When did the first brain show up on Earth?
Lisa Feldman Barrett is a distinguished psychologist and neuroscientist, renowned for her groundbreaking research on the nature of emotions. She is a University Distinguished Professor of Psychology at Northeastern University and holds appointments at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. Barrett's work challenges traditional views on emotions, proposing that they are not universal experiences but are constructed by the brain based on individual and cultural contexts. She is the author of the influential book "How Emotions Are Made: The Secret Life of the Brain," which has significantly impacted the fields of psychology and neuroscience. Barrett has received numerous accolades for her research, including the NIH Director's Pioneer Award, and she is an elected member of the Royal Society of Canada. Through her innovative research and engaging writing, Barrett continues to shape our understanding of the human mind and emotions.

Existence precedes essence. You exist before having any concept of who you are. You become who you are by making decisions, choices, and actions. Because we have no given purpose, we have to give one to ourselves. You decide what you value and what your passions are, that becomes the purpose of your life. The meaning of life is to be alive. The purpose of life is whatever you make of it. Because it is yours, and only you can make your decisions.

ok but how did it do anything deliberately. Where did the structures for deliberating anything come from. Why did they form. How can you segment brain functions into something which motivates a living thing to do something with intention.

This was a super general explanation. The science behind the development of incentive based primitive neurological structures, which helped super simple animals to prioritize resource gathering and avoid danger, is a fascinating read. It also helps answer the question you asked. Because the layers of what would develop into the brain function laymen recognize today as their personal psychological experience can be traced out from these beginnings pretty reliably. But it is dense material and way deeper (and nuanced) than even hard science fiction or commonly talked about interviews like this one can even touch.

I am an Evolutionary Biologist. This lady has no clue about evolution. Predators did not evolve first among the vertebrates but among the arthropods, much earlier. Amphioxus does have a brain but is nowhere similar to an ancestral brain, full stop. If she had done some due diligence she would have realized that bilaterian brains are already very sophisticated. So why is she talking about any of this without a proper phylogenetic (and cladistic) context? This does the rigorous research about the evolutionary origins of brains and cognition a huge disservice.

Well. ThATS one theoRy. based on Speculative Science. ("best guess at the moment". Remember when we first thought the Earth was flat? And that the sun orbited the earth?) It is more logical and likely that God created the Universe and all the kinds of living things on the earth.
Does the Amphioxus had a nervous system, at least a nerve?
So it didn’t have to do with the brain first developing to guide the movement of tunicate larva? Fascinating. Tell us more about these facts you know.

We make aspects of evolution do the most ridiculous things.
What's crazy to me is that dinosaurs got along fine for millions of years without building cities. Animals like us seem to have been a rare accident.
I said it was a plant not an animal that was eaten intentionally
Who can make decisions about their individual life and future existence and survival of the species without having a brain yet? Personally I think the worm-like creatures must have devolved. They were off to such a good start.
Imagine being the first creature with a brain 😂😭 then imagine being the first T REX. You were the king.
Darwin showed that some are devolving with out brains .
So we have brains because of war.
The first brain hasn't arrived yet.
Didn’t realize it had yet

So why are there still amphioxus without brains? The evolutionary theory has so many holes and gaps I’m surprised people still trying to sustain it. What we should look for is other explanations, I don’t know what, but something is missing in our understanding of how we ‘evolved’ or rather came to be/exist

I agree, despite the typo. But it seems simpler that basic nervous systems and perception naturally became more complex over time, probably via basic conditioning (this = danger, that = food, etc.).

Thanks for this content that was being repeated thrice in a single video. You have to know that an illogical one cannot be fed deeper even it recurred for a million times. The reason is we are humans with a neurologically structured brain designed by the God. No more exolanations sound logical.
