This is a common fallacy. India did make up a larger PROPORTION of the world economy before colonialism, and then that proportion suddenly shrank, but the economy itself actually grew. The proportion did not fall because the economy shrank; it's because Europe and Japan industrialised and so grew to make up a larger proportion of the world economy.

Looting of wealth barely took place, and the Empire was a demonstrable cost for Britain; it made us poorer, in fact the British economy started doing better after they gave India independence - owning colonies is a burden, empire is folly. The $45 trillion is a complete myth. India may or may not have industrialised eventually, but it certainly would have taken much longer if it weren't for Britain. Under the Raj, India saw huge increases in textile and steel production, land under irrigation, increased literacy, Western medicine, infrastructure etc. Nowhere did I say this justified colonisation, I think it was a mistake and Britain should never have got involved. Don't strawman. I'm just saying you need to actually read the history and economic data before you make sweeping and inaccurate generalisations. There's a comment I left elsewhere under this video going into more detail about the inaccuracy of a lot of claims people make.

I am Native American and our people have been fighting colonialism since day one, trying to regain our identity and Indigenous culture. We are capable of leading and maintaining our own affairs. Colonialism says that we must be dependent on Europeans. Until colonialism is eradicated, colonized countries will always remain enslaved.

The reason why India is still poor is because they are still blaming Britishers for their own post-colonial failure. If Britishers are the reason why many countries are poorer then why non colonized countries like Nepal, Bhutan, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Liberia etc. are poorer than India? Why many colonized countries like America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand are one of the richest countries in the world. India had 23% of world's GDP in 1750s only because it had 25% of world's population at that period. Countries like Britain, Netherland had 3 times the per capita of India even at that time. Looking at the per-capita, India was one of the poorest countries in the world even in 1750s. Most of the east Asian countries, Middle eastern countries, European countries had more per-capita than India in 18th century. Saying India was one of the richest countries in 17th century just because it had large share of GDP in the world is like saying at present India is richer than UK because India had more GDP than UK. We have to look at per-capita income to find which country is richer and which is not. Countries like Singapore, Hong Kong had accepted British colonization brought more positives than negatives to them. Singapore’s first prime minister, Lee Kuan Yew, said that before the British arrived, “there was no organized human society in Singapore, unless a fishing village can be called a society”. Countries like Singapore are richer than India now because they had honest politicians like Lee Kuan Yew who don't unnecessarily blame Britishers and had the courage to accept the fact that colonialism brought more positives than negatives to them unlike Indian politicians.

How can we even forget for what they did to India.They were the reason of the partition of India and because of that we had so many wars after partition. And wars never bring profit. Countries like Japan, Germany were far behind India in terms of total GDP (PPP) in 1950s.Look at where they are now. The per-capita income of India in 1950s were at 500 $ and that of US were at 10,000 $(almost 20 times the per-capita income of India). The present per-capita income of India is at 2000$ and that of US is at 60,000 $(almost 30 times the per-capita income of India). Look at the images of Kolkata, Bombay (Mumbai) in 1950s and compare it to the present. Partition was not caused because of Britishers. Partition would have easily avoided when Indian leaders accepted Cabinet Mission Plan.

Per usual non-Westerners like to point an accusatory finger at the West without support for their blame. As Jeanette Wee accurately writes India wasn't made poor by the British but by their own failure to simply adjust to their situation. That new situation was that industrial production, mass production, was rendering at the time Indian methods of production obsolete at a staggering rate. High prices due to low production yields could no longer keep the Indian textile industry afloat. Neither would expensive cloth help the Indian weavers to remain attractive to buyers. This has been woven into the myth of British soldiers breaking the fingers of Indian weavers so they could not use handlooms. Often presented alongside the accusation of over-taxation, forcing weavers to sell at set prices and etc. India produced 25% of the world's textiles in the 17th century and was producing less than 2% in 1947. This isn't shocking to anyone that have read the export and import manifestos and saw that alongside this steady decline, the actual percentage of the world's textile production that was done in India stood for more volume per percentage compared to previous production percentages. So 1% of textile production in 1856 represented more rolls of textiles, more clothes, and more anything compared to the 1% produced in 1788. This is especially true for cotton production, the absolute majority of which remained in India for Indian use. Then the claim that the British didn't do anything to educate the Indians is one of the most bizarre claims non-Westerners heap upon the British and Europeans in general. The British did educate Indians, in fact, they invested an increasingly growing budget throughout the decades to ensure that Indians could read, write and do calculus. Then they invested more to teach professions to Indians. The very fact that the British invested ANYTHING to educate foreign people without benefiting the British population in any tangible way - tangible as in making an impact in their daily lives - is nearly historically unique to the British empire and Europeans as a whole. If the British hadn't educated the Indians by introducing them to a new form of mass education they would in fact have acted in accordance with any colonial empire that colonized India or other regions across the globe.

