When Christian McBride met his hero James Brown, this is what happened

The eight-time Grammy-winner sat down with Tom Power to talk about his career and why he wanted to write a suite for four civil rights legends: Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali and Rosa Parks.

It's such a pleasure to listen to Tom Power conduct an interview! And Christian McBride is T.H.E. Man -- what a bass player! ❤

Such a wonderful interview! My favourite part of every Tom Power interview is when the subject says, “Wow! You’re really good!” 😁 I was fortunate to have seen Mr. McBride’s incredible concert that evening. It will stay with me forever.

Wow. Love this interview. I know nothing of jazz or Mr. McBride but listened to this interview at breakfast and came here to see it in person. Lovely conversation. Thank you Tom.

I love jazz, but haven't listened for a while. I know that's like an oxymoron, but I've been busy with other things. I found this interview on my car radio... and didn't want it to end! In fact, I stayed in my car to hear it out. Thank you SO much. I'll be back in touch soon... with my music... thanks to this fun convo! 🤩

I would love to ask Christian McBride what he thinks of Mingus and his music and the connection to James Brown and his music. When I listen to “Better get it in your soul” I hear the predominant rhythm coming from the trombone, the saxes, and the piano - particularly underlying the solos. And I wonder if Brown was influenced in any way by Mingus. “Every instrument is a drum”

Sublime musician. Loved his work on Sting’s All This Time live album/ concert at Ill Pallagio, on 9/11 as it turned out.
