I love the unintentional foreshadowing at the end of The Hand of Fear, with the dog and Sarah Jane whistling "Daddy wouldn't buy me a bow-wow", and the Doctor later sending her K9. They couldn't have planned that any better.

DOCTOR: Glasgow, I think. CLARA: Ah. You'll fit right in. Scottish. DOCTOR: Right. Shall we, er. Do you want to go and get some coffee, or chips, or something? Or chips and coffee? CLARA: Coffee. Coffee would be great. You're buying. DOCTOR: I don't have any money. CLARA: You're fetching, then. Next episode: CLARA: Where the hell have you been? DOCTOR: You sent me for coffee. CLARA: Three weeks ago. In Glasgow. DOCTOR: Three weeks, that's a long time. CLARA: In Glasgow. That's dead in a ditch.

bonus that is NEVER mentioned:When Ten meets Sarah Jane in School Reunion she says "You've Regenerated" and he says "Half a dozen times since we last met" so 6 times. What no one ever mentions is that this was originally a mistake. You don't always catch it as you think oh 4th doctor to 10th doctor, 6 regenerations.HOWEVER! In "The Five Doctors" Sarah Jane meets the 5th doctor, played by Peter Davison. With the addition of the War Doctor, this makes Sarah Jane the only person the Doctor never lied to about how many times he had regenerated. It's a mistake turned long-term easter egg, and it really holds that Continuity together.

I agree and disagree. There's a beauty to the silence of the moment. But also while we don't have music playing in the background of our most emotional moments, we do listen to music while thinking about these memories. And often we associate specific musical tracks with specific memories or eras of our lives (so much so that when we listen to those tracks again, we feel those feelings rushing back to us, i.e., nostalgia). So adding background music to a scene can be seen as an abstraction of that phenomenon.

Ironically the song Sarah Jane is whistling at the end of "Hand of Fear" is called "Daddy Wouldn't Buy Me A Bow-Wow"; now take into consideration that K-9 hadn't been written into the show yet and the thought of the attempted spin-off "K-9 and Company" was not even a glimmer in Bob Baker and Dave Martin's combined imagination and it just shows how much gold can be found in pure coincidences. ^_^

I am 59 years old today. I still remember that gutted feeling, when Elizabeth Sladen left the Doctor, over 40-odd years ago. I loved her as a companion and Tom of course, was just the perfect Doctor. For me, the most amazing thing about Dr Who, is the emotional blow it delivers to its audience every few years, when a Doctor regenerates or a companion departs: perhaps in many ways, it taught us kids, how to deal with life, the ups and downs...? With regards to Elizabeth Sladen....a beautiful woman who never seemed to age and I'm so glad she became a star in her own right, with her own show, sadly, all too short a time. My god, I was lucky as a kid: the actors who entertained me, were professional, classy and knew what the hell they were doing!! Great upload, thanks for my birthday present.

4:22 This scene is doubly sad. Not only does the Doctor know hes going to change soon, as SJ's death is canon in show as in real life, and as she only had a couple of years left from that episode, its almost as if he knew that. Thay giant pause between "is this the last time ive ever going to see you?" and the doctors slightly glib, uncommited awnser, plus the thousand yard stare after she leaves almost makes it seem like he knows shes on borrowed time but cannot possibly face up to the fact that she will in fact, die. He knows, to some extent that, yes, this is going to be one of the last time he sees her, and coupled with his own impending sense of mortality it must kill him inside. The doctor knowing the deaths of alot of his companions does seem the kind of morbidly worldwise thing hed do. It adds *layers* of sadness to that one scene. What a beautiful show and what a beautiful woman. It breaks your heart.

Bit late but you're absolutely right. In a Comic Con Panel in like 2009, there's a video of it somewhere here. David said that it was amazing and surreal to hear his childhood companion call him the Doctor.
That final hug scene is made even better knowing that Tennant grew up watching Sladen and Tom Baker flying through the stars in that rickety old police box. And now here he is, playing the role of the Doctor, flying that very police box through the stars, and getting to meet and work with Sladen herself. Bet that was truly a magical moment on set. Rest in peace Elisabeth Sladen, you will never EVER be forgotten...

Oh, Liz Sladen. I will always believe that The Doctor loved Sarah Jane in a way he never loved any other companion. It wasn't romantic love. It wasn't familial love. It was simply... love. I think their love rose above a label and a surname. Time didn't change it. Distance didn't break it. Sarah Jane was/is the best companion of them all.
A grown man of sixty should not be moved to tears by a clip from a 'kids' TV show ... but here we are :O And watching that section with Tom Baker (the bulk of 'my' years tho' Pertwee was truly my Doctor) I suddenly realised why I had such a love for Kaylee from Firefly and Dr. Keller from Stargate Atlantis ... it's because Jewel Staite strongly reminds me of Elisabeth Sladen

Sadly we're losing those characters one after another... :( And not all of them could easily come back "in universe". The return of Mel is great IMO, as whilst she's by far probably nobody's first choice, I think under RTD she could be brilliant... Although given the last time we saw her, I really don't see how she made her way back to 'current' Earth...

Oh... that last line. Yes, it was remedied in The Star Beast, but the fact Sarah says no one will EVER forget The Doctor when he KNOWS Donna is going to HAVE to forget him and he'll live with that for thousands of years and his face as Sarah's leaving... That hurts more than I remembered
Sarah Jane, what a companion. She will never be forgotten.

The Sarah Jane character ranked with the best of the Doctors, she is sadly missed.
Quite poignant that the finale scene was not only the actual last scene David Tennant filmed as the doctor while playing the 10th doctor it was also at a moment where the character knew he was going to die soon.
Tom and Liz played Sarah's departure scene beautifully...really gets you in the feels...the best companion farewell scene in the classic series. - Chris
She was so gorgeous in every possible way. She is truly missed.
My god, this makes me miss Elizabeth Sladen so much 😔
My mother's favourite classic who companion was Sarah Jane Smith, because her first two names were also Sarah Jane. Unfortunately both her and Elizabeth Sladen died from breast cancer. RIP to my two childhood heroes
Partly continuity, and partly that when you have a character played by an actress as compelling as Elizabeth Sladen, you bring that actress back every time you can.
She was my favorite of all The Doctor's companions by a very long shot, and I had a schoolboy crush on her to boot. So sad she went at still a young age, Rip Elizabeth Sladen
The day someone forgets the Doctor is the day the Doctor looks back and doesn’t feel guilty. Maybe he’ll eventually forgive himself but I’m pretty sure that guilt will always be there. Even if the majority of his “misdoings” were not his fault he did have some like Gallifrey’s burning and nearly fracturing time because of saving Clara.

Rest in Peace, Liz. you were one of the absolute best! miss you like crazy!
Now this is what they call powerful writing by those who care about the show and its characters.

David Tennant was probably genuinely happy in the scenes with Elizabeth considering he was a big Doctor Who fan
Such beautiful scenes. At least he got to say goodbye before she passed away.
You missed the one with the 12th Doctor in "Under the Lake" when the Doctor was being anti-social and Clara pulled out cue-cards of prepared not-rude things for him to say, one of them read "I should have known you didn't live in Aberdeen."
"Did I do something wrong..?" *"AFFIRMATIVE."*
"who is the doctor?" "affirmative"
"Who is the Doctor? _"Affirmative."_ lmao
Thanks from your last video of redirecting me here and again tears are formed. Despite her being one of the fans favorite companion, for me it was Leela. She was feisty and had the doctors back. A warrior.
