Having only taken 1 point in the opening 4 games of the 1999/00 Premier League season, Ruud Gullit took the decision to drop Alan Shearer for the Tyne-Wear derby at St James' Park. Sunderland ended up beating Newcastle 2-1 and Gullit resigned a few days later.

Amazingly Shearer scored 30 goals in all comps that season : 1 in 6 starts for Gullit/interim and 29 in 39 starts for Sir Bobby Robson!
Growing up as a young Newcastle fan under Dalglish and Gullit was painful! 😬 Thank god for Sir Bobby! 🙌
Gullit and Newcastle came to an agreement to terminate his contract shortly after this defeat. Gullit declined to have his compensation. What a man!

Ruud got us to an FA Cup final but his decision to feud/drop Shearer was bonkers especailly in 99/00 when he was an elite player it's like dropping Henry for Arsenal vs Spurs

Yeah this was a classic 'power' move by Gullit and it backfired spectacularly. Reminds me of when Rodgers dropped Gerrard for the Champions League game against Madrid a few years back. This was when Rodgers was feuding with FSG and the transfer committee over signings and when he was starting to lose the dressing room. He never came back after that.

It was an eventful time being a Newcastle fan during the 90s and early 2000s. The first season I remember is the when we nearly won the league Keegan was massive and then bringing shearer back. Didn’t massively understand it coz I was only 6 but it was the number one thing to get shearer number 9 on your back. Then Dalglish took over remember watching FA cup final against arsenal in Mallorca on holiday. Then Guillit came and there was massive hype. My friend was ball boy for Newcastle v Man U in the final. I remember the start of that season like the Wimbledon game we were 3-1 up then 3-3 then there was the Sunderland defeat. The rest the season was brilliant. We beat arsenal and Man U. 2000-01 we were injury hit I remember watching Aston Villa draw with us at home in the FA cup. But it was 2001-02 and 02-03 which were the best seasons. I still get goose bumps thinking about it now. Getting fifa 03 for Christmas and hammering it as a kid. Great times.

This interview sums up how poor a coach he was at this time. Dropping his most talented players, seeming clueless as to how to improve, looking low on confidence. ‘You tell me?!’ WTF - you are in charge, Ruud!
What Ruud Gullit did was like replacing Lewis Hamilton with Taki Inoue I can't believe he did that against of all the teams Sunderland and lose the game. Newcastle had started the season badly losing to Villa when Shearer was sent off harshly then following it up by losing to Tottenham and Southampton, blowing a 3-1 lead against Wimbledon to only get a point that match was memorable because Wycombe's boss Gareth Ainsworth scored twice to peg Newcastle back and then this wow it was the death nell toll for Gullit at Newcastle.
Gullit’s ‘suicide note’ dropping Shearer and Ferguson (£25 million strikeforce) and starting the inexperienced 20-year old Paul Robinson on his own upfront in the derby. Crazy isn’t even the word, can tell from this interview that he knew it was all over

That season WE finished well. Bobbys first game at home was 8-0 against Sheffield w. Ruud wasn’t a good manager it showed before the slump. He brought in so many players and we played so many pre season matches but he didn’t know how to manage. Fans (the bright ones not the muppets and Newcastle have a lot of them) knew and wanted Ruud out anyway. Was nowt to do with Alan that was just the final straw.
