A really well put together video. You addressed all of the concerns we in the fire protection community had. Sometimes I wonder if the “grandfather” exception for older buildings shouldn’t be in place or limited to any building constructed at a certain date. Newer systems and technology do save lives, but they can’t when they are not installed or even properly maintained. Again, great video!

When i was in college, I remember that there was one time when the fire alarm went off (it was fire alarm testing day), 20 seconds later, no one had moved (admittedly not even me), and a member of staff then told everyone to head outside

@@Neptunesalad12 When they did the fire alarm testing, they never seemed to mention it to anyone, it was just knoledge shared amongst students and staff that the fire alarm was tested on that day When the fire alarm went off, I started counting in my head (and i think it was close to 30 seconds before we were instructed to head outside), i am unsure exactly how long it was going off for, but it ended up being at least a minuite

Great job on this video you covered a lot of information I think the number one thing in this video and this fire was door not being closed that would have gave a lot more time to evacuate even if fire alarms were disregarded until it was too late

I personally have been in multiple commercial buildings which have had false alarms including a apartment building, it definitely gets tiring. I admittedly when home fire alarms go off not immediately evacuate I usually find my parents and make sure my dogs are okay before we go and investigate if there is any smoke (I do check any handles I pass or go through for heat and if there is evacuate). It really depends on the people and their situations. With the knowledge I have gained, in commercial buildings when a fire alarm goes off I will personally always evacuate.

There’s this apartment complex near my university where false alarms happen all the time at 3:30 AM or so, mostly due to idiots pulling it. Because of that, I’m worried that place is going to have a fire or carbon monoxide leak and everyone is going to die because no one took the alarm seriously because they all assumed it was false and the fire department didn’t rush there because they’re sick and tired of all the false alarms

@@rodgodx345 it doesn’t matter what the door is made of. Fire doors can made of all sorts of materials. If the door has a fire rating, it will stop smoke and fire for a certain amount of time

We meet again

My old dorm has an dangerous evacuation plan. The evacuation plan is to go out the the first floor door in the common area which I found out the hard way because the stairwell across from dorm my room has a locked emergency exit door. I questioned someone about the possibility of a fire occurring in the common areas and they said that fires usually happened in the dorm rooms. There are also no fire sprinklers.

Yep, this is the concept known as "alarm fatigue", which as this recent tragedy illustrated _can_ & _does_ kill people. I'd say a big contributor to this fire was the fact that the building seemingly did not have a lot of the fire protection equipment it should have, such as emergency lighting & sprinklers. Fatal fires have happened before when buildings have been grandfathered in: The Station & Our Lady Of The Angels are two such fires. All these cases & more serve as evidence that perhaps the concept of "grandfathering" should be done away with in order to make all buildings as safe as possible. Just the same however there _should_ have _also_ been additional actions done when it came to educating the residents to _never_ ignore false alarms (since of course one of those seemingly false alarms could be *_very_* real), also educating them on proper fire safety procedures ( _including_ closing doors), & making sure that false alarms don't happen all the time (probably by getting a technician out to the site to take a look at the system & try to fix whatever's causing the constant false alarms).

This is just sad, If a building has more than 2 two false alarms a year, it should be checked out to prevent people not evacuating when the alarm sounds.

my elementary school used to have false alarms all the time. 70s edwards panel with loads of issues, and ran on est sync even though it was just adaptahorns. idk how it still passes inspections.

The only problem is that a false alarm can have many triggers as to why it happened in the first place. Many times, it doesn't have anything to even do with the alarm system itself, but rather, outside causes. Especially in places like a residential building where it could be tripped by things like cooking, smoking, or shower steam. Best thing to do would be to investigate a false alarm the first time it does happen.

This incident is a great example of "confirmation bias." People tend to find evidence that proves their claims instead of disproving them. Great video. A possible solution to people ignoring alarms is education or special voice evac with a phrase that pinpoints the location of a fire. A voice message used in Japanese fire alarms like "There is a fire. There is a fire. A fire has started on the 3rd floor, please evacuate in a calm manner." can be used. Perhaps pre-alarm can help beforehand?

I hope the media or others don’t blow this out of proportion and charge the person that left the door open with man slaughter. If that was me I would feel like garbage and not be able to live with myself. MY condolences to everyone involved

Yeah I can’t really blame him

Last week Monday my school had a faulty wire and caused a false alarm

They also did not do the 2 required fire drills. All buildings have to do at least 2 fire drills a year. Emergency lighting is the most important thing, almost no one understands that. In my building the central Emergency lighting last 33 hours in some places. All stair wells should have battery powered emergency lighting that last 8 hours or longer. Also the problem with voice evacuation fire alarm systems is they are not at all loud, some people just can't hear them. I like systems from 80s to late 90s

My school has had 1 false alarm, we have had 1 fire and 1 gas leak , my school takes them seriously.

@@FireAlarmDude5967 yea surprisingly, even after students smelt smoke and watched Firefighters arrived, everyone still walked out calmly and safe, We always had announced drills so I think it just Varys how much attention students give to evacuating safely.

Fire alarms are an extremely important life safety system, and false alarms are going to happen. But there are steps that apartment buildings can take to reduce false alarms. Like dont install smoke alarms tied into the fire alarm system inside apartments, dont need a false alarm over burnt toast. Stopper covers on pull stations should be required as well

Um were people pulling pranks with false alarm or so and there real fire if there were mechanical horns i might jump like a kangaroo at 1st and just get out fast

I think People should know when to evacuate because thats just a dumb idea to ignore the Fire Alarm because the only thing people are going to wonder that Is this a False Alarm?? Or is this real?? Well, It was real! And lot’s of people were injured! I honestly think you should evacuate every time!

You have clearly never lived in an apartment complex in which fire alarms are regularly triggered. I used to live in an apartment where we got false alarms maybe 3-4 times a month. I wish you lived in that apartment and could have stuck to your philosophy. The idea of you actually filing out 36-48 times a year because of a false alarm is incredibly amusing to me.
