When did humans start getting divorced? - Rod Phillips

Dig into the complicated history of divorce- from the earliest known divorce laws in ancient Mesopotamia to modern day.
--
Formally or informally, human societies across place and time have made rules to bind and dissolve couples. The stakes of who can obtain a divorce, and why, have always been high. Divorce is a battlefield for some of society’s most urgent issues, including the roles of church and state, individual rights, and women’s rights. Rod Phillips digs into the complicated history of divorce.

They will avoid the cheater at all cause. -If the marriage is dysfunctional they neither blame the husband or the wife but mostly side with the wife. -Cheaters will be imprisoned well there you have it folks

    The Catholic Church has something called annulment which states that the marriage wasn’t valid from the beginning. That’s their form of divorce

  • @Gr95dc

    Yeah but is extremely difficult to get it. The freaking pope has to approve it

  • @raphaelledesma9393

    @raphaelledesma9393

    3 жыл бұрын

    As you noted, an annulment isn’t a divorce since it doesn’t dissolve a valid marriage; it recognizes that due to certain factors, a marriage was not valid in the first place. It merely recognizes that there was no true marriage. As you can imagine, the process for granting it is more tedious and tougher since theoretically the diocesan tribunal/court has to discuss if there were valid grounds for not considering the marriage valid. Before Pope Francis’s reforms, there used to be 2 trials required. If both were not in agreement, then it needed to go to Rome. Among others, his reforms included only one trial needed to determine nullity. Also, it depends on the country. The United States is notable for example for having a larger proportion of annulments approved compared to the rest of the world.

    In a relationship, don't focusing on avoiding fights, because you'll fail, and the longer you suppress it, the more explosive it will be. Instead, fight when you need to, and take every fight as an opportunity to learn the real skill: making up again / apologising / compromising. Every fight that doesn't end this way, weakens your marriage. Every fight that does, strengthens it.

Divorce is like trying breaking a phone contract because all you need is a cheap pay as you go plan (your current carrier doesn't have) so you can spend the money on other things.

  • @gingerhoof2157

    @gingerhoof2157

    I’m sorry for being late to the party, but that basically was a very diluted social gathering for middle to upper classes. You get to show off your new dress, you see other people, have a quick chat, etc. But you’re also not bound to spending your whole walk with those people as you can politely walk away to do other stuff. So basically going on a promenade counted as being social (and not attending any gatherings was considered weird) but you also get fresh air.

    Sadly, this video wasn't nearly at the level of depth that TED Ed videos are known for. It's really simplistic in the way that it talks about Islamic law on divorce, for example. (You can't just cite the Qur'anic verses on the subject, since that's only one of the many components that create the diverse opinions on divorce)

    Fun fact: in Islam married women can in fact divorce their husbands (indirectly) through a process called khul' (usually initiated in court). The downside to this process as opposed to having the husband divorce his wife, is that the wife will have to return/pay back her "dowry" which is a gift from the husband, most often a large sum of money or traditionally gold jewelry
