When England Lost To Iceland in Euro 2016

England won Euro 2016 after defeating Portugal in the Parc de princes in front of a crowd of moths and some spectators. Jack Wilshere proudly lifted the trophy as he proved all the doubters wrong scoring a hat trick.

It didn't, it was one of the worst moments of my life to this day

Living in England. I remember this whole tournament because I told everyone I knew in my school Iceland would win and they all laughed at me. The next day after the game. Everyone was looking like I was responsible for the loss. I didn't care because I support portugal. And we won. I do remember wales vs england in school it was like a fucking stampede of the other classes coming running down the corridor after the winner.
Whenever the Icelandic players reflect on the 2016 Euros the one thing they all seem to agree on is that the England game was by far the easiest they played in the whole tournament. As soon as they took the lead they knew they were gonna win, because it didn't feel like England could do anything to seriously threaten them.

Having watched Liverpool play for over 30 years, I have never seen my club ran so badly and so pathetically as when Roy Hodgeson took charge in 2010. He was an absolute disaster, inherited a absolutey brilliant team from Benitez, which he started to sell off and bring in horrendous average signings. Turning a real European force at the time into some mid table scrapping results team who he had playing negative defensive football. Hodgson is good if you want to avoid relegation, if you want to win anything though you better look elsewhere. He was promoptly fired after just 7 months in charge, one of the worst managers and the worst Liverpool manager I have ever seen. Can we just point out the stupidity in Alexi Lalas’ comment at 4:29 … I’m a Costa Rican - American, and I can tell you right from the get-go, that the only 2 teams in 1st division England that a MLS side can beat are Norwich and MAYBE Burnley or Newcastle, and even then, they’ll be in trouble because Rashica will probably shred past every MLS defender at that point. Hell, when you think about it, Fulham, who are in 2nd division, can probably smack New England Revolution at minimum 3-0. Don’t get me wrong, MLS talent has improved DRASTICALLY over the years, but to me and possibly others, its like a retirement league, just like Japan’s, South Korea’s, China’s and Turkey’s

England are the only team who have won nothing in 60 years that somehow still hype themselves as favorites at every tournament...
The rot set in after World Cup 2006, when England failed to make it to the euros in 2008, then came dreadful 2010-2016 era.

Iceland did England a favor honestly, France would’ve beaten them about 8-0
As a half Scottish half English person I've got to tell you it's these matches that hurt the most. Losing to Italy was nowhere near as bad because Italy were actually better than us. You can only hope that the players leave everything on the pitch and my whole life I've watched 2 teams fail to do it so often.

West Ham fan here. The absolute bitterness from our fanbase over the selections of Henderson, Drinkwater, and in particular Wilshere over Mark Noble were unlike anything I've seen from our fanbase before or since. Henderson was as pedestrian as anything that season and Wilshere had played 141 minutes all season, while Noble had by far and away his best season with us. At least there were good reasons to pick Dier, Drinkwater and Dele. Hodgson is universally despised by West Ham fans for not even calling Noble up, let alone giving him a cap. The smugness and victory lap that some of our fans did after the Iceland game was something to behold. Partly because of Hodgson's failure to call up Noble, but also because this was supposedly "Tottenham's England" (of course we refer to West Ham's England as 1966). I don't think there was a club fanbase as apathetic to their national team as we were until Declan Rice got called up.
As a England fan I don’t talk about that

Not really. First Major final in 55 years. It is baby steps. Same thing during the 2018 World Cup. Gareth has helped the team with paying with fear a lot now they don't freeze in the Last 16 like they used to do such as in 2016. First it was the semi-final, the first in over a quarter of a century, and now it is a final, first in over half a century. It is like Gareth said last week, you have to start getting the latter stages regularly in order to learn from this experience. You can't go from 14th in the World and never reaching a semi-final to winning in less than 3 years which is basically what they have done. And now Gareth seems to practically have complete control of the FA and is probably the most influential person in the history of England football, I don't think we will return back to the "good old days" for a long time... well, not until he leaves whenever that may be. And that probably won't be a while as I doubt he will leave until he knows that his 10 year "project" (as he recently referred to it as) is safe hands and it is clear from the events of the last 3 months that he does not trust the FA with it all!

This marks the change which was needed and planned... even if there was a massive spanner put in the works by the Caretaker Manager; I.e. Roy Hodgson , resigning two years too soon, creating a silent civil war in the FA and many worried that this well thought through plan being 2 years too soon. I am glad it happened as we now the best Manager we have had and it has been done far more cleverly than anyone has ever given it full credit for.

How can you become great when you win FA? Another delusional pom.
@carlybishop6160
2 жыл бұрын
@@andrewsmith7118 Depends how you see it. First of all, in the 46 years between 1970 and 2016, England only ever reached 2 semi-finals. In the last 3 years we have reached a semi-final and a final. That is quite an achievement seeing the past record, plus I think it would be dillusional for anyone to expect a country which was ranked 14th in the World only 5 years ago to suddenly to be winning everything. This is why people abroad think England fans are seen as being arrogant because those abroad don't get how England fans look at the dreadful history and then going from 14th in the World to 4th, to 3rd to 2nd and fans call it a failure. Remember, this is only the beginning, this team who are reaching the latter stages are still never more than the second youngest or least experienced in any of their most recent tournaments. They will get better and be competitive for the next 10 years at least! Secondly, for those who remember the 'Golden Generation' it wasn't just the results but the way they played. They still struggle when they get to those latter stages due to the pressure and having never done that before. But compare how they played in the 2020 semi-final compared to the 2018 semi-final and you can see what Gareth means by you have to learn how to win these latter games. There is a reason that is always the same teams who win World Cups, they learn how to win. And while they struggle it is now in a semi-final or final, unlike say in 2016 where they fell apart in the Last 16 (which used to be the usual). England had only ever won 6 knock out games in its history (that includes in 1966). England have won 5 in the last 3 years alone! Finally, depends what you see Gareth's role is. I mean in that as in Gareth doesn't see himself as just the England Manager. That is why during his press conference for his 2 year extension, he didn't say that he was looking forward staying in the job/role but instead said: "I was very happy to continue a project where I feel supported". I am sure he would see himself as very successful. This "project" is something far bigger than the England team by itself. And it is literally has made him the most influential person in English football as a whole (whether you are 6 years old or in the senior team) and nobody has noticed it. Personally, I am curious to see what he has planned next. When you understand the significance of that December 2024 date, Gareth wanting to "negotiate" his contract extension all of a sudden and why they were so desperate to extend his contract by his contract by 2 years now, it does make it interesting to see what comes out of the FA over the next few years. And also will make it interesting to see what Gareth's role will be/ involve in January 2025.
SA trashed England in the RWC final despite the English media saying it would be a walkover for England
England is only in the discussion bc if the premier league, but the best players from premier don’t play for England
All this in mind, you got to admire England successes in recent years, I was at the euro 2020 final against Italy at Wembley and the pride in our nation was overwhelming. Even though we lost it gave us all something to be proud of after several tough years. Totally agree about the British media though, load of wankers. Luckily no one gives a shit anymore
