    I would love to witness an Australian thunderstorm! Here in the US the storms are intense but they don't quite pack that Aussie thunder from down under punch! I love your channel Liz I've been learning so much about plants and gardening from you! It all started with 1 cactus and 1 gollum ear jade. I've been waiting for the dragon fruit bottom of my moon cactus (not sure if you know the bottom of moon cactus is actually a dragon fruit cactus) to put out babies so I can get some dragon fruit in the coming years!

    I've got some little dragonletts growing as I type! It was actually very easy I just let them sit in some water to they split open then I placed them on top of the dirt in a little plastic pot sprinkled some dried dirt dust over them, for the cover I cut the bottom off a plastic bottle and misted the inside of it and the top of the dirt to get everything started. I water them with a misting bottle when I see things are dry. After about a month I started introducing regular air by opening the bottle top then gradually I took the bottle off and they're thriving in groups in little pots throughout my house.

    I need your advice on the following fellow succulent lovers: I'll be having a garden that will contain cacti, agave, some small succulents and aloes (thought not a lot of the last two). The question is: will a 50% sand, 20% peat moss, and 30% perlite mix be ok for humid Florida? We can get a few inches of rain on the couple of rainy months that we have. The garden will not be under any cover. Or 50% sand, 20% peat moss, 15% perlite and 15% lava rock. Unfortunately we don't have access to pumice and filling an area that is 225sq feet and 16 inches high with bagged cactus soil mix from the store is going to get expensive quick. That seems like the most accessible list of ingredients that our landscaper can get a hold of, but let me know what you percentages you'd do if you were in my place or if there's any of those ingredients that you ditch completely. Thank you!

    My front garden where I planted agave and aloe is mostly clay soil. I put some cheap commercial potting mix in the area where I first planted them, and they are now growing like crazy. I believe they are not fuzzy with the soil. Some succulents also have been growing in my clay soil garden topped up with the cheapest commercial potting mix and they too are fine. As long as it's free draining, they will do better in the ground than planted in pots. Garden soil mix in with decomposed granite if you can get hold of it will be fine. Otherwise, garden soil with a lot of bark mix in with some volcanic rocks will also do. Good luck.

    Hi Liz, thank you for the constant video uploads, they are a fun watch everytime. I have a question as a Malaysian grower-- you say they stop growing in high heat which starts in the high 20c's. I find that my echeveria still grow despite our daily afternoon temps of 32-34c. Does that mean that a succulent can acclimatize according to location and learn how to bypass the dormancy phase despite the harsher temperatures? For context, I do grow them underneath a glass roof with some UV protection so the patio area is not nearly as hot as being directly under the sun. Do shade nettings help prevent succulents slipping into dormancy in the high heat? EDIT: Hahaha the ending of this video!!

  • @GrowingSucculentswithLizK

    @GrowingSucculentswithLizK

    Жыл бұрын

    Different succulent GENUS (EX, Echeveria, Aeonium, Sedum) have different dormancy period. For example, Echeveria are Summer growers and Aeonium are Winter growers but can't survive in areas with extreme frost or heat (10 to 25°C). You can create an environment indoors to grow them but just like other plants, they also need a rest period. Some like "Some" SEDUM can be perennial, which means that they will completely die down to nothing in Winter but come back in spring. Too much information to write here but best watching my video and pay close attention to the NAMES of succulent that I mention to find out the specific needs of each plant/succulent.

    How can you tell if it’s dormant? I have some Haworthia (the green see through kind) & it’s spring here but been very hot. Worried about watering them bc the soils dry but …

  • @GrowingSucculentswithLizK

    Haworthis are quite easy plant to look after. The only way to rot them is if the soil doesn't have enough air circulation. If the soil is dry and the plant is soft and wrinkly, that means the plant needs water. I tend to soak the pot overnight.
