Hey, guys, it's not that difficult to connect the dots. At least I used to have access to some protestant doctrine and they were quite clear about this: presenting each other is a collective reminder of God's present - Christ, i.e. a novel way of salvation - to the people. (Santa - St. Nicholas, who excelled in charity towards children - is a digression. In many, maybe most, countries of christian tradition he is celebrated separately, on 6th December. He was just promoted in the USA as a more fitting character in a multicultural population. Like, a Jew couldn't care less about Jesus...) Not that I believe... But I like knowing what I don't believe ;-)

The spring birthday is spot on (but I think it's earlier, like Mar/Apr? and not 2018 years ago, the historic Jesus was born in ...4 BCE? or 6 BCE? I forget which. But yeah, in spring. All the normal "Christmas" traditions are actually Yule traditions. Christians took over established holidays so they'd be accepted. Santa is an amalgamation of both St Nicholas (c. 300 CE) and Father Christmas (much older, Norse tradition. based on Odin.).

I've been hearing these ideas a lot this year so wanted to share the background: It is well established that Christ died on March 25th and it is tradition that the annunciation, the creation of Adam (theologically Jesus is the new Adam - one man's obedience to amend one man's disobedience) and the creation of the whole world itself in spring also took place on this date (originally March 25th was the Spring Equinox). So then, nine months later Jesus would have been born on December 25th (significant being the Winter Solstice). The calculation of the year of his birth was founded on a number of sources including the reign of Herod as well as astronomical alignments that help explain the star the wise men followed. The 'error' is that we don't have a year 0 like we don't have a 0th century, so the year 2021 is Jesus's 2020th birthday. Yes, Father Christmas is a reinvention of the Jul Father merged with St Nikolas, but "Christmas" is simply from the Catholic liturgy "Christ's Mass" and can't be older.

@@guybolt I'm afraid you're quite misinformed. The truth is that we don't know what "dates" any of those events happened. Our calendars have changed and been adjusted many times over the intervening millennia. Jesus was crucified either on Passover or the day before (depending on which Jewish Calendar was used.) Passover is usually near the Spring Equinox but it varies because the Jews used a Lunar Calendar, not a Solar one. Jesus's birth was certainly not on December 25th, but the actual date has been lost. Some question whether it was in the winter because the shepherds may not have been "watching their flocks by night" in the colder months. Jesus was born sometime between 6 and 4BC (by modern reckoning) because Dionysius miscalculated the number of years when he created the AD dating system in 525 (He was surely using the best information available to him at the time. In any case we still don't know the exact year. Historical records just aren't good enough. According to the genealogical records in the Bible, there were 4000 years between Adam and Jesus. There is no mention of what date or part of the year Creation occurred. The Jewish calendar didn't begin until the Exodus.
