When Is Your Rabbit Ready For Her Nest Box

It is important to wait until your rabbit is ready to build her nest before giving her a nest box. If you give it to her to early, you run the risk of her using it for a litter box or just throwing all the straw out of it and wasting it. Luckily it is pretty easy to tell when she is ready.

    Our rabbits are pretty consistent about delivering on the morning of day 31. We give the nest box on day 28 or earlier if the doe is digging at the corners of her cage. Hay stashing is such a cute behavior.

    My doe Heidi is a first time mama, she has collected straw 2 weeks prior to the birth. Okay we gave her the nest box too early, but she didn't use the box as a toilet. Her sister Uschi did the same thing but had a false pregnancy. One morning we went to a doctor's appointment when we came back, Heidi gave birth to 12 babies. She does everything right, we really have God's blessing on her.

    My doe Dolly does that every time, exactly two weeks prior, In fact 14 days before delivery she waits for me to come to the cage and immediately picks straw on her mouth and stares at me until I put the nest box in the cage, then immediately jumps in and starts setting it up. She keeps checking in it rearranging straw till delivery day. Funny.

    @@brianmcconnell9596 Yes. Ever since she started staring at me with straw in her mouth exactly two weeks before delivery. She's been giving birth at exactly 31 days, so when it is two weeks prior I keep in mind for her to make the same gesture and I put the nest in. I don't know if that's a rule or not, but for my doe it works. No littering or anything, just rearranging and preparing it. By the way, my nest boxes are from cage wire a bit larger than most about 60cm long, 30cm wide & tall, and about half of the length with top cover, using cardboard to line it up. The entry side is about 20cm tall. After a couple of weeks from delivery I clean it, put new straw in it and turn it sideways so the baby rabbits still use it as nest or hide box easy to get in or out. They also like to climb up even the doe to relax away from them. Then at the end of four weeks I completely take it out. That's my system anyway. It works for me. Keep in mind my cages are about 1m long, 60cm wide, and 50cm tall, so plenty of room for the doe, the nest and the kits.

    @@brianmcconnell9596 When you say "stashing" you mean setting them on a spot in the cage or moving around with hey in her mouth? My Doe (and buck) every now and then sets hey in a spot she likes to lay down, but only carries hey in her mouth when I watch when she is ready for the nest. When I first set the nest box she immediately jumps in but not before first inspecting it from the outside for a few seconds. I guess it depends on the rabbit itself. The very first time she "asked" for the nest I thought it may have been a false pregnancy, were the doe thinks it is going to deliver but it doesn't (I think there is a video available in this channel for that), anyway it turned out she just wanted the nest earlier. It might be that she hasn't still decided where to nest, but it will eventually choose the box I believe. I hope you have a nice delivery and all goes well;

    We had a doe with blood on her but no babies. She ended up delivering one HUGE kit that appeared (due to bruising and positioning) to come out completely folded in half, back first. Experience with Malpositionn in goat kids had me really worried for her when time kept ticking and I saw blood but no babies for a very extended period of time. Turned out I was right. The baby died but the mom is okay. There would be no way to help a mother rabbit with a malposition.

    Hi Chris, Well we took your advise regarding breeding our 2 1/2 year old doe. (the one that was our FFA project and never bred before). We believe that she is pregnant as we see all kinds of movement and kicking in her tummy. It is day 32 but she still isn't doing anything as you mentioned that would indicate she's ready for her nest box. I am worried to wait because being a first time mom and 2 1/2, we're worried she just won't show any signs or indication and then just have them on the wire. She's a NZ so not sure if certain breeds kindle later than the 28 - 32 day mark. Again loving all you videos. They seem to come out just when I need the information. LOL! Never mind....she kindled last night or early morning hours. 9 total and one didn't make it. So happy when I went out and noticed all the fur she had pulled and had them in the nesting box. Thanks for all your videos as they have really helped us here with our new adventure! One question, should I be concerned that she keeps going into the nest box and sniffing and pawing around? I thought that they pretty much avoided the nest box and babies after kindling, except to feed them once or twice and mostly at night. I'm a first time rabbit owner mom and have heard horror stories of rabbits eating their young or pawing at them and killing them..... Also I checked them out this morning and their belly's aren't as round and full looking as what I see on the youtube videos. How long should we wait to see if she feeds them? If she doesn't and we have to, what do we use?

    @@hillockfarm8404 How do I tell if she fed them or not? Their bellies aren't as round as some of the images I see when baby rabbits have been fed. However, my husband states that if mom fed them late at night or early hours in the morning and I am checking them 8 hours or more after being fed, then they probably wouldn't have the large round extended bellies that are being shown on all the youtube videos.

    I love your videos and information. I hope you see this quickly because I have a timely question. I had a first time breeding of our silver fox on October 1. There were two successful fall offs. We were expecting our first kits around November 1. But, it didn’t happen. Silver fox breeders told me that sometimes it could go as long as 45 days. So, we kept the nesting box in and waited. No kits. At 50 days, I took the nesting box out and put in a Hidey hole that I built. One week ago, I had her re-bred with three successful fall offs. All of a sudden today, she started to hay stash copious amounts of hay in the corner of her hidey hole. She’s never done that before. The more hay we put in her pen, the more hay stashing she does. Is there a chance that she could go as long as day 60, today, to have kits from her original breeding? What are we looking at? I would appreciate your quick response if at all possible. Thank you very much.

    I am sorry for the slow response. I seriously doubt that she is still carrying young form the first breeding. I have never hear of a rabbit going 45 days or longer without kindling. No reason not to let her go ahead and build a nest though. Chances are she will get over it in a few days and go back to normal. I hope that helps.

    @@Slightlyrednecked thanks for your response. We’ve concluded that it was a hormonal change from the breeding on Nov 25. We had 3 good fall offs. I’ve removed her nesting box and will reintroduce it around Dec 20 or when we see some hay stashing. Expecting kits on Christmas Day. I’ll let you know if that’s ok. Thanks again for responding.

    Hey Chris, I hope you could help me I am new to raising rabbits and on February 5th I mated 2 my does who have never been mated or pregnant Their due date should be March 7th and nesting boxes should be put in on March 4 which is 27 days later. My confusion is about hay stashing after seeing your video. I usually put some hay on their cages every few days for their entertainment. They both wind up eating it or tossing it around. But today (day 23) when I put some hay in their cages, they "hay stashed" and went running to the corners for a while. I thought i would see what would happen if I put in the nesting boxes and one of the rabbits emptied all of the hay out of the box while the other moved all of the hay from the rear to the front of the box. So I removed both boxes and would wait until it is closer to March 4th. I guess my question is, when should I put in their nesting boxes if they are already hay stashing? Thanks 🙏 Poppy

  • @Slightlyrednecked

    That happens sometimes. Just put the hay that the doe pulled out of the box back in. I would go ahead and put the nest boxes back in and just keep putting the hay back in if they pull it out. Sounds like they are about ready to kindle so good luck.

    What horrible lives they must lead in those barren cages with nothing to do. My kids got three pet rabbits in a 15‘ x 15‘ run enclosure they quite often spend the afternoons chasing each other around jumping and playing, these rabbits are basically just in prison I couldn’t keep animals like that.
