LOVE spaghetti squash! I harvest mine exactly the same way. I've got an old fridge in my shop as my "root cellar". At the highest temp setting it's 48-50 degrees, so it works great for squash, cabbage, etc. Side note for long term storage, it's a good idea to do a weekly inspection...move things around & check for any soft spots or signs of rot. It's surprising how fast rot or mold can sneak up & bite you in the butt.

Great video!! Thank you so much for this information. We’re in our 2nd year of gardening and composting. We added the first compost to our gardening boxes and lo and behold we had a couple little volunteer spaghetti squash plants growing in the early spring. We left them alone thinking they were cucumbers from the the last year. Imagine our surprise when they turned out to be Spaghetti squash when we had never planted that, lol!! The seeds from my store-bought spaghetti squash from the compost bin grew!! It’s only mid June and we already have one spaghetti squash that is nearly the size of those at the store! After watching your video we now know when to harvest. Thanks again!!❤

Someone gave me a whole bunch of them last fall but I couldn't eat all of them before a few started going bad before I could eat them, so I threw them out in an area where I wanted to extend my garden... I figured that they would decompose and turn into compost, but they started to grow there this past spring, so now I have millions of them, but I have never tried to grow them before . They are getting so big!! I was tempted to eat one but clearly they are not ready. There's a bunch of other squash that were given to me growing too... it's really fun growing them and I can't wait to eat them. The storage tips are great because I sure have lots of them!

Rick Greatly appreciated, like you I'm a huge fan of spaghetti squash. Having spent the last 20yrs in the US, now after 42 yrs away I've just returned to the UK, where spaghetti squash is as good as unknown, but I mananaged to find seeds . Germinating 10 plants. I chose mainly because of space to grow them on a trellis. Subsequently I have 9 squash of various sizes 3 are presently ripening off the vine as the shrivelled up the other 6 which are smaller are still on the vine s which haven't dried out YET...lol I read elsewhere that when storing they should be uprighted. Thanks for the info! This is my first year growing them and I had no idea when to pick them because I had gotten the seeds out of a store bought squash last year so I had no harvesting information haha. So far mine are still a white-ish color so apparently I have some time to go ;)

I'm growing these this year on my tower gardens lol which has produced huge fruit but I don't know we will get enough sun in GA for Oct. to ripen them .... I might have to cut and leave inside in the sun and see if I can ripen them further.

Ours a still a light yellow/ green. I’m nervous because we’re dipping into the 40’s next week in the evenings. The leaves are completely covered in mold. We had a really wildly muggy summer we could not keep up with the mold outbreak. I’m hoping they start to turn yellow soon!! Very informative video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

@@StoneyAcresGardening I just make a traditional miso soup with firm tofu added along with the squash cubed and also I have a load of Swiss chard and I generally add some of that or spinach to make it even healthier. I do use both miso paste and dashi granules. Also wonderful if you are eating a low-carb or vegetarian diet.

Thank you for the information on spaghetti squash! I’ve got them growing out of my compost pile. They should be good to eat, right? Also, couldn’t help noticing the stone wall behind you. Beautiful! I’m sure the cost was a small fortune!

Thanks, we do like the wall. Fortunately we didn't have to pay for it. A commercial business moved into the horse pasture behind our place. The city made them put up that wall as a privacy and sound barrier.

No, we had a commercial development move into the old horse pasture behind us. The city made them put it up for privacy. It's actually not brick, it's a concrete sound wall, but they did a nice job of painting it.

"Seed packet"? My seed packet was the spaghetti squash we bought from the local produce stand! 😂 After many failed attempts to germinate seeds, we cut one open that had seeds that were already sprouting! Those have now become the five or so vines that are completely overtaking half my garden. 😁 Don't forget to harvest those male flowers every morning and fry them up while you wait for the gourds to mature. 😋 Surf Wisely.

We have a freeze coming my squash are not ready can I cut the vine and bring all In from the rain and cold weather.

I have 7 spaghetti squash plants grow up wild in my yard this spring, all have at least one squash on them, some two or three, it is 30 Sep 22. I need other ways of telling when they are ripe to pick.

When should you harvest when the leaves and vines start to die? Do you leave them ? or Pick them to ripen off the vine?

