When a Physicist Designs a Football Boot👨‍🔬⚽️

Спорт

This is what you happens when you ask a physicist to design a football boot. It’s absolutely genius - Inside the insole is 30 grams of tungsten powder. Adidas claimed this added 5% more power and 8% more swerve on the ball when striking. Sounds far fetched, I know, but this bizarre piece of tech is actually backed by science. Functionally, it works the exact same as a dead blow hammer. This tool is beloved by auto repairmen and carpenters alike because it doesn’t damage the object it’s striking, even when hit with great force. This is because, it’s filled with little bits of metal. When swinging the hammer, these pellet's slide to the back, then, as it makes contact, the pellet’s slam forward, preventing the hammer from bouncing back. This, in turn, results in a higher impact force, as it’s all concentrated in a single hit, rather than several bounces… Turns out, the biomechanics of striking a football are very similar. Foot goes back, so does the tungsten. As a player completes the striking motion, this powder shoots to the front of the boot, providing us with a rare example of sports technology that actually delivered on it’s promises… I guess

    Physics major here. Deadblow hammers don't hit harder. They are designed to disperse impulse over time, allowing you to be "gentler" on certain materials. Regular hammers hit harder. They transfer more momentum (because the hammer bounces backwards) in less time, which means greater peak force. This shoe is a gimmick. That amount of tungsten won't do anything significant to your kick.

    A 5% to 8% difference is rather major as far sports goes In a 20 people group,a 5% would be a 1 person And you would easily notice the difference between 19 vs 20 Small percent begin to be noticeable around the 2% and 3% mark (that little edge that is slightly crooked, that small akward feeling when steping on uneven surfaces etc) That 5% more power means the average distance kick goes from 3 metter to 3.15 (3 metters and 15 cm) Those 15 cms are basically a head or a hand of distance, and they make the difference between a goal and a goalkeeper block

    A deadblow hammer is literally designed to deliver less force. Part of caluculating force of impact is how long the objects are together thus how long it takes for the force to be transferred. If the hammer is staying put then the time of impact is longer thus the force is actually less.

  • @cheeseeygamer2997

    @cheeseeygamer2997

    The more I think of this the more useless this gimmick seems. Let's say you kick through the ball. That means the ball will leave your foot before the beads have a chance to move forward. Let's say you trap it with your foot coming to a stop on impact. Typically this is done with the side of your foot meaning the beads won't move on the correct direction. Even if you toe tap, the ball will probably leave your foot before the beads slam forward. Even then you tap the ball for control, not accuracy. It would've been more effective to use a solid piece of tungsten near the tip of the shoe. This wasn't created by a physicist, bur a marketing major.

    Mechanical engineer here: a dead blow hammer extends the collision impulse of a strike, which is useful for pushing material. The tungsten shot in the shoe serves not to extend the impulse but to add mass for greater momentum and thus greater momentum transfer into the ball. The reason it is shot and not a solid lump is to extend the impulse for the sake of the foot, not the ball; otherwise, it may do damage.

    When you factor in the time it takes for the tungsten mass to reach the object, you result in lesser force being applied to that object. Also, the energy from the tungsten would be transferred throughout the foot, not onto the object being struck. Just like a dead blow hammer.

    Can you post your sources? I can’t find the adidas claim of 5% more power and 8% more swerve anywhere, including Wikipedia. I’m skeptical of those findings as the motion of a hammer and the motion of the kick are different. A hammer moves basically straight up and down and so has time to shift the tungsten to the opposite side of impact. When you swing your foot for a long kick, the way your foot is pointed I believe all the tungsten is by your toes already and doesn’t have the ability to shift back. I wouldn’t be surprised if adidas claim is only for kicks where you don’t move your leg back first or something gimmicky like that.

    1 downside to hammer: it's intentionally made to bounce. When using a hammer, you use the excess force to allow your next upward swing to use less energy as it naturally comes back up. It's part of the technique which allows people the use of a hammer for much longer without tiring themselves out, and helps establish a rhythm. (Source: somebody who wacks metal with hammers way too much) As for the soccer shoe thing, it probably helps more than what people think it does, but less than what others think. It probably does have a slight bonus effect, around 1%, so neither the proclaimed 5%, nor what the comment section is saying (0.001% as an example)

    The difference is that the lead shot in a deadblow hammer is 50% of the weight, while the tungsten shot is 30/5000 of the foot and lower leg.😑🙄😒

    This reminds me of the old "hydro-sword" concept of putting water in a sword to swing out and add force, but fall down to rebalance the blade. A fantastic idea that has never been demonstrated effectively, thus blemishing the idea's reputation.

    The only thing that the tungsten would do, I think, is provide a greater inertia so that more of the force from the kick is carried through.

    we're not using a dead blow hammer to hit harder, we use it to minimize damage to whatever surface that we hit, you can find a basic fact like that on the internet but yet you didn't

    in American that’s .066 pounds which doesn’t sound like it would do much of anything regardless kinetic energy equals mass times velocity squared but increasing the mass would decrease The acceleration meaning a lower velocity resulting in and exponential lost in the amount of kinetic energy for every ounce increased.

    Deadblow hammers are for use in tight locations where you don't want it to rebound into another fragile part. The striking force time is delayed and the particles inside the hammer distributes the force of the strike so it feels "dead". It's even more gentle than a wooden mallet. An insole in the shoe is designed to alter the position of the foot and thus the angle striking the ball, and that is a very different and potentially beneficial alteration not related to the hammer story

    No you have that backwards. A fully elastic collision (ie bounces back) is the most efficient transfer of energy. Look it up. Plus think about the deadblow hammer. The lead shot doesn't come forward until after the hammer hits meaning it is actually a separate "hit" that only counteracts the bounceback of the hammer, not actually hitting the thing the hammer hit. Think about it like this, equal and opposite reaction, if your hammer bounces back with a certain amount of force, that was actually additional impact imparted on the thing you hit, because its going in the other direction. However thinking about what I said above, I am not sure how much the dead blow even decreases the impact of the deadbolt, as the shot limits the bounceback after it happens (soon after but still after) I bet dead blow hammers are more about limiting vibration and strain on the operator rather than the work piece.
