Nice topic. I guess I lean towards the year change from 69 to 70 a lot here. But if you look at all of the other Age changes they are marked more by specific titles. I'm good either way. All the books mentioned are great milestone markers though.

For me Claremont and Byrne were the most influential bronze age pairing

I hear you, but I’m not sure they do what they do without O’Neil and Adams coming first. Adams was a huge influence on Byrne.

Hi, Jim. Yes, this is the video for me. I started reading comics in 1974 (I suspect you began reading around the same time), so this is certainly my fave era. However, thanks to reprint titles like Marvel Tales, Marvel's Greatest comics and any number of DC reprint titles (Super-team Family, Four-Star Spectacular), I was also reading Silver Age stories, which primed me perfectly for the late 70s when I discovered that comic shops existed, and started buying Silver-Age stuff. I grew up reading both eras. I always assumed Bronze Age began either in 1970 or 1971. I hadn't realized that there were so many comics that fans adopted as milestones to mark the shift from Silver to Bronze, though I guess it makes sense thematically. I'm totally fine with accepting 1970 as the first year of the Bronze Age. Similarly, I would think of 1980 as the first Copper Age year and 1990 as the first FOIL Age year. Do we have an age for the 2000s yet?

An excellent analysis of the beginnings of the Bronze Age of comics Jim. It certainly makes for interesting discussion! I think a fair point for the end of the Bronze Age is the emergence of the direct market (conveniently) around 1980/81. No one particular book, but a movement of much higher sales at specialty stores versus newsstands. Interestingly, Moon Knight was one the first titles that went direct only for Marvel, which made the first direct issue somewhat more expensive at that time (but not anymore). The birth and growth of local comic book stores I think is a great start to the 'Modern' era, or whatever they're calling in now 😁

I think you are absolutely spot-on here. My knowledge is much more limited, but it makes sense to start with O'Neil/Adams on Batman, and on Conan for Marvel - and the ending of the Lee/Kirby run on FF. Different, more "mature" stories - as you say, the beginnings of the horror titles for both companies, and the sword and sorcery genre in Marvel, and different art styles epitomized by the more fluid Adams and Windsor-Smith drawings as opposed to the brute-strength dynamism of Kirby. Of course there's never a clean, simple ending and beginning to these things - there were still SA-style comics being published in 70-71-72, but your argument makes it clear that something was in the air, changing things fairly quickly.

Interesting topic Jim and the source of endless discussion at any given LCS. I'm more of a transition kind of guy when it comes to the start of the Bronze Age - acknowledging that 1970-71 was a milestone period for comics, I know there were already hints of these changes in the mid-60s with, for example, Wally Wood's T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents and his Cannon graphic novel.

I don't know why Detective 225 gets overlooked as the beginning of the Silver Age. While Martian Manhunter is a backup story and does not appear on any cover he is a truly new character. And he is the founding member of the Justice League. I agree that Conan 1 and GL76 are the start of the Bronze Age but did not realize that Lee/Kirby partnership ended with FF102

For me, I still consider the 20 cent cover price the end of the Siver age. When they went to the 25 cent cover price they made the comics a little smaller so the 20 cent comics will not fit in current age bags. They’re too big. Check it out.

Actually, the early 25-cent comics will not fit in current bags either. Current bags will fit books from the last quarter of 1975 and up. Try it out.

Jim, I think your analysis is brilliant. I've always considered Conan #1 to be the start of the Bronze Age. It was released in 1970 and was the first appearance of a new character to comics that would go on to be extremely popular in the 70's. The fact that the Lee/Kirby partnership dissolved when Kirby ended his run on FF and SS ceased publication just the month before, beautifully marks the end of an era, namely, the Silver Age of Comics. What better way to mark the end of this period? With Conan 1 coming out the very next month fits perfectly as the start of the Bronze Age right down to the month. I believe you've absolutely nailed this one and the entire comic industry should adopt this officially. Great stuff! I look forward to your ideas on what marks the end of the Bronze Age.

I always think of the bronze age of comics as starting in 1970, but not due to any specific title by Marvel or DC, or any specific creative team