My first time planting spaghetti squash and it looks like that’s all I’m going to get this summer. It is the beginning of July and mine are starting to look close to ready so can I just leave them all summer. Probably won’t get a frost till October or November since I’m in Alabama. Thinking of getting a mini fridge to store them all winter.

They will over ripen if you leave them all summer.

I would bring it in and put in in a sunny window and see if it will ripen. It really depends on how far along in the process it made it before it broke off.

Great video. I noticed that some of your vines have died off or are starting to die off. Maybe a vine bore got to them. Will the squash that was attached to those vines be able to continue to ripen if they are like your green one? What if they are yellow but not that bright yellow with the hard skin? The reason I ask is because I have two pumpkins that are more orange than green but on one the vine died and on the other, I accidently cut the vine before the pumpkin was completely ripe. I look forward to reading your reply

As the season moves along vines start to die off. We don't have vine bore in our area. But I have seen a few squash bugs. But it's so late in the year for us that I'm not going to worry much. We might have frost this week so we could loose them all this week. If you bring those unripe fruit in side and keep them in a sunny window they should ripen up just fine.

Which is better? To cure or leave them on the vine? Because I can’t cure them at those high heats if I leave them. Thanks!!

It's always better to let them ripen on the vine if at all possible. The only time I ripen them off the vine is when they aren't ripe and we have frost coming.

If you are going to eat a harvested one within a few days, do you still have to let then cure for 10-14 days? Thanks for all the information.

Nope, you can eat them straight out of the garden if you would like. The curing is just if you plan to store them log term.

Can you date them to know which to use first or is that totally unimportant! This is my first time erev growing them, so lot's questions. The seeds were a precious gift. Your videos are so helpful.

Glad it helped. Sure you could put a little sticker on them with a date if you like. But as long as you get them eaten up in 3 or 4 months it really won't matter.

I've never had green ones ripen, but if they have turned white they should still ripen up. Bring them inside and put them in a sunny window

This is the first time I have grown these and I harvested four too early. They are ivory white. They've been like that for a month. Only one had a slight color change. How can I ripped them?

This late in the season I wouldn't worry about it. You plants will die from the frost soon any way. If you are looking for an organic solution you can treat with a mix of milk and water, but this is a prevention not a cure, so you need to do it every couple of weeks BEFORE you have powdery mildew.

I planted a few but it was a bit late in the season. I doubt they will be ripe before frost. Can I still eat them ?

Just before the frost, bring them in and keep them in a warm sunny window and they will ripen up.

Curing is if you plan on storing them. But you can eat them straight out of the garden.

You could try it, but I honestly have no idea, not something I have tried before.

When you put your fingernail through the skin, doesn't that injure, or damage it for the future? Or is it early enough to where it heals itself?

Yes, that's overkill for squash, they would be okay in the 40s and 50s and fridges are usually in the high 30s.

I grow butternut and spaghetti squash but lately my squash is getting killed by white mildew on leaves. It gets very humid here in Ohio, probably that's why I have that problem.

Milk and water mixture can help with that. I've been spraying mine but it can really get out of hand quickly. Snip off some of the powder leaves and spray the rest when it's sunny out.

The hard part is cutting that bastard in half to bake in the oven..

Don’t cut them in half before putting them in the oven. Poke a few holes with a knife in the top. It cuts much easier after cooking.

We cut ours in half, remove all the seeds (save the seeds for next year to grow more) fill the squash up with mozzarella cheese then cover the cheese with lots of spinach leaves & wrap the whole thing up. We grill ours on the grill outside with chicken or steak for 45 minutes. Yummy 😋 we love them this way. Hope everyone will give this try. You won't regret it!

They start out a greenish white for me too and then ripen to yellow. But you may be dealing with a different variety than mine as well.

@@StoneyAcresGardening I’m in Alabama )….about 30 miles north of bham… I wish I could share a pic here….its about the size of a cantaloupe…..very pale yellow…all I can say is ….lesson learned !! I’m a newbi at the age of 58 with gardening ….definitely trial and error…lots of errors 🤦‍♀️🤪 Thanks for the tip…hopefully that “might” work 🙏🏻
