When the Hour Comes Down

Another little meditation/reflection in the form of song to close out the month. Lyrics:
Winter wears a shroud of primrose
Proudly past the early frost
Black mountain sings like a lady
Wandering only to be lost
What’ll I say when the hour comes down
And I ain’t homebound?
Backbone straight as an arrow
Feet back on the solid ground
The whippoorwills and the sparrows
Silent all before my sound
What’ll I do when the hour comes down
And I’m played out?
Holes in my shoes
As I steal across the glade
There’s a darkness over me
But I can crawl out from the shade
I’ll ramble on
It may seem like I’m afraid
But I’ll stand my ground
When the hour comes down
When the hour comes down

As others have also said, I hear heroes of old in this. But it's definitely Carson McKee; you're finding your own sound. Ramble on, brother. Ramble on.

A "tour de force" Carson, you play a song like a casual Country song in my ears but at the same time, the words are deep, the text is full of poetry and you voice is a gift. "Chapeau" Monsieur !😊 Love from Brunoy-France. Yves

thank you, Carson! and special thanks for posting the lyrics, 'coz it is important to me: unfortunately, i don't understand english well enough by ear. this isn't first time i’ve listened to you sing; you have an amazingly beautiful voice and you are fluent in musical instruments, but now has emerged your poetic soul! 🙂

Congratulations. You've channeled the Muses. There's a depth to your recent meditations that is both reminiscent yet fresh. To use the D-word, it reminds me of both the young Bob Dylan, yet tinged with the maturity of Blood on the Tracks. But still yours. For me that's the sign of great a singer/songwriter. Guys like Tom Paxton and Phil Ochs, Iris Dement, and the great Texans like Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt. Keep up the great work.

Dear Carson, thank you so much for sharing your own song! I believe we all may seem as if we're afraid and we may be afraid sometimes, because we all struggle with ourselves. As one wise man said: "Life's not about struggling, but about love... But to understand this, one needs to struggle". Wanted to share this with you, because this motivates me every day in my life. Keep on rambling on, good man! Love what you do.

Lovely melody. “Hear that lonesome whippoorwill…” “Ribbon of darkness over me…” Of course whippoorwill and “darkness over me” are not unique to those songs, but is it possible that your lyrics betray, to some small extent, your musical influencers? If so, you are my kind of artist and maybe that’s part of the reason I’m so fond of your music.
