WHEELS VS TRACKS. Actual TEST On Honda Snowblower.

Actual testing of wheels vs tracks on honda snowblower.
Pros and Cons
Wheeled machines usually good for flat surfaces , flat driveways, decks , walkways. sometimes they ride up on hard packed snow so a weight kit on top of bucket may help.
I like mine because it is easier to use, easier to turn but not so much for berms.
I also have tracked machines as well ‪@HondaSnowblowerEnthusiasts311‬ and really like and use more often than the wheeled one. More traction , does not ride up because of the height adjustment pedal. It can climb stairs easily. I let the machine do the work especially in turns by making wider circles.
Hope this helps you decide on what to get. In a perfect world you would have both. A wheeled one for flat driveways, and decks for easy turning and a tracked one for hard packed snow, berms, and more traction.

I traded my wheeled machine years ago for the track. Love the track for clearing the walkway and deck! Thank you.

I have a couple Ariens wheeled machines and live in Kansas so we don't have nearly the snow most of you guys have, but I do live on a steep driveway and my son clears snow for people on steep driveways and we don't have issues with traction, even with ice underneath. Sure, we may slip walking behind the machines, but the machines seem to have great traction and eat the snow right up. I like wheels because there are less moving parts, less things to break, and they are cheaper.

Yes Sir!! Both have Pros and Cons, Good Demonstration ! i find track slower but they work Great , i have flat driveway, so my wheel 928 does pretty good. but the track hs622 is pleasantly effective for it size, like you said, it goes up on the deck a whole lot easier !lol!

Tracks all the way with independent control for each track for easier turning. They go through the snow better, especially hard pack snow.

Nice demo. I used to buy and sell snowblowers part time for some extra money so got to use and test many machines. I gut to use MTD tracks machines, wheeled and track Honda HS55 tracks, Honda 828's track and Honda 11/32's track. The Honda wheel and track models are both great. I ended up keeping 2 Honda tracks, and 828 and 11/32 and a few Ariens wheeled machines that are great machines also. Track and non tracks are both nice and just depends on your clearing area and type of snow you usually get so it is good you pointed out what some of the differences are. The 11/32 is great for the end of the driveway piles as the piles are heavy with water from the deicer salt the town puts on the roads. The track has an advantage here in being able to set the bucket height as the handle lifting you pointed out gets to be a hassle. At times the track is a pain to turn and adjust direction but ok given it's advantages. The wheeled machines are much easier to maneuver and turn especially when they have differential drive so the wheels independent. The cheaper MTD tracks were great in having independent track drive controlled by the dash handles so could turn easily and much better than a Honda. The track drive in the MTD's were simple but with robust parts that held up over the years.

Great explanation! It isn't obvious to someone new to snowblowers that both have their place, each with strengths and weaknesses. I have a lot of berm and packed snow to remove, and tracks are the only way for me, Having to lift on the bars to keep the bucket down takes away further the amount of traction available to the wheels whereas with tracks I actually find I can push down on the bars some and increase traction.

I saw you handle the wheel machine and noticed that you stopped the machine every time you adjusted the hydrostat. I assume it’s the same on the 624 as it is on my HS970 (European model of 928), that if you engage the auger first and then the hydrostat , you can let go of the clutch handle of the auger and adjust the hydrostat on the go. The auger will still run and will not stop until you let go of the hydrostat clutch handle.

you are right. Its just my habit I guess. I dont like to shift on the fly because dont like to put undue stress on final drive gearbox. I'm never in a hurry anymore.

I have had a HS 80 tracked for 15 years no problems works great but moving wet snow about 6 feet tops does not plug dry snow blows good 4" of snow 2ed speed too slow 3 speed too fast so it is slow works great on virgin snow with tracks good for walking trail but slow on driveways. I found a hs 928 tracked that had problems moving forward found the lower gear box trash moisture and maintance the problem looking into the problem with others having the same problem there is a problem with the lower gear box in the weakness in the drive shafts as well in breaking and the weak pins. The choice of tracks vs wheels I went for the change to wheels, I purchased a good box and gears on ebay extra parts I ordered from honda parts on ass oh no the hydro shafts are different the spline and drive gear are smaller back to ebay and found a used hydro so now I wait for parts. I have the feeling the wheel blower is faster there are less gears and the shaft speed is higher Plus the gear box should stand up better with the load on drive wheels vs tracks. If anyone ownes the HS or HSS the right side of the frame support should be taken apart and greased and moisture condition is a problem. there is no pan on the frame only 2 bars to protect the box from moisture

Surface contact of tracks plus back boggles wheels may put more stress on gears. But again they do put sheir pins on tracks. Putting a grease fixing on gear box like you recommend will be the best thing to do.

Yes tracks are harder on the gearbox and the weak pin axle shaft can wear and break it is only a 3/4 shaft more important is the moisture in the lower box that rots the gears and bearings the lower frame side case must be taken apart and checked. (Look on utube on cases of failure)
