** ABOUT ME **
Hello! My name is Jay, and I am a long-time veteran of storytelling and a semi-seasoned DM! I began playing Dungeons and Dragons roughly 5 years ago and began my first ever game as the DM. I figured things out by watching online games and fumbling my way through the rules, and never looked back! I've fallen in love with TTRPG's in general and want to share my experience and thoughts with the world and community I love so much. I currently DM two separate games regularly, and continue to learn every day.
** ABOUT THE CHANNEL **
Play Your Role is a project with the intention of helping inspire and coach players and DM’s alike to add story beats and dramatic moments into their games through basic writing concepts, interesting player character inspirations, and discussions on how to effectively roleplay in a way that helps (not hinders) everyone else's roleplay at the table!

Sorry, but if you are active with Critical Role related content on KZread, I don't think you are going to have an easy time avoiding spoilers once the dame breaks after the video for ep 91 is posted on Monday. People are not always considerate of spoilers when picking out their thumbnail and vid titles. So proceed with extreme caution, or accept being spoiled, it's an episode people will be posting and talking about.

Sam is one of the best dnd players in actual plays: he gives platform to others to rp, isnt afraid to fail forward, doesnt try to "win at dnd", always goes with whatever ruling the dm says, he listens to whats happening at the table at a certain moment and constantly makes an effort to separate what he -as the player- knows vs what his character knows.

@@hadesblackplays I’m referring to the numerous times where there’s been a clear goal and then FCG has changed the goal/ plan to be centred around themself such as when FCG cast divination to find D there was a clear plan previously established but then it suddenly changed to be centred around FCG. It’s not about helping others but inserting themself and moving the spotlight onto them. I stopped watching when they got to Ruidis cuz me and all my friends on my discord server felt the same way about what FCG has been constantly doing and it’s iritiating

@@hadesblackplays exactly right; also, campaign three is a campaign that seems to have gone off the rails, and it only had one rail; Sam in all three of the campaigns, has nominated himself as the guy who is keeping his eye on the prize, makes lists of things they have unresolved, and tries to steer the leaderless groups towards those unresolved goals. Marisha is the demigod of notetaking, while Sam is the Demigod of prioritizing. Sam is also an award-winning writer and director, and while he is the absolute best at NOT meta-gaming, he does allow his desire to tell a good story to lead him down some questionably "in-character" roads, which I applaud.

What I love about FCG is that he’s what all the “healers” in a friend group are. The ones who spend their time taking care of others, and protecting them. But forgetting to take care of themselves. He’s an empath and we so often forget to care for ourselves.

The beauty in this moment too is that FCG “learned” that as much as the others want to lean on them, they also want them to lean on back. Most of the time before that point, FCG would regularly try to play the martyr, and they’d stop them, but it was at this point they got a taste of what would happen if they didn’t stop them. Toxic selflessness is a dangerous trait because you tell yourself the thing you provide to others is forbidden from you, and it sometimes takes a mallet to the head (metaphorically) to make you realize it’s not only available, but necessary to you. What’s also interesting is that since that moment, they’ve also talked about what would happen if they “weaponized” FCG’s snap. This is reflective of when those of us who are selfless helpers go on the war path with the support of their friends behind them. I say all the time that I bottle up my dark side because of the all-consuming void that would be unleashed if it isn’t kept in check. But if my friends and family are with me and support me, I’ll let that release occur and let it be used for good.

I remember once I had my character go through full on mental breakdown that I'd been slowly developing untill he eventually barricaded himself in his room. This lead to other characters having to calm him down well he was backed into a corner thinking that his worse fears had come true. And this lead to interesting to where a bunch of people were trying to understand what was going on with this man who suddenly sprouted wings (Fallen asimar) and was clearly thinking they were going to hurt him.

I relate to this aspect of Sam’s characterizations as I have experienced them in the same way due to my own personality. I tend to be an easy going, soft spoken, odd ball kind of person. When I speak out strongly, people seem to be startled and pay closer attention. Sam’s characters are so silly and as you said comic relief , it’s startling when they get serious and angry. He has had scenes like this in both campaigns one and two. In each case, he has gotten totally serious and chastised the other players in the scene and delivered some of the most dramatic moments in each campaign. Sam is so good at comedy that his dramatic performances hit much stronger than the, highly talented, other actors who do dramatic scenes more frequently. Nice catch. I haven’t seen anyone else picking up on this aspect of Sam’s performances.

I have a bunny man cleric in pathfinder who is genuinely genocidal because of the fact he's a cleric. He carries a f*cking battleaxe thats used to amputate the limbs of people who p*ss him off (party members included) and he's constantly burning through 3 packs of needle's daily(a stand on for smokes, they are these needle things that reduce stress when you suck on them) because he suffers from heart related issues caused by stress and without them would likely have a heart attack. Why do i say all this? Take care of your healers or they'll lob yer legs off.

I think the true beauty of this moment is not just Sam (or any of the characters), but it is also Mattew Mercer and how he is running the campaign. He clearly worked with all the players to give them each not just a personality flaw, but set up a mental or emotional flaws that has it's own mechanics inside each of each of them that acted as a ticking timebomb; that is the moment and situation is right, and the stresses against them is great, each of them has mechical features that determines what happens when they lose control over their emotions and their ability to think rationally. As a Neurodivergent person who some times struggles with emotional disregulation (except not at those extremes), it Is amazing to see the concept of emotional disregulation be brought into the campaign (as having al group of emotionally unstable characters,) and using that to actually drive the drama and the narrative at the table.

I always struggle with Sam and his characters. He has some truly vulnerable moments, which I appreciate, but he has moments of real cruelty, especially in this moment. Sam seems to delight in FCG hurting the other PCs. Yes, to me, Sam seemed to love the cruelty of it all. He even planned it, taking notes on how to be the most cruel. Sam, so reminds me of some of my personal trauma. I don't find the class clowns who are bullies and hide behind humor and performative niceness when confronted. He makes watching CR a struggle for me.

Sorry you've had that experience with Sam. I think it's important to clarify that they have very clear, defined, and established boundaries alongside decades of working with each other. He's been setting up for this climactic moment that will truly push the party together, or split them apart. That "something" the campaign was lacking was cohesion and understanding, and this moment truly helps get them there. He's worked really hard for this moment and it's finally paid off! That feels good! He's allowing everyone else to have their moment, to grant an opportunity of catharsis and communication as their characters and that feels good too! It's good storytelling, and it gets uncomfortable sometimes, but I think it's really helpful to know you're allowed to feel that discomfort, some of it is intended, and not any of it is permanent or going to destroy the relationships of those at the table. It's safe, they're safe, and they're staying within the boundaries of one another, and it's okay for you to react to that however you need to. I hope you're able to say 'My situation is different now. I'm safe now. They cannot hurt me or control me and I do not need to give them any more of myself' soon. (With the they/them being substituted for what's trauma appropriate.)

i dont think sam takes pleasure in hurting the cast, i think its more of a character to character thing. In our mind, we have to realize that how FCG feels isn't always as Sam feels. We have to see that FCG as a character doesn't know why he cant fulfill his purpose even though all the cast does. And to not know why... well that really eats at a person's subconscious. We arent watching a character say everything they have been feeling this whole time, we are watching a Mental Breakdown.

Sounds like you're just projecting your personal issues on to him.
