When Good Reeds Play Badly: Know What Is Happening.

There are so many sax players that complain and complain about how bad cane reeds are. They say that most reeds in a box are unplayable, and they are dismayed at the expense as well, buying box after box and feeling the reeds are just plain bad, almost regardless of brand.
Well, the fact is that it is NOT the reed that is bad. It's the table on your mouthpiece, almost certainly.
In this video, learn about the acoustic interaction that should happen between your mouthpiece and reed. When it happens, all is well. When it doesn't ( and it doesn't quite often), then something must be wrong. Well, yes, something is wrong, but it's not the quality of the reeds.
Once you know this, you'll have a path to eliminating your "reed problems". I haven't had a bad reed in over 15 years, and I play them right out of the box. I've never worked on a reed ever.

I think it is the tool used to "flatten" is rotary flat on an angle, I've used a flat stone counter top and very fine sandpaper, with lots of caution to fix it.
