That story arc really got to me. I have a close friend whose husband killed himself, and it just... broke her. She became someone else. She ended up being committed into a place like that, and she's still there. She's paranoid and terrified all the time, thinks the doctors are trying to hurt her, outbursts of anger and panic, messaging me in the middle of the night pleading with me to help her because she's being "held captive". I ended up contacting the hospital and offering to share all this with them as it seems I'm the only person she will open up to. Maybe I'm the only connection left to her real self. It's almost like her husband and I are the only people she even remembers having a positive relationship with. I agreed with the hospital that I don't mind talking to her, and I would discreetly share anything worrying she says with them like if she's threatening suicide or something because she just refuses to talk to them about much of anything, just paranoid ranting. But it's weird, when she talks to me, sometimes I get the same stuff, but occasionally, it's like she becomes her old self again for a little while, but then the next day, she will start sending panicked messages again. It's really awful to see a friend in pain like that. I hope one day she will recover.

There is also the fact that his pain is worse that ir should be because of his adiction to Vicodin, and he himself says his pain will not disappear even if he gets his leg amputed on seasons 1 and 6. He doesn't want to be miserable. He is afraid of change, and he is afraid of trying to be happier and failing at that. It's interesting that this episode really illustrates how corrupt and abusive mental health institutions can be. Without going into the ugly details, my mother ended up in a scenario like this. She went off antidepressants for a few days, had withdrawal symptoms, and the hospital dumped her in a place like this. She was lucid the first day and yet they held her for seven and kicked her out the second the insurance company stopped paying for it. We got no say in what happened to her because she had not transferred power of attorney to anyone beforehand. In that scenario, they could do whatever they pleased. It's a horrible experience to have all your senses and wits about you and be treated like a prisoner, locked up with actual screaming crazy people. Mental health institutions and treatment need some serious overhauls in some places, as where I am, they basically stripped my mother of her rights and treated her like an animal for a week.

"I don't want this, I don't want that. I don't want that either." Naming the drugs as I go along. When you dispense the same stuff every day, you start to become a human pill identifier. Also, I work in a (non-psych) hospital. I know what my rights are as a patient. I know what standards they have to adhere to to keep accreditation. When I had to get my Dad out of one the staff weren't too pleased to have someone like me as family looking out for him.
