When Religion Becomes Toxic and Full of Lies

Amudim Awareness Event About Drug Addiction, Overdose, Depression and Suicide.
A lecture by Rabbi YY Jacobson presented at an AMUDIM Awareness Event in Forest Hill, Queens, NY, on March 4, 2017. This event was held in response to many recent cases of overdose and suicide in the Jewish community. This is a sharp speech about confronting the crisis of youths losing their lives to addiction and despair, and the layers of deceptions and lies that allow the crisis to fester.

This man is amazing! I am not Jewish but he speaks straight to my soul. I have been watching his videos for a hour and I can't stop crying! He knows that we are on a journey that we cant explain. I don't know why so many of us have been horribly abused in every walk of life. We have been stomped on since birth

What a responsible great man. To be the one who says it and be ready for all the criticism that comes with it. Kol hakavod. I relate very much and it's people like this that are the reason I'm still alive. Baruch hashem. Thank you Rabbi Yy

this is also true for baalei tshuva who don't necessarily fit it into the "box", aesthetically, and don't like this or that, or talk like this or that...or don't eat this or that... and are judged up and down, left and right by the "frum" community. and when you mention it, people sweep it under the rug. people need to get over the "YIDDISHKEIT"...and just connect to HaShem. there's spirituality...and there's culture. two different things. the word CULT is in the word culture. a wise man once told me "culture is the stuff you find on the bottom of expired dairy product"

Rabbi Y.Y. you hit this topic on the head! Unfortunately, the community in Israel that my husband and I were living in, they are horrible people, including the school where my husband and I sent our youngest. No one understood where our family was coming from, therefore we and especially my son was bullied as well as being allienated. I blame these ruthless people for the fact that my son has gone off the derech!

On the "vort of Yosef'being in a pit, perhaps this is the meaning of: כי ישאלך בנך מחר i.e. when your child asks for you and needs you מה העבודה הזאת לכם What is this "avoidah and frumkeit” that you do for yourself.. your own benefit. It’s not the time to go out and learn, to say tehilim, to go and daven with a minian.. when your son needs you leave your frumkeit aside and deal with him
