The Greatest enemy of the French were the British and the Sikh Empire was pretty much under their control and they didn't want the British gaining control over the Indian Subcontinent(which is why they trained and armed the Sikh Empire). They didn't aid the Sikhs directly(except by delivering supplies of weapons) because they were busy fighting in the Carnatic.
