Wheels Wednesday | Ep. 12 | Type 3 Engine

Welcome to another episode of "Wheels Wednesdays," where we talk about the many interesting vehicles that the San José Fire Department uses during firefighter operations! In episode 12, SJFD's Fire Engineer Mike Moraida shows us the Type 3 engine. With a 500 gallon tank and robust off-road capabilities, the Type 3 engine excels at fighting both structure and vegetation fires.

Freight liner is much nicer than the Cal Fire 34 using International chassis.

Thanks for your kind words! We are planning to highlight the ARFF units; however, due to some unforeseen issues, this particular video will likely be delayed by a couple months.

You do a great work, an heroic work, and I don't mean disrespect, but what can you do with 500 gallons of water??? Why carry so little???

Thank you for your question. Our Type 3 Engine is balanced between water capacity and maneuverability (i.e., for off-roading). It has to be able to traverse the hilly terrain surrounding the City of San José. Additionally, it's not meant to tackle wildfires by itself, rather it is just one piece of the puzzle. For example, when there's a large wildfire near our jurisdiction, we will often work with other agencies such a CAL FIRE who have more specialized equipment for tackling such fires.
