Be wary of the man with only one gun........ He has learnt how to shoot it

A friend of mine was visiting his long lost relatives in Europe and while in Belgium he stopped by a custom gunmaker. After looking at the beautiful showroom pieces he wondered aloud whether a custom gun was worth it considering the price. The man behind the counter gave an emphatic "yes" and said he'd prove it. He measured my friend up and consulted the records. He then brought out an unfinished double rifle being finished for a customer with nearly identical measurements. My friend said it pointed like an extension of his arm and the sights lined up effortlessly, instinctively.

I have to say. I've just gone from a fixed stock to a adjustable stock and I've gained a couple of targets and am managing a much more relaxed intuitive style of shooting. So fit definitely helps in my opinion. Now I've just got to get some sort of talent and I'll be ok.

I have a custom stock, has a good bit of cast and a monte carlo stock. Once I got my sigt picture and confidence in i have jumped from a 50% shooter to 80% within a couple of months. Still a few targets to work on but hopefully be knocking on the door of 90% before the end of the summer.

Sufficient evaluation can be devoted to most endeavors to seriously ruin the final outcome. Gun fit can be perfect and you can still miss every target without too much effort.

Most shooters here in the states pay little attention to gun fit. Oh, some skeet and clay competitors do, but in general it isn't thought of much. Most just buy a pump or auto loader off the shelf and they are done. Sometimes someone cuts a stock down for a shorter shooter. Obviously, it can make a large difference.

In the states you have so much freedom of choice when it comes to shooting, in the UK all you can really do is get a shotgun and shoot clays so it makes you focus on it more

its odd how on some stands one can hit them all but on others they just get away from you. As I get more confident, I adjust the stock less, in fact its now were I like it, at a good place to hit the average clay ...and so important that the shooting grounds move the traps regularly.

My brother is deadly on game birds with his Remington 870 Wingmaster. 14" LOP and dead straight stock - doesn't fit him at all. BUT, over the years and years of shooting 870's, he "makes it work" to borrow the gentleman's term!

I'm a big believer in most people can fit most guns well enough to be a good shot, 6'5 and above and under say 5'7, fairly overweight/bodybuilder etc also is where can be tricky to be consistent on an unfitted gun, gun feel comes with time, you can pick up a gun and know instantly if it feels all wrong or not

You said it. I’m a perfect example, 5’ 7” and 190 lbs. Been weightlifting for 30 years and have a very thick chest and shoulders. The LOP that fits best is around 13.5” with a high degree of pitch. For reference, that’s shorter than most stocks made for the ladies.

@@davedunn7759 similar boat myself i'm 6"3 and have been living in the gym half my life. 14-14 1/4 fits me perfect for length, very short for my height if you go off the basic theory. But the extra inches of muscle mass put the trigger that distance away from you

Im convinced you guys have some of the nicest shotguns in the world. We have some cool stuff in the us but you guys have the most beautiful wood and engravings .

I remember my uncle...6', 180 (muscle) whose gun was off-the-rack and sort of fitted him though I thought he was a little contorted when he shot. He really needed a properly-made stock designed for the average man in a comfortable stance. But what could I say...he was the state trap shooting champion. Personally I like stock dimensions from the early part of the last century when huge numbers of birds were often shot by excellent marksmen. I'm 6'1", 175 and prefer not to try to bend myself around a short stock with too little DAC and DAH. The other advantage is that one can then often find great, old guns at very reasonable prices and not have to figure the cost of a new stock into the equation. Our ancestors knew what they were doing. I would urge others to give this approach a fair try. You might become happy converts, too.

Would be interesting to see what the correct sight picture actually looks like, maybe you could take some pictures of a correct sight picture in relation to the rib and the position of it against a target. I had my gun fitted last year and have already had to re learn a lot as I had been shooting for over 25 years with guns that have had factory length stocks, my site picture has changed and in my opinion my shooting got worse for a while.

The crosser on that second stand absolutely sucks, one of the traps I struggle to hit the most at Risely lol

I love the vids with these two. They are so clearly soulmates despite their many obvious differences.

