When Is It Time To Wean Off Bottles?

Did you know that by 13 months old there should be NO bottles in your baby’s life?! According to the AAP they need to be transitioned to an open or sippy cup by this age!
So, in this video, I’m going to walk through the 2 ways to transition off the bottle and why this may be causing problems in your baby’s sleep.

This! You said it in the video. This topic is just glossed over. The movers are coming this week. I'm packing up all his bottles right now. Here's to cold turkey. 😅

This is so helpful and truly so very timely. My daughter is 10.5 months so I need to start planning this now. Also, I bought your sleep course 3 months ago and as a single mama, this has been absolutely life-changing!! It brought so much peace and flow to my daughter and my daily routine. She sleeps all night, every night. It’s incredible. Thank you so much what doing what you do! 💖

Why does the AAP recommend to stop bottles at 12 months yet they recommend to breastfeed until 2 (or longer)?

First thing that comes to my mind is the fact that a nipple and breast is soft and forms to the infants mouth and a bottle is harder plastic that really only has one shape

My twins are eating full meals and drinking strictly whole milk as of yesterday!! The formula shortage in our area sort of forced our hand to stop formula a little bit early (they're 9.5 months), but they eat such a rich diet. I'm thinking the next step for us is to cut bottles and, since they drink water so well from their Dr Brown's sippy cups, I was thinking I should order 2 more and use those as milk cups for the random snack time milk. Does this sound good in your professional opinion? They're learning cups at their meals in their high chairs but for snack times with two busy babies I don't take them and strap them in, so I think that using cups will be asking for a stressful mess for myself everytime... First time mom and just praying I'm doing it right 😬

Ahh I LOVE this video! Thank you ❤ my little one is 8 months old and she’s waking up about every 2-3 hours for milk. And she’s really in for it not just sucking a little bit which also means not much appetite in the morning and throughout the day😂 I need to let her know bed doesn’t mean it’s time for milk 😅 so this is already giving me ideas for now 😊

So what do you consider a bottle? So we started with the Phillips Avent milk bottles 4oz and 9oz. Then at 12/13m i bought the Munchkin sippy cups to help her learn how to drink from that but she kept choking, so we kinda stopped those. Shes not almost 16m and we got the Phillips Avent Grippy spout sippy cups and she's doing great with these ones. So we still do a night time milk bottle, but i definitely want to stop those because she has been having accidents during the night time.

I just ordered a full set of sippy cups for my almost 10 month old( preemie adjusted age 8 months bc he was born at 31 weeks) The plan is to go cold turkey. He does drink out of a sippy cup so I think he’s ready for no bottles. He is also eating some table food and purees twice a day but no meats. I haven’t done blw yet.

My baby was also born at 31 weeks he will be 12 months (10 adjusted) in a few days. Trying to figure out if the AAP recommends following adjusted or actual age. I will talk to his doctor but also like second opinions. What did your doc suggest?

Sooo this is tricky for my lactose intolerant little one😂 he's refusing a full bottle of lactaid milk in his dr brown straw bottle but he will take sips of it during meal time. When you spoke about taking out a bottle as soon as he wakes up to giving it to him during snack.....does that mean as soon as he wakes up to give him breakfast right away? I ask because my son freaks out if I don't give him his bottle right away.

So...yea we waited far too long to transition our 17 month old off the bottle. We have eliminated a mid morning bottle months ago but, she still gets a bottle in the morning one at day care in the afternoon after her nap and a very small bottle at night. We have just been told by her day care that the 18 month olds do not get bottles. So, we are trying to offer her a sippy of milk in the afternoon and so far she is not having it.

@@littlezsleep Thank you for the encouraging words. So, we have officially gone cold turkey. My wife and I found a kit to turn bottles into sippys. When we gave one to my daughter she got excited because she recorgnized the bottle but, right with the first sip and realized it was a sippy straw, she tossed it aside and got very cranky. My daughter is a smart cookie. We are going to inrgain in her that there are no more bottles...only sippys and cups. The good news is on on the same day we gave her water in a munchkin 360 cup for the first time and she figured out how to use in in less than 2 minutes. so we will keep trying. Until she is willing to have her milk in sippys we will give her more yogurt and cheese every day which she already loves. Will keep you posted.

@@littlezsleep Hello Becca! I just wanted to give you an update on my daughter and her post bottle journey. We had to go back to the bottle a week after we tried to quit cold turkey because she got very sick with a bacterial infection. She ended up in the ER with a very high fever and we just needed her to hydrate in any way we could because at that point she was even refusing water in sippys which she has been using for a while now. After she got better she started to drink full 7 ounces from sippys 2 times a day! We even were able to move her first milk in the morning at breakfast and she had no hesitation. We are still giving her a small amount of milk before bed (4 ounces). However, she is moving to an older group room in day care and that is when the day care gives the kids lunch and she will see her peers drinking from sippys and cups too. So we are going to be able to move her bedtime bottle to dinner time. We are just so happy that she is starting to get use to having milk in sippys more often.

So sorry but I really have a question! So when you say milk you are talking about just putting the formula or breastmilk in a sippy and transitioning, or are you talking about quitting the bottle and moving to cow milk? Probably a silly detail I missed, im just really struggling with anxiety of this transition lol Also do you have a good recommendation for good sippy cups to start with? My son is 11 mimths and still doesnt have the hole sippy thing down too much yet so im trying to find one that works for him!

In the same boat!! My son is weeks away from 13 months and we’re trying to transition to whole milk, drop feedings, and get him to drop the bottle. I’m a first time mom with no one to ask for help and I’m soooo overwhelmed with all of it

  • @PlanetKaylah

    @PlanetKaylah

@desireecervantes4599 I understand, it does feel overwhelming! I was feeling overloaded with info and ways to do it lol. What I just started doing that I found in another video, is I just started putting his formula in his sippy. I got him a good straw sippy and started feeding him formula in the cup instead of bottle. He didn't like it at first but he's already getting used to it! I also give him one ounce less than I normally do, to get him used to a smaller amount. Next step, after he's used to that for a bit, I'm going to do half formula half cow milk for a couple days. Get him used to cow milk, then move over completely. That's the plan. Obviously he won't need as much cow milk as he does formula, so he will have to get used to the amount being different

My daughter in law is staying with us for a while and she has a 26 month old who is still drinking bottle after bottle of milk and the baby only nibbles on junk food like dry sugary cereal like Captain crunch and chicken fries . I tell her she won't eat when she drinks a bottle of milk all day and night . I tell her to just give a bottle at night and use a sippy cup during the day but the baby always turns the cup upside down and it drips everywhere. What else can I tell my daughter she gets mad at me when I tell her that her baby Is too old for a bottle HELP I NEED ADVICE to help her, thank you y

I wonder if ignoring AAP guidelines is considered neglect. Ask if she is listening to the pediatrician's recommendations on milestones. If not I would seek outside help so you aren't set up to be the bad guy here.
