When I'm Her | PBS Short Docs

Michael Cusumano was a luminary figure at American Ballet Theatre in New York and had a stellar career ahead of him, but trauma from his past prevented him from fully realizing his potential. Over time, he finds refuge and liberation by assuming an alter ego: a sparkly turban-wearing, Russian ballet instructor named Madame Olga. Through Olga, Michael is able to give aspiring dancers a place to flourish - and is the mentor he never had for himself. "When I'm Her" follows the double life of a dancer as he inhabits his alter ego, and as Olga challenges authority, takes on a life of her own, and generates a following for her unconventional ballet classes.

Despite our love for ballet, some of us got scarred by professional training, and sadly never quite recovered years later. The hurt, insecurity and self hate has stayed with us and comes through in other ways, outside of the dance world. Now in academia, I still get that feeling of wanting to run away when I face rejection or produce inadequate drafts of my papers, just like I used to feel at auditions or in class when I didn't get the combination and had to perform it. Thank you Mikey. May all you give us come back to you tenfold. And remember that the Seniors love you!

Amazing film and it literally touched my heart ❤️. I wasn’t a ballet dancer but it was my dream when I was a kid. I understand how the pressure can break us apart and makes us hate what we love for so many years (in my case rhythmic gymnastics) . Thank you so much for becoming that role model that so many kids are looking forward to follow. I hope one day I’ll get the amazing opportunity to take one of your classes madame Olga !!!

Being traumatized at that age changes your brain. And it's so hard to get back into something you loved when its taken away from you by abuse. I'm not used to seeing someone like me, especially not someone thriving. For people who don't live with dissociative disorders, this video might be confusing, but for those of us who do this means the absolute world. We all wish to go back and care for the children we could have been.

This so reminds me of my early therapy sessions. I had developed depression in parallel with puberty, and the lens of depression turned what were objectively normal events in my life into subjectively traumatic ones. Those traumatic memories kept reinforcing themselves with each remembrance, re-living them over and over, re-traumatizing myself, until they became both my nightmares, and a curtain between me and the world. Decades later, the first steps in my therapy were to remove the power of those distorted memories, then ease the memories themselves by casting them in more realistic perspectives. The primary tool in that therapy was my current self, combined with the perspectives my therapist was helping me learn (via CBT). It started with talking back to the intrusive memories, telling them I didn't want them to play right now, telling them they were bad for me, telling them that what happened to that boy is no longer happening to this man. Breaking the repetitive reinforcement loop. It took time, but they did obey my will, and the nightmares became less frequent and finally stopped. That, in essence, locked each traumatic memory in its box. The next phase was to open each box, take out the memory, and really look at it, both with my current insights, and also while trying to understand what the boy was perceiving. This, too, had to be repeated many times, until the trauma finally faded, and I had a sad or scary, but no longer traumatic memory. I came to know that boy, to see and feel his depression, his confusion interacting with the world, and his internal and external reactions to it. I came to love that boy as the trauma between us started to fade and become transparent. I finally reached the point where I had all the tools I needed to proceed on my own, and to manage my depression without medication. Which basically made me something closer to a "normal" person. I did not take my internal lessons and share them with the world. They did not become an alter-ego for me. I see Madame Olga as the very embodiment of the path from illness and trauma to health and happiness. To invert oneself, to expose the resolved pain and direct it toward others to create strength and growth. I think we need more Madame Olgas before we need more therapists. I've never seen a therapist who could lead an entire class!

Kudos to PBS for bringing to light such a remarkable human being and personal story. Madam Olga is a SUPERSTAR of incredible luminosity! ✨ and owes her success entirely to the joy that her mentor, Mikey Cusumano, brings into this world. There are not enough accolades that should be showered upon one so incredibly talented, patient and generous. Just look at the faces on the children and adults clinging to Madam’s every word of instruction and pearl of wisdom. This world is a better place because of both Madam - and Mikey! 🩰

You've helped me get out of the blackness & push forward. Also, you are a gorgeous, lovely dancer!!! I wish you were my teacher & I feel so lucky to have found you, thank you for sharing your classes🖤 I've got physical disabilities that make my body hurt & beyond exhausted, (I don't have any medication anymore-...)so I had to quit ballet.