The reason why India is still poor is because they are still blaming Britishers for their own post-colonial failure. If Britishers are the reason why many countries are poorer then why non colonized countries like Nepal, Bhutan, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Liberia etc. are poorer than India? Why many colonized countries like America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand are one of the richest countries in the world. India had 23% of world's GDP in 1750s only because it had 25% of world's population at that period. Countries like Britain, Netherland had 3 times the per capita of India even at that time. Looking at the per-capita, India was one of the poorest countries in the world even in 1750s. Most of the east Asian countries, Middle eastern countries, European countries had more per-capita than India in 18th century. Saying India was one of the richest countries in 17th century just because it had large share of GDP in the world is like saying at present India is richer than UK because India had more GDP than UK. We have to look at per-capita income to find which country is richer and which is not. Countries like Singapore, Hong Kong had accepted British colonization brought more positives than negatives to them. Singapore’s first prime minister, Lee Kuan Yew, said that before the British arrived, “there was no organized human society in Singapore, unless a fishing village can be called a society”. Countries like Singapore are richer than India now because they had honest politicians like Lee Kuan Yew who don't unnecessarily blame Britishers and had the courage to accept the fact that colonialism brought more positives than negatives to them unlike Indian politicians.

@@humdidoadi Nothing compared to what China has done to its neighbors, and the people whom they are subjugating to this day; the Tibetans, the Manchu, the Uighurs etc. And nothing compared to what has been done to India by the muslim and mongol invaders. The scars of the muslim invasion can still be seen on the Indian subcontinent (they are called Pakistan and Bangladesh). Like all countries that were colonies of western countries in the past, the USA was also a colony.... USA, like all colonies of that time, has become independent and has developed itself into the most powerfull country in the world... "world power". USA is an example for those who keep using the past as an excuse for their social and economic backwardness of their country. Just a leadership problem deliberately set aside for this pointless excuse. And these countries still look down on USA as a white state.... Since USA has had a black President, we can proudly say that USA belongs to the blacks too. As a Torres Strait islanders I was young when we went from hunting and gathering food to CDEP (work for the sole) where we were disconnected from the sea and saw our people's decline in health because we got more dependent on the sugar foods in the shops. The way Colonization killed our way of life still hard to escape....Now trapped under a constitution which does not acknowledge fully first nations right to acquire their rightful lands which they have taken care of. Governments now give land back to first nation people as National Parks which is still land owned by the government. I only wish we had guns back in the day to keep them out 😔

Europe had way high per-capita (as per Angus Maddison figure)than rest of the world even in 1500s long way before colonialism started. Most of the richest countries in Europe like Scandinavia, Switzerland barely took part in colonialism. Major colonial powers like Spain and Portugal were poorer than other European countries during their period of imperialism. Colonization was a result of the industrial revolution not the reverse.

Many people think like him, but very few of them dare speak like him.

Like all countries that were colonies of western countries in the past, the USA was also a colony.... USA, like all colonies of that time, has become independent and has developed itself into the most powerfull country in the world... "world power". USA is an example for those who keep using the past as an excuse for their social and economic backwardness of their country. Just a leadership problem deliberately set aside for this pointless excuse. And these countries still look down on USA as a white state.... Since USA has had a black President, we can proudly say that USA belongs to the blacks too. My advice to third world countries is to choose the best leaders in the next free and general elections in their country, who can better develop their country financially and economically.

The complexities of the geography labelled India are far more intricate, ancient and advanced compared to the USA, which is a younger land fir invader populated only with native Americans. The arab invaders used to call everyone beyond Sindh river and province as Hindu, the english cannot pronounce that so they started calling us indu and then it became indiya. The westerners completely destroyed Vietnam, Thailand, Combodia, Laos...and its local culture slowly replacing it with western ideas based on christian beliefs. The colonizers brought nothing but unrest, misery, disease, hunger, poverty and exploitation to our lands. Inspite of diversity in bilefs our cultures survived and prospered for thousands of years. They sowed the seeds of intolerance and racism in us to rule us. Now our minds have rotted and we continue to fight amongst each other for political or cultural differences. 🪔👌🙏✊🪔

Hey, the figure of 45 trillion dollars was calculated by a Marxist economist named UTSA Patnaik from UTSA, using a flawed methodology of compounding the loot taken by the Britishers with a 5% interest rate. There is also a story that Shivakar Talpade invented the airplane 8 years before the Wright Brothers, but that the British stole his idea and gave it to the Wright Brothers. I never thought of it like that. As an Indian, I am still trying to consume less and trying to make my carbon footprint smaller. But like everything else, this movement too is catered to the western audience and unknowingly, middle and upper social classes in these developing countries are developing the same mindset. And you are still doing the right thing. See, what he said is 100% true and west is very much hypocrite for this but that being said reducing carbon emissions is for ones own betterment esp in small things like not using car for small distances, following the 4R's etc. Ultimately it returns to us only. Pointing colonisation is a good point in debates or reasoning to why developing countries is plagued with crime, pollution and poverty but at the end if u make even a little impact on saving pollution and reducing carbon footprint, it comes back to you. I am sure sir in this video would never want anyone to increase the carbon footprint. All he wanted to say is that west blaming carbon footprint rise in third world countries is nonsense as they were the one who used it carelessly before, developed at skyrocket speed and then blame us for our development like theirs. I hope you get what I am trying to say.

He must be congratulated for having the courage to state the facts as they are.When it comes to the points he raised about the behaviour of " the West ", what else can we say then : Guilty as charged ! Not wanting to side track the issues raised here, or indeed Vijay himself - would he ( or has he ) have the courage to speak up against what is happening to Indian society, particularly the religious aspect of it and what role the BJP is playing in all of it. For the sake of India - would he be able to suggest a remedy, a remedy that is acceptable to India and Indian society - before it is too late?
