It's astounding to find out that Peter Falk was NOT the first choice to play Columbo. When the character was originally created the writers envisioned another actor to play the part. He turned them down because he was in semi-retirement and he felt that committing to a show like Columbo would interfere with his golf game. If he had said yes, Columbo would have been played by Bing Crosby!

This is still my favourite episode from the early series. The way in which each scene is set and played out. It is almost like watching a stage play. Especially the house scenes. All the actors are perfect, with Lee Grant and Patricia Mattick almost chewing the set with their melodramatic performances. It is a delight to watch and I could literally watch this episode again and again. The music is also wonderful. There is so much detail in every scene. The background music in the airport bar, that slowly becomes the closing title theme. The cinematography in the early episodes always stood out too. Needless to say, I have the whole box set of the series on DVD.

"Ransom for a Dead Man" played a vital role in reviving Lee Grant's career, which had been stalled by Hollywood for many years. This film (and it is more of a film than merely an episode, much like "Prescription: Murder" was a film) gave Lee Grant the opportunity to reinvent herself as an actress, proving to all doubters in the Hollywood community that she still "had it." Within only about 4 years, Lee would go on to win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in the film "Shampoo" (1975), starring Warren Beatty and written by Robert Towne (who earlier was a "script doctor" for the classic picture, "The Godfather," and the writer for another class picture, "Chinatown"). Lee is approximately 94 years old.

Seing this reminds me of Lee Grant as the victim's widow in 'In the heat of the night'. I've watched this movie numerous times over here in Germany, dubbed, so I don't know the original dialogue. Retranslating it Lee Grant tells the local notables "I'll leave you to yourself", in case Virgil Tibbs, a homicide inspector of African American descent, isn't allowed to investigate the murder of her husband, who was about to build a new factory in Sparta with lots of economic benefits for the town. That's one chilly scene if I ever saw one, and a highly recommended movie.

Excellent spotting! Yep: floor marking. Checked the next shot where Pattye Mattick moves along the optical axis and it could have been a second camera rolling just outside the frame on the left. The continuity is perfect. So I'd say the marking was for both: blocking (staying clear of the chair) for the wide shot - and focus for the tight medium shot.
