I cheated on my wife in the early 90's, She was the love of my life and I ruined my marriage over a hook up. She divorced me and I completely and absolutely deserved everything I got. My children still treat me like a stranger, 30 years later and I still feel I deserve it. I'll be honest and tell you I carry it around life a heavy backpack, every day of my life and I'd love nothing more than to be able to go back in time and have a long, happy marriage - just like my 3 brothers have. I'm 63 now and still can't seem to make a relationship work, due to developing trust issues over something I DID. My advice is simple. DON'T DO IT. If you're not happy say so and get out first. I ruined my life and would hate to see any other young man or woman follow my path. Not worth it.

Divorce is a messy, painful and costly thing. The advice to ‘don’t cheat, get a divorce first’ is oversimplifying the whole thing. The ‘divorce first’ scene guarantees all the pain drama and cost; cheating only ends up there if it goes wrong. I’m not advocating that married people should cheat, just saying that only in hindsight so you think it would have been better for you having experienced what you did with your spouse.

That happened to a close friend of mine. They had been married for almost 20 years. Then he started straying for some reason. I've been married for 11 years. I tell you there is no better satisfaction than honoring my wife and never disrespecting her by cheating or even flirting. Trying to navigate through a bunch of lies to cover my tracks and hide secrets with all that stress and guilt isn't nearly worth it for a night of hooking up with some other woman. Unless the person they're cheating with was not aware the cheater was actually in a relationship, they absolutely deserved to get pulled into it. The person being cheated on has the right to confront both parties.
