Wheelchair Wednesday #13: Pulling up into a truck

WHEELCHAIR WEDNESDAY #13: Pulling myself into a truck
When I was in the hospital I was asked by a therapist what I used to drive. I replied "a truck... I have always driven a truck." I was told that I would probably need to consider getting a car now. It would be challenging, especially as a girl, to pull myself up into a truck. I remember being immediately filled with frustration and could feel my stubborn side initiate lol. I told my mom "We are truck people mom, we only drive trucks." I spent the time every day in therapy building the muscles I needed to get into a truck!! Once a truck girl...always a truck girl

I'm in love with the mountains in the background! When I broke my leg, I was wheelchair bound for 5 weeks and I thought I was suffering so much. I saw so many people who are permanently wheelchair bound and their smiles and their positivity made me realize how lucky I had been before that. I realized how a mindset can be everything. They’re easy to use and very safe plus someone who doesn’t need them can still drive the vehicle using the standard brake and accelerator pedals. It was rather ingenious.

It’s not really offensive but sorta rude, just from where I’m at... And Well different reasons... 1. I don’t even know what type of disabilities she has in order for me to do that. 2. I’d rather someone give me a simple answer and then I’m not waisting my time searching the internet. 3. I was curious anyways. 4. I don’t know how cars/trucks works and stuff so, especially for a physical disabled person.

@@joyloos7957 I'm a paraplegic ( paralyzed from the chest down which means that my legs don't work) and hand controls push the brake and gas pedals.

Well legs ARE connected to the body, sooooo... Further explanation, as she pulls herself up her legs will get dragged up as well. Also, paralysis isn't cut and dry. Just because someone may be a paraplegic (waist down) doesn't mean they can't move their legs at all; there are levels the same as with quadriplegic (neck down). Some paraplegics can walk and quads can move their arms, etc.
