When Couples Go Backpacking | Gear Load Out

It's been over 6 years since my wife, Katie and I have been on a backpacking trip together. Katie made a goal to summit Kings Peak (Utah's tallest peak) this year and we finally planned a weekend to make it happen. The route to Kings Peak is 28 miles round trip. 7.5 Miles the first day, 13 for summit day, and then 7.5 miles back to the car. Here we show you the gear we are taking as a couple and how we planned for this trip.

For water filtration with multiple people we have found that the Platypus gravity system has been life changing. My boyfriend and I are always together when backpacking and we use Camelbaks (after I got dehydrated forgetting to drink from bottles). The gravity system allows us to filter water while we take a break and doesn't require any action really on our part. It's also awesome for camp. One fill is enough to top off the Camelbak's fill a smart water for juice and then have water for cooking dinner. There have been times where the water source is far away or we don't want to have to revisit it before taking off the next morning so we will fill the dirty bag, filter it, and then fill it again and walk it back to camp to use the next morning. It just makes life sooooo much easier and makes water filtration a no brainer. MORE than worth the little bit of extra weight! We will never backpack without it! (solo hiking would be a different story, but for more than 1 person I can't recommend it enough)

Hey! thankyou for this vid, my wife and I are thinking about doing some simple backpacking hols next year in the UK. One question though, is a 2 man tent big enough for comfort when sleeping? I'm assuming that because your tent has vestibules on both sides it eliminates the need to store items inside the tent.

Love this so much. Couples planning videos and write-ups are pretty sparse. You’d get my vote for a mini series on the whole planning and execution of a couples trip (including how to stay on the same page for what each other’s objectives and comfort levels are). FYI, that GSI cup fits wonderfully in the 700ml pot (I have the same setup). It’s 1.25oz or 35g. : )

Backcountry Exposure Awesome. Yeah, I think it’s really important for those of us who are way into all of this to be thoughtful and understand their perspectives. Oftentimes we’re probably just trying to project our own perspectives onto them rather than helping them achieve what they’re hoping to get out of it.

Now that you've gone on your trip, is there anything you would change? I see alot of couples sharing 2 person sleep systems over single person sleep systems. Not how we do it. I don't split kit. That gas is useless without the stove and vise versa. Same with the tent. Neither of you could carry both bags but if something happens to one of you, you're both in trouble. I would keep gear altogether. You can carry the whole tent and your wife could carry the whole stove. Obviously you can split what you carry but there's two ways to do it.

Once you get into the mindset of taking only the things you truly use and need, it's easier to weed out all the xtras and fit into smaller volume. Experience and packing/repacking a few hundred times will show you how to maximize that volume.
