When A Rookie Sidney Crosby Got ‘Bullied’ in the NHL

Спорт

#nhl #hockey #pittsburghpenguins
Before Connor McDavid, Auston Matthews, and Nathan Mackinnon were targeted in the NHL.. Sidney Crosby was the shining example of getting extra attention. In this video, we break down a moment where Crosby proved to the league (especially the Philadelphia Flyers) that he would not be intimidated.

ignorant, most superstars were abused their whole career prior to sid joining the game. One can argue Gretzky wasn't abused very much, but just look at all the shit Lemieux played through 15 years prior.... Sid got the nickname crybaby crosby because he felt entitled to being treated differently from day 1 of his career. talented player sure, but stop looking at the refs and play smarter hockey and throw your body around if you get mad.

I guess you could say that, but then you have players who were or are over protected ala Wayne Gretzky, Connor McDavid, and Auston Matthews (the latter who I love). Although, Gretzky admitted he had to be skilled because he wasn't the biggest guy. Just because you're a generational talent doesn't mean you have to be 100 percent protected nor does that mean you have to be dirty or fight. Learning how to defend yourself at times is a good skill to have.

Crosby still the best after the Wayne and Mario days. He just gets it done and shows up in all the big games. Ovechkin is a goal scoring machine and such a physical package, McDavid is some kind of out of this world talent with the things he can do and how fast he does it but Crosby just finds a way to help his team win when it counts more so than any of them. OV came through with a Cup and McDavid is knocking on the door but to captain 3 Cups and 2 Olympic Golds with a target on his back and the spotlight on him every night, Man, what a player.

Yea I gotta be honest, as a die hard, Red Wings fan who grew up just old enough to watch and appreciate the 90s run and the 02/08 cup wins (one of those being against Crosby) we called him Crybaby Crosby as well. But he earned my respect pretty fast. To be honest, after they beat us in 09 when we were trying to do another back to back, that’s when he earned my respect. He was hated by a lot of old school players who ended up having to respect him as well. And you know you’re good if you can pull that off. I don’t want them to creep up on us for that wild card spot but I also would instantly start watching the Penguins over every other team if they made it to the playoffs. Syd getting one more Cup off a bad start to a season and a wild card playoff start would be incredible. I wanna see him and Malkin hold that Cup up. I mean technically it did shorten Crosby's career. Not as significantly as Mario's, but he basically missed a season and a half of games right in the prime of his career. Plus we were all robbed of what may have been one of the most impressive single-season performances when Crosby first went down. He was only halfway through the season and had already put up like 66 points including 30+ goals....he easily could've ended that season with close to 140 points and over 60 goals AND this was during an era in the NHL when scoring was nowhere near as easy as it is now. It wasn't quite a dead puck era, but for a single player to achieve a point/game avg back then was huge. Nowadays it's common for every team to have at least one player who can do this.

There are two types of players in the NHL. Those that can defend themselves, and those that bring enough to the team that they don’t need to be as gritty to get the job done. I wish he wasn’t as good (go caps) but if he was on another team he would have had plenty of guys protecting him.

Guy Lafleur displayed ultimate self-control about not griping to refs or letting on that cheap shots would distract him from doing what he was best at: winning! Another respected great player was Frank Mahovlich. Opponents learned that it was better to not 'wake him up' because when riled he would likely score a couple of goals.

Honestly, what i personally would like to see is a rookie superstar take some sick revenge (like perhaps leaping off the feet to board or an unexpected cross check to the teeth... maybe even a headbut), get suspended for three games, then come back and when playing yhe same team/playwr again, right off the face off, take another round of sick revenge. Double vengeance. Then serve out a six game suspension wkth the deal that when he gets back, the team will protect him and he'll drop the dirty shīt and get back to superstar play. Imagine this with Bedard. Honestly, it would be a massive controversy and be all over the headlines. The conversation would be started about how to protect finesse players and Betmann would have to at least pay attention. It could lead to a shift in the league and remove some of the cheap shots. Honestly, i think if Bedard did it amd then people like Crosby and McDavid had his back, there would have to be a change. At the very least, i think others would stopp taking overt liberties with Bedard. It doesn't matter how tough of a bully you are, the human weak spots are the same. Broken backs. Broken mouths. Noses. Concussions dont care about your height and weight. I would really just like to a season where there is some monumental push back and also if God woukd grant me one last gift, I'd like to see it result in the return of the enforcer... and with this sea change, also usher along a changing of the guard with Betmann moving on.

