a win? They would just about be banned for a race. Seems like bullshit to me, Lowndes could and should have been the youngest winner in that race, and have retired with an extra notch on his belt as of last week. Btw I still remember watching this race live and couldn't believe that move by Lowndes.

I believe Bowe was in Fuel save mode and backed off the throttle and the end of mountain straight, that’s more or less why Craig was able to get round him, still a great pass though

With a manufacturer engine ... Where back in the days every manufacturers use the actual chassis of the car their racing... ford is ford ...holden is holden .. Now all different manufacturers using one same chassis frame ...
