fun fact, the makers of this film chose mia to wear a lot of blue and seb to wear a lot of red. this means that when there is purple, it’s the times when they are feeling truly connected.

I've seen La La Land four times now and it gets better with every viewing. It's presented in the style of old-fashioned dreamlike musicals, but the story is so real and relatable, and I think that's why it hits so hard. At some point in our lives, a lot of us end up in situations just like this where you have to decide between pursuing your dreams or the person you love. Add to that the amazing soundtrack, cinematography, direction of Damien Chazelle, and performances and chemistry of Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, and you get a magical film like this. I think La La Land is going to age extremely well too. Sooner or later it's going to be recognized as one of the best films ever made, if it isn't already

That end song is the montage in music. He is telling her that he loved her in that way; the way where they could actually make a future and have it together! Jazz tells a story... usually a story of an emotion that is felt strongly and deeply. Just the way the video did for us (the people watching the movie) at the end, that is what his music was doing for her. This movie, overall, is so well made and well acted. Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling have a chemistry together. You can also see it in the movie Crazy, Stupid, Love. They are so fun to watch when they act together! This movie is a rarity, which makes it all the better! Glad you enjoyed it the way it was meant to be enjoyed! Thanks for the reactions and comments!

I love this movie and I've probably seen it 5 or 6 times now. But it's not something I can just watch any time because it always takes a little out of me once you get to that ending. It's like you said, it's more than just what-could-have-been. The movie's almost saying like one dream always has to die in order for another to play out. I like to think in an alternate reality this movie could've ended with them married and with a kid, and the what-if scenario was them both getting their dreams but not being together. And I'd like to think the audience would've felt just as bittersweet to see what they had to give up to get their dream of staying together. In that way, I appreciate the idea that no matter how happy you are, there's always something you lose in the process leading up to that that you can never get back. Great film, but, yeah, that ending kills me every time I watch it.

I saw this in the theater when it came out, and I teared up during the opening number, too. I think it was because I never thought anyone would make a traditional-style musical like this again. Your dog is the best, btw. He seemed to actually be worried about you crying.

OMG. Thank you Cass so much for reacting to not only one of my favorite musicals, but one of my favorite movies of all time. It is a Damien Chazelle masterpiece. When evaluating movies you look at such elements as cast, direction, storyline(s), cinematography, choreography (when applicable), soundtrack. Ordinarily, if you have three of these elements working well, you have a successful production. In 'La La Land' you have all of them. It is a pretty darn close to perfect movie in my estimation. And a movie I continually come back to. Heck, just the musical numbers alone are worth the price of admission. My three favorite scenes are 1) The Observatory (Planetarium Sequence) 2) Mia's audition 'For the Ones Who Dream, and 3) 'City of Stars', Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone sitting at the piano. All of these scenes bring me to tears. When I first saw the movie with my Mom and Dad (God rest their souls) who have sadly passed away since, I turned to both of them and we did not exchange words, but looked at each other as though we were watching cinematic history. 'La La Land' is such a movie and I predict that it will be looked upon by future generations as perhaps the best representation of 21st century cinema. ❤

One reason I love this movie is that it is the rare story that is no "finding the one", but "finding the one before" who pushes you, helps you grow so that you're ready to find "the right one". Sebastian pushed Mia to do the thing that got her her break (and actually pushed her to make the leap to pursue that course once she was noticed), and Mia pushed Seb into making his idea of a club into a reality. But, they weren't quite right together at that time as a relationship, and as the last musical sequence plays with, you can still think "oh, what if...?" I have a couple other movies that have the same general theme - not "the one", but "the one who gets you ready for 'the one'"... but I won't name them as that is a bit of a spoiler.

Totally agree 💯Expressed very much the same sentiments in my comments. What I find amazing is that the You Tube reactors I watch who do mostly movies such as Popcorn in Bed, Ashleigh Burton, Madison K. Thames, etc. have never reacted to 'La La Land.' Perhaps it is the copyright issue as Cass alluded to in her opening comments. In any case, how great is Cass for doing this movie. I am not on Patreon, but I hope she sees our comments because I just want to thank her and express my appreciation for reacting to this great movie.

The observation you made around 21:40 was honestly really perceptive, it ties in very well with what Seb said earlier in the film about LA being the place where "they worship everything and value nothing". Seb achieves success and popularity by playing music that has mainstream appeal (worshipped by the masses) but doesn't appeal to him, while his and Mia's artistic passions are treated with scorn (given no value) by the same people, meaning it takes a lot of hard work, sacrifice and in some cases dumb luck for them to even have a chance of success. For all the Hollywood glitz and glamour and fairytale romance, La La Land is a surprisingly cynical film at its core, yet still feels wonderfully earnest and sincere, which I think is why a lot of people really gravitated towards it. Well, also the fantastically staged musical numbers, Ryan and Emma's immaculate chemistry, and the astoundingly brilliant direction - if you ever want to feel inadequate about your own accomplishments, remember that Damien Chazelle was only 30-31 when he made this film. If you're looking for other recommendations for reactions, I'd definitely put forward Whiplash, also made by Damien Chazelle - it covers similar ideas to La La Land, but in a VERY different way, and it's also just an absolutely amazing film in general.

One of my favorite movies of that year, including the winner of best picture, Moonlight. Beautiful way of putting how fleeting people in our lives can be and how they help shape us into the people we're meant to be, even if it leads to heart-break. The ending of them mutually looking at each other and nodding in respect, happy that both ended where they wanted to be and where they're meant to despite an end of their love story.

Since you often mentioned the colors in this movie, this is not by accident, but totally on purpose. It actually has a pretty significant meaning for the movie on a subconscious level. There is a video on YT called "when the director happens to be an expert in colour theory", which is pretty nice to watch and gives you so much more insight to this movie. And it made me a little emotional in the end, too.

It would probably be better to wait until Halloween to watch the freaky rock musical "Phantom Of the Paradise". It's similar to the cult classic "Rocky Horror Picture Show", but BETTER. It was the movie Brian De Palma did just before "Carrie", which is another great movie to watch for the Halloween season. The old Judy Garland musical "Meet me in St. Louis" had an interesting Halloween scene in it, but you could watch that at Christmas too. Her singing of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" was an iconic moment in film history. I'm not religious, but I did enjoy the unique style of "Jesus Christ Superstar". The singing in that movie is fantastic! My favorite old musical with a comedic style was "How to Succeed in Business". And even though it's not a musical, be sure to watch "Office Space" someday.

The Last Five Years and Tick Tick Boom are other similar modern musicals telling similar stories, though La La Land is probably the best executed and most nuanced of them. Well Cass, now that you've watched this movie, here's something for you. There was a band I found out about like 3-4 years ago called The Midnight. If you don't know them, they have great songs, very much 80's synth inspired. Check out some videos of their songs iin which some are fanmade and inspired by some classic 80's teen movie: "Sunset", "Gloria", "Comet", "Last Train", "Lost Boy" Memories", etc. Anyways, back to my point, while checking them out, I found a fanmade video of the movie La La Land with the band's song "Los Angeles".