Look I'm biased b/c I'm from Pitt, but I always found it funny how so many opposing fans would complain about how the "league and refs favored Crosby." Really? This video is a prime example of just how much that wasn't the case. At least not early on in his career. I will admit that once guys like him and Ovi became veteran all-stars, THEN they would certainly get favorable call now and then, but that was par-for-the-course in the NHL with it's top players.

I am a bit on the fence about this one; long time Penguins fan remembering how the Pens (and maybe even the league) were saved by Sid (and Ovi). Sure, rookies with skills will get targetted, but the NHL hasn't learnt what the NFL unfortunately has: The general American public (you know, the ones advertisers care about) don't watch hockey for the Hatchers and the Laraques, they want the skills and the goals. You cannot lose your young skilled stars to injuries due to "unwritten rules".

They swing like a pendulum, from one extreme to another. I'm surprised that Marchand didn't get sent to the showers for his tie up with Bedard. And back in the day, the refs would grab the skilled guy, if he was fed up with the goon's BS. McCreary was notorious for pinning the skill guys arms at his sides, while the goon took another couple shots at his face.

I remember this... Crosby is one of the few players that earned his outrageous salary in this league. Since then? They don't fight like this boy had to. Cry-Baby? Oh he had plenty of reason to be outraged at the non-calls but particularly the wimps on his own team. Nobody had his back and that was BS. He could have split anytime to a better quality club. Over in my black and gold world, we don't call him cry baby, but "Prince glass jaw" lol! Alex ovechkin had a reason to respect and rival with Sid Hey younger fans, seriously-look at his early highlights. Don't let that new pretty dental work fool ya- this guy's a scrapper, one of the few players, during my original six career as a fan, that has earned every dime of what we considered at the time, his outrageous salary. Single players don't do it anymore-but he literally saved that franchise. Can't think of other players that did that... Pittsburgh owes Crosby everything.... Between revenues, taxes, jobs, hotels, sports bars. So far beyond his own Jersey sales, must've brought it in trillion$ to that area by now. The only reason to be a sports fan in Pittsburgh. Mad respect for Sidney. He's going to be one of the last that came up in that era. Massive changes during his career... He's kept up with it. Winter classic was fun and all, we're lucky that Malkin was two-tenths of a second behind... Bergie wants an Eastern conference final. 🐻

You can't discount all Lemieux did to save the team though. They needed Crosby on the team and for him to be such a loyal and generous star. But if Mario hadn't stepped in and arranged the purchase, plus come back and actually try and play with all of his ailments (just to boost ticket sales and hype) then the team would've been long gone.

He plays with a fearless edge and can not be bullied, he plays a man’s game and could have excelled in any era of hockey. That’s what separates ovechkin from every other superstar.

Officially, Sid’s lost year was due to concussion and soft tissue damage. Un-officially, my money is on that the Crosby camp told the NHL and the players association, that the current main draw in hockey will be fully recovered and will return to play only when there are guarantees that no one in the league could be subject to back to back hits like Crosby endured leading up to his time off. Voila, the department of player safety!

If that's the case, and I doubt it - I would have waved bye-bye to Sid's dive school, which is still open by the way. It appears to have merged with the Mike Ribeiro school of faking it - although not necessarily in Pittsburgh. And the DOPS is, more often than not an absolute joke. Although they've done well so far, 2 days into the season...