A gun might fit in summer, wearing a T shirt and skeet vest but come winter where several layers are worn will adjust the fit. Do you aim for something in the middle ?

Thank you for another excellent video which has given me a better understanding of gun fit! However now begs the question, to achieve minor changes to cast retro fitting an adjustable comb would seem the easiest way to go, however it does, for me at least, take away from the appearance of the gun. When grade 2/3 stocks are heat bent what are the chances of the wood returning to it's original shape?

I agree that an adjustable comb is the best purchase on a Non custom Gun. Cast when done correctly will be less likely to return, however over time it can happen. All wood is different. Some takes a hell of a lot more heat, some won’t take the heat without marking, some needs over bend and some with stay where put.

Never shot a shotgun unless it shoots where you are looking...Also never pick up another person's gun and shoot it...One gun that is a perfect fit for you is the only gun you should shoot if you want to be a winner! ...I taught skeet for years and an ill fitting gun will never allow you to be competitive!

Late to this video. But i'm surrounded by a ton of old school shooters at my club that only believe in "one way" of shooting, and that's a totally flat gun, only seeing the bead when you mount, then obviously ignoring it once you've called pull. I CANNOT shoot like this. In the states I went from a D class shooter to A class in less than 1400 registered competition targets all over my state by simply ramping my comb really high and seeing a "landing strip for the rib, and having that barrel as part of my sight picture like you explained around 12:42. We're talking 7 spacers on each post of the comb (browning CXS). Everyone tells me it's "wrong" and maybe if I want to push into that next level I should go back to the drawing board, but I like seeing that you shoot nearly identically to me. One thing I've found too is, you can't lift your head and shoot over the top of a target if your comb is set high already. Probably just reinforcing bad habits, but it's working for me I guess.

Sounds like you have advanced well. Also sounds like the old timers you shoot with are either morons or realize you are trying to reinvent the wheel. If you don't learn to adapt, you will never advance. Good luck

When I hunt huns in a t-shirt in September versus December roosters in a parka, there can be a couple inches difference due to clothing thickness, so how can the shotgun fit in hunting uplands where temperatures can vary from below freezing to the 80s?

It is good to see two individuals that get along so well. But I watched the video to learn how to properly set up a gun to fit properly. I was intertwined but came away with nothing useful, which is not normal for this channel. How about physically showing a good sight picture, showing a bad one and how to adjust a comb to the correct position. Make it useful mate!

Nothing fits me being 6ft 7 it’s a nightmare everything is too short and too low with my hand almost touching my face but you get use to a poorly fitted gun one thing I don’t like is seeing rib or having to force my head down on a stock if it’s too high the worst fitting gun i’ve shot was the one i use most before adjusting it it was shooting 3ft to the right at 50 yards !

I'm quite new as well, but as for the single shot gun I would say rabbits , rats and snakes and not much else other than hammering in fence posts.

There is a small market out there for single barrel trap guns. In the disciplines where only one shot is needed they make sense from a handling perspective. However there is a much larger percentage of singles that beer built as cheap simple tools. Allowing people The liberty of shooting/hunting/Perry control Without the price of a double.

Do shooters in the UK reload their shot shells?

If your right handed, shooting a no cast gun. Shouldn’t you’re poi be moved to the right not the left? Your sight picture would be the barrel to the right, with you looking on the left hand side. Therefore if you squeeze off a round when you “should” be on target, the shot should be to the right. Correct? But that’s not what happened in the beginning with mr longhorn

nope. Imagine a triangle with you eye being one point of the base and the center line of the gun the second base point. The end of the barrel is he apex. Your eye/ brain is going to align the apex where you want to shoot, but, the other leg of the triangle, the actual direction the barrel is pointing is going o be pointing to the left of where you believe you are pointing. Your eye is the rear sight, POI will always be in relation to where it sits.

just buy a Browning the best there is

Fitting left handed o/u is the worst. We are fighting an up hill battle.

I use a cheap semi-auto shotgun w non adjustable monte Carlo stock. My neighbor w his over under like that just doesn't want to compete with me unfortunately. - Peasant Elite
